Serperior (Japanese: ジャローダ, HepburnJarooda) (sur-PEER-ee-ur[1]) is the Grass-type First partner Pokémon of the Unova region, introduced in Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Serperior is a very large reptilian snake-like Pokémon. It has a white neck and face with a pointy snout, with pale-green designs on the top of its head with two yellow leaf-like extensions on the back of its head. Its eyes are bright red and fierce-looking, despite its regal, stoical demeanor. It has a dark green body with a pale-green underside with two, swirly yellow designs on it. The small wing-like protrusion from its previous form is now its collar being curled and leaf-like, being green on the exterior and yellow in the interior. It has two small leaf-like hands, which it barely uses and normally leaves behind its back. It now completely lacks any legs and now must slither about due to its new, serpentine form, despite having the "tiny leaves" as arms (perhaps as a vestigal leftover of previous forms). Its red eyes are also relatively small in comparison with Snivy's. Its long, green tail has three small green leaves sprouting from it.

Special Abilities[]

Serperior can severely intimidate and completely stop an opponent's movements simply by glaring at them. Like its pre-evolutions, it uses photosynthesis to boost its energy.

Behavior[]

Serperior is a very regal, self-confident Pokémon that is not easily intimidated. It will only use all of its strength if its opponent is not fazed by its fierce and noble glare. When confronted with opponents that prove to be their equals, however, they will let their true power show. Their glares are said to freeze weaker foes dead in their tracks. Even with their haughtiness, the great agility and cleverness of Serperior have made them mainstays in the teams of many Unova trainers.

Habitat[]

Serperior are very rare in the wild, but live in densely forested areas.

Evolution[]

Serperior evolves from Servine at level 36. It is the final evolved form of Snivy.

Other[]

A female Serperior appears as the keeper of the Arbor Area in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, where she is a Queen and has a daughter, Princess Snivy.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike other snake-based Pokémon such as Arbok and Seviper, Serperior is not even part Poison-type. This may because the former two are based on venomous snakes (cobras and vipers), whereas Serperior resembles a python or boa, which are non venomous.
    • However, Serperior is capable of learning a few Poison-type moves such as Gastro Acid, Coil, and Toxic.
  • Despite being the final stage in a 3-Pokémon evolutionary chain and having a base stat total of 528, Serperior still has the same Special Attack stat as an Oddish (and the same Attack stat as a Bellsprout).
  • Serperior is the second longest Pokémon in Generation V, shorter than both Black Kyurem and losing to White Kyurem by about 2 feet altogether, (Black= 11 feet, white= 12 feet).
    • However, its height may be measured through length of its body rather than stature.
  • Serperior is the longest final Starter evolution, with a length of 10 feet and 10 inches.
  • Serperior is the only Generation V First partner Pokémon that is based on a reptile (snake), while Emboar and Samurott are based on mammals (wild boar and sea otter respectively).

Origin[]

Like its pre-evolutions, Serperior is based on the green vine snake and possibly the expression "snake in the grass" (someone untrustworthy). It may also incorporate features of European royalty as well as emperors of ancient China and Japan. The fact that it loses its legs upon evolving is based on the scientific theory that snakes are descended from aquatic lizards who lost their legs. Its ability to freeze its opponents with a gaze is similar to the Basilisk, a mythological 'king of serpents' who could kill or petrify anyone who looked it in the eye. Its great size and power may be based on a green anaconda or possibly the giant prehistoric snake Titanoboa, due to being a large tropical nonvenomous constrictor. As the starters of Generation V are based on empires, and also according to Ken Sugimori, Serperior is based on the French royalty, with Lady Oscar from The Rose of Versailles serving as inspiration.

Etymology[]

Serperior comes from serpent and superior. It may also incorporate emperor.

Jarōda comes from 蛇 (ja, snake) and lord.
