Tyrogue (Japanese: バルキー, HepburnBarukii) (tie-ROAG[1]) is a Fighting-type Baby Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Tyrogue is small, bipedal, humanoid Pokémon. His skin tone is purple in color with brown trunks and shoes. His appearance is similar to that of someone wearing an old football uniform.

Behavior[]

Tyrogue are a wandering Pokémon, having no fixed shelter and constantly moving to different locations. They are very determined and energetic, spending the day searching for new foes to spar with. They will attempt to engage in combat with nearly anything that moves, but will not attack unless they believe the opponent has given consent. Tyrogue accept victory humbly, but will sometimes take losses less than graciously. If defeated, they will nurse their wounds until healed, but will then immediately search for the foe that defeated them and attempt to hold a rematch. They will continue to do so until they become strong enough to win.

Tyrogue will fight until exhaustion, even when it is clear that they will lose. They take their training very seriously, and will become stressed if they miss even a single day. As a result, trainers with Tyrogue must maintain consistent and varied training regimens to keep their Tyrogue healthy. Despite their size, they are strong fighters; opponents will often be surprised by their skill in combat.

Natural abilities[]

Tyrogue can have either Guts or Steadfast as his main abilities; the former doubles his Attack when he is Burned, Poisoned, or Paralyzed. The latter boosts his Speed by one stage each time he flinches. Tyrogue can also evolve into one of 3 different Pokémon.

Evolution[]

Tyrogue can evolve into either Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop depending on his Attack and Defense stats when he is leveled up to level 20 or higher:

  • Hitmonlee if his Attack > Defense.
  • Hitmonchan if his Attack < Defense.
  • Hitmontop if his Attack = Defense.

Trivia[]

  • Tyrogue is one of the very few Baby Pokémon that can evolve by leveling-up.
  • Tyrogue is the only Baby Pokémon with a branched evolution.
    • It is also the Baby Pokémon with the most evolutions (3).
    • Excluding Eevee, which has the most evolutions out of all Pokémon.
  • In the Beta Version of Gold & Silver, Tyrogue's beta name was Gohng. It also had a more hamster-like appearance.

Origin[]

Tyrogue appears to be based on an in-training child. Its stance in its artwork and outfit especially resembles that of sumo wrestlers in training.

Etymology[]

Tyrogue is a mix of the words tyke and rogue.

His Japanese name Balkie is a corruption of the English word bulky.
