Snivy (Japanese: ツタージャ Tsutarja) is the Grass-type Starter Pokémon of the Unova region, introduced in Generation V. Snivy's classification is the Grass Snake Pokémon. Like all of the previous grass starters, Snivy has the ability Overgrow. It is #001 in the Unova Pokédex and its evolutions are #002 (Servine) and #003 (Serperior) like other grass Starter Pokémon. Snivy is very prideful.

Snivy is a serpentine creature with a mainly green body, tan stomach and lower head, with the end of its tail being shaped like a leaf as large as its head. Though unlike most other snake-like creatures, Snivy sports arms and legs, being green and tan, respectively. The arms are quite plant-like, ending in three prongs that act like fingers. Its head is a tear drop shape with the top half being green and the bottom half, in front of the neck, being tan. Its eyes are in the intersection between the border of the green and tan parts of its head. Its eyes are surrounded by a yellow marking and are usually half closed. Near the bottom of its neck is a yellow collar which comes up on either side on its body, and comes together in the center of its back, making a line to the bottom of the leaf tail.

Behavior
  +
A calm and intelligent Pokémon, Snivy moves swifly in battle. They'll start to move swifter if they bathe in sunlight for long enough. A Snivy will show it's in bad health when its tail starts drooping.

The first Snivy seen was when Professor Juniper, introduced the starter Pokémon of Unova. When Trip arrived to pick his starter he chose Snivy, because of its confidence.

  +
Snivy will always keep their heads held up high. They are known to refuse orders they consider “unbecoming” or “unworthy;” in fact, Snivy may even persuade other Pokémon to complete tasks they do not want to finish for them. Despite their haughty personalities, however, Snivy are also very calm and intelligent. Though they dislike combat, they will stay collected when attacked and always think before acting. Though their arms are usable, Snivy are more adept at using vines to handle objects.
Ash's Snivy
  +
According to Iris and Cilan in "Snivy Plays Hard to Catch!", due to their high intelligence, Snivy have high expectations of their trainers. If a trainer fails to meet them, then Snivy will leave them. Despite their smugness, their calm natures and intelligence make Snivy popular amongst trainers in Unova.
Trip's Snivy
Trip's Serperior

  +
Snivy usually live on treetops and tall grasses in many forests.
It battled Ash and Pikachu when they first came to Unova and won. It was later revealed that it evolved and is male proven by Ash's Snivy using attract.

In Japanese, Snivy says taaja and is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara.

*Snivy is also a playable character in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond; she's also a Princess and daughter of Queen Serperior.
* Snivy's Japanese name is possibly derived from ツタ tsuta, Japanese ivy, and 蛇 jaa, snake.

**Snivy can be seen female in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond and under the possession of Ash, however, it actually only has a 12.5% chance of being female.

Origin
* Snivy is also the only Grass Starter Pokémon that has the same beginning letter in its evolutions.

  +
Snivy is based on the green vine snake and possibly the expression "snake in the grass" (someone untrustworthy). Snivy and its evolution having legs may be based on the theory that snakes evolved from lizards, which had legs. As the Unova starters are based on historical empires, Snivy and its evolutions are likely based on the French (and possibly British) Empire.

  +
Etymology
  +
Snivy is a portmanteau of snake, ivy, and possibly snide (sarcastic and harsh).
  +
  +
Tsutāja likely comes from 蔦 (tsuta, vine or ivy) and 蛇 (ja, snake).

Snivy is a serpentine creature with mainly a green body, tan stomach and lower head, with the end of its tail being shaped like a leaf as large as its head.

Behavior

A calm and intelligent Pokémon, Snivy moves swifly in battle. They'll start to move swifter if they bathe in sunlight for long enough. A Snivy will show it's in bad health when its tail starts drooping.

Snivy usually live on treetops and tall grasses in many forests.

Evolution

Snivy evolves into Servine at level 17. Servine then evolves into Serperior at level 36.

Trivia

  • Some large snakes, such as pythons and anacondas, have vestigial legs, which are visible on the outside of them or on old snake skeletons that carry hips, yet Snivy's legs seem to function. When Snivy is a Servine, its arms become shorter. And when it evolves into Serperior, it loses its legs completely and its arms become small and stubby.
  • Snivy is also a playable character in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond; she's also a Princess and daughter of Queen Serperior.
    • Snivy can be seen female in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond and under the possession of Ash, however, it actually only has a 12.5% chance of being female.
  • Snivy is the only non-mammalian Unova starter.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Snivy is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Razor Leaf. However, Snivy is unable to learn Razor Leaf in any form of main game.
    • When Snivy was originally revealed it didn't have it's English name so fans gave it the name "Smugleaf". This name was so popular it appeared in an issue of Nintendo Power.
  • Snivy ranked 4th, among all Pokémon, in the Pokémon of the Year 2021 poll by The Pokémon Company. It also ranked 2nd among all Unova Pokémon.

Origin

Snivy is based on the green vine snake and possibly the expression "snake in the grass" (someone untrustworthy). Snivy and its evolution having legs may be based on the theory that snakes evolved from lizards, which had legs. As the Unova starters are based on historical empires, Snivy and its evolutions are likely based on the French (and possibly British) Empire.

Etymology

Snivy is a portmanteau of snake, ivy, and possibly snide (sarcastic and harsh).

Tsutāja likely comes from 蔦 (tsuta, vine or ivy) and 蛇 (ja, snake).

Names in other languages

  • English, Italian and Spanish: Snivy
  • French: Vipélierre
  • German: Serpifeu
  • Chinese: 藤藤蛇
  • Korean: 주리비얀
