Shelmet (Japanese: チョボマキ, HepburnChobomaki) (SHELL-mett[1]) is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Shelmet is a snail-like pink and green shelled Pokémon. It has a long pink proboscis sticking out that looks very much like lips, and it has large eyes with small black pupils. Its grayish shell serves as its armor, which resembles a knight's helmet.

Behavior[]

Shelmet live in wetlands and fens; Karrablast are almost always found in the same habitats as Shelmet. Karrablast are the main “predators” of Shelmet, if one could call them that.Shelmet tend to be very cautious and aversive towards novel stimuli, however, so they will often attempt to flee from Karrablast despite needing them for evolution. To deter attackers, Shelmet can spit a sticky, poisonous substance that adheres to and irritates skin upon contact. They will then close their shells to protect their vulnerable bodies from damage. These Pokémon can sometimes be found buried beneath the mud to avoid aggressors.

Evolution[]

Shelmet evolves into Accelgor when traded with Karrablast.

Pokédex Entries[]

  • Black

When attacked, it defends itself by closing the lid of its shell. It can spit a sticky, poisonous liquid.

  • White

It evolves when bathed in an electric-like energy along with Karrablast. The reason is still unknown.

  • Black 2

When it and Karrablast are together, and both receive electrical stimulation, they both evolve.

  • White 2

When it and Karrablast are together, and both receive electrical stimulation, they both evolve.

  • X

When it and Karrablast are together, and both receive electrical stimulation, they both evolve.

  • Y

It evolves when bathed in an electric-like energy along with Karrablast. The reason is still unknown.

  • Omega Ruby

  • Alpha Sapphire

It evolves when bathed in an electric-like energy along with Karrablast. The reason is still unknown.

  • Sword

When attacked, it tightly shuts the lid of its shell. This reaction fails to protect it from Karrablast, however, because they can still get into the shell.

  • Shield

It has a strange physiology that responds to electricity. When together with Karrablast, Shelmet evolves for some reason.

Trivia[]

  • Shelmet and Karrablast only evolve when traded for each other. They are the first and currently only Pokémon to do this.
  • Despite having the metal "shell", it is not Steel-type.
  • It is shown, when traded with a Karrablast, it takes Shelmet's helmet, deshelling it and causing it to evolve into Accelgor, the Shell-Out Pokémon. Karrablast then evolves into Escavalier and wears Shelmet's armor.
  • During Generation V's development, a family of snails were planned to be Karrablast's rival instead of Shelmet. But after having some discussions and believing that Shelmet would provide a good armor for Karrablast, this original snail based Pokémon had no longer been considered by developers and Shelmet had replaced it as Karrablast's rival.

Origin[]

Shelmet is based on a nautilus or snail. Its long proboscis may make it based on a geoduck. Its shell also resemble a knight's helmet with its visor open.

Etymology[]

Shelmet comes from shell and helmet.
