Swadloon (Japanese: クルマユ, HepburnKurumayu) (swahd-LOON[1]) is a Bug/Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Swadloon is a mainly round Pokémon that resembles a pupating caterpillar wrapped in leaves. Its body is yellow, and it is wrapped in a cloak of green leaves. On the top of its head is a "V" shaped green leaf-like appendage. Its frowning expression gives it a gloomy, sorrowful, shy look.

Behavior[]

On its back are the veins of the leaf as well as a bit at the bottom tip of the cloak resembling a rounded tail. Swadloon lives on the forest floor and converts fallen leaves into nourishment, which helps the surrounding plant life grow.

Evolution[]

Swadloon is the evolved form of Sewaddle as of level 20. Swadloon then evolves into Leavanny with high friendship.

Trivia[]

  • While it seems to be similar to Metapod, Kakuna, Cascoon, or Silcoon in nature, it doesn't evolve from its previous form as fast, nor does it evolve into its final form in the same method.
  • Swadloon ranked 6th, among all Pokémon, in the Pokémon of the Year 2021 poll by The Pokémon Company. It also ranked 3rd among all Unova Pokémon.

Origin[]

Swadloon is likely based on a caterpillar inside a chrysalis. It may be based on a leaf rolling caterpillar or silver-spotted skipper, both of which cover themselves with leaves as shelter. Its appearance and usage on leaves like a blanket to hide itself could also be based on a hikikomori, which is a shut-in or person suffering from a social anxiety disorder in Japanese culture.

Etymology[]

Swadloon comes from swaddle and cocoon.
