Starter Pokemon, or Starters are the first Pokemon that a trainer gets to keep.
In each generation of Pokémon games, a set of starter Pokémon are available for new trainers to choose from, usually in sets of three; the types that make up these sets are Fire, Grass, and Water. Pokémon Yellow is the sole exception to date, with Pikachu as the only starter.
Ash caught and evolved all Fire type starters except Torchic.
All the starter Pokémon have a common color on their bodies. Fire starters have red, Water starters have blue, and Grass starters have green.
Bulbasaur is the only 1st stage of a starter to have 2 types.
Ash has captured all three starters from Kanto and Johto. This trend was temporarily broken in Hoenn when he only captured Treecko, while May has Torchic and Brock has Mudkip. In Sinnoh Ash captured Turtwig and caught Chimchar after Paul released it, while Dawn started with Piplup. In Unova, Ash's starter catching trend has returned seeing as how in the first recent episodes he has captured the new starters, Oshawott in 003, Tepig in 004 and Snivy in 007.
Ash has captured all known Starter Pokemon, with the exceptions of Eevee, Torchic, Mudkip and Piplup.
Oshawott is the only unova starter that does not have 5 letters in its name.
