Wurmple (Japanese: ケムッソ, HepburnKemusso) (WERM-pull[1]) is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

Wurmple evolves into either Silcoon or Cascoon depending on its personality value[citation needed] starting at level 7.

Biology

Physiology

Wurmple is a small and larval caterpillar-like Pokémon. The top part of its long body is bright scarlet red, while its segmented underbelly is cream-colored. It has ten stubby white legs. It has many spines all over its body, including a long red spine atop its head, a yellow spike on its forehead, and two yellow spines protruding from its rear. With the spikes on its tail, Wurmple takes away tree bark to get sap. It has large yellow eyes with black pupils.

Behavior

Wurmple primarily defend themselves using the two spikes on their rears. When in trouble, they can secrete poison out of these barbs and raise their hindquarters up to deter potential predators—specifically the Swellow and Starly who consider Wurmple their preferred prey.Wurmple feed on tree sap; they use their spikes to peel back bark and feed on the exposed resin that oozes out. They spend most of their time on trees. Wurmple are voracious eaters, as they need to store a good deal of energy for evolution. It is believed that a Wurmple's personality is the primary determining factor in its evolutionary path. Outgoing, cheerful Wurmple tend to evolve into Silcoon, while introverted, downcast ones seem to evolve into Cascoon.

Natural Abilities

The bottoms of their feet have tiny suction cups strong enough to allow them to inch upside-down even on glass surfaces.they can shoot a white fluid out of their mouths that turns sticky in contact with air—silk. The substance entangles and inhibits predators, giving Wurmple time to flee.

Often targeted by bird Pokémon, it desperately resists by releasing poison from its tail spikes.

  • X

It loves to eat leaves. If it is attacked by a Starly, it will defend itself with its spiked rear.

  • Y

It lives among the tall grass and in forests. It repels attacks by raising up the spikes on its rear.

  • Omega Ruby

Using the spikes on its rear end, Wurmple peels the bark off trees and feeds on the sap that oozes out. This Pokémon's feet are tipped with suction pads that allow it to cling to glass without slipping.

  • Alpha Sapphire

Wurmple is targeted by Swellow as prey. This Pokémon will try to resist by pointing the spikes on its rear at the attacking predator. It will weaken the foe by leaking poison from the spikes.

  • Legends: Arceus

Likes sap and is abundant in the wild. Why it evolves into various different forms is unknown. One cannot tell from a Wurmple's appearance which form it will take when it evolves.

Appearances

Anime

Both May and Jessie owned Wurmple that evolved into Beautifly and Dustox, respectively. Goh caught three Wurmple in PJ007: Serving Up the Flute Cup!.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, wild Wurmple can be found either holding a Bright Powder or a Pecha Berry. Wild Wurmple caught holding a Pecha Berry will evolve into Cascoon, while Wurmple caught holding a Bright Powder will evolve into Silcoon. This appears to help identify which "-coon" Wurmple might evolve into.
  • Wurmple, along with Caterpie and Weedle take the least amount of levels to evolve, with 7.
  • Wurmple is the only early-route Bug-type Pokémon with a split evolution, as well as the only Pokémon with a split evolution based on personality value.

Origin

Wurmple is based on a pipevine swallowtail caterpillar, who is red in color and covered in spines.

Etymology

Wurmple may come from "worm" and "rumple" (as its skin is rumpled and spiny).
