Wild Pokémon are Pokémon that have not yet been captured by a Trainer. This is one of the only methods of obtaining a Shiny Pokémon. The player must capture the Wild Pokémon found in routes to fill up his/her Pokédex and to advance in his/her adventure. In the first episode of the anime, the Pokédex told Ash that wild Pokémon are jealous of Pokémon trained by humans.

In some games, some wild Pokémon can only be found in a certain condition. For example, Audino can only be found in shaking bushes in the Generation V games.

Mechanic[]

The encounter with Wild Pokémon works using the random number mechanic. Each unit of the catching location, such as Tall Grass or cave floors, is assigned a certain number. If the randomly generated number is less than the assigned number, the Pokémon encounter sequence is triggered, and a Pokémon species and level that is available in that location and at that point in the game, is generated.

Locations[]

Tall Grass[]

In the earlier generations of the games, Wild Pokémon are mostly found in Tall Grass. Additionally, wild Pokémon can be found in caves, such as Mt. Moon and the Rock Tunnel in Kanto, or water bodies.

Breakable rocks[]

Starting from Generation II, there is a chance of encountering a wild Pokémon on breaking rocks while using the move Rock Smash outside of battle.

Headbutt trees[]

Starting from Generation II, there is a chance of encountering a wild Pokémon on interacting with trees while using the move Headbutt outside of battle.

Deep sand[]

Starting from Generation III, there is a chance of encountering a wild Pokémon while moving through deep sand.
