Tornadus (Japanese: トルネロス, Hepburn: Torunerosu) (tohr-NAY-dus[1]) is a Flying-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V. It is a member of the Forces of Nature along with Thundurus, Landorus, and Enamorus.

Biology

Physiology

Tornadus is a green Pokémon with two purple horns and markings on its body. It has white hair on its head resembling a cloud, and it also has hair on its face. Its eyes are yellow and it has small pupils. It has a long, purple tail with five yellow wind-shaped structures.

In Incarnate form, it is somewhat humanoid and the hair on its face resembles a mustache. Its lower torso consists of a cloud.

In Therian form, it becomes bird-like in appearance. The hair on its face resembles a beak. The tips of its wings, as well as its talons, are purple. There is also a cloud around the base of its tail. It also has a red triangular gem on its navel.

Trivia

  • Tornadus is the only mono-type member of the Forces of Nature.
  • Its Therian Forme is the mystery silhouette in the AR searcher app picture.
  • In Pokémon Dream Radar, Tornadus appears as one of the legendary Pokémon of the game, but, unlike the rest of the Kami Trio, is encountered twice. The first time is when the player completes a research for the first time, where Tornadus appears to the player, but cannot be battled, as Tornadus flies away. The second time is when the player opens up the extension. This time, Tornadus is battleable.
  • Tornadus was the first pure flying type Pokémon and was the only one in existence until the introduction of Rookidee and Corvisquire in Generation VIII.

Origin

Tornadus is based on Fūjin, a God of wind in Japan. It, alongside the other Forces of Nature, resembles a genie, or possibly Aeolus, a God and personification of the wind in Greek Mythology.

Its Therian Forme is based on the Vermilion Bird from the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology.

Etymology

Tornadus and its Japanese name, Torunerosu, come from tornado and Aeolus, a Greek wind god.
