The Viridian Forest is the forest that connects Viridian City to Pewter City.
Anime and manga
In the anime, Viridian Forest is where Ash catches his first Pokémon, Caterpie that becomes a Butterfree. It's also where he battles Samurai, as shown in Challenge of the Samurai.
