Probopass (Japanese: ダイノーズ, HepburnDainoozu) (PRO-bow-pass[1]) is a Rock/Steel-Type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Probopass is based upon rock having big nose and mustache. Its nose is red and it lacks hands. Instead of them it has bird's peck there. Its body color is grayish blue.

Behavior[]

Probopass' entire body exudes a strong magnetic energy that causes nearby electronic devices to remain inactive. It is able to magnetically control its small bird-shaped formations (dubbed as "mini-noses") in order to track down its prey, as well as attacking opponents from all three sides.Probopass consume metallic objects, pulling them close with magnetic force. They can form balls of iron in this manner to hurl at foes.Probopass can also use these units to pester attackers and drive them away; since they can control each of their Mini-Noses individually, they can harass foes from three directions at once (four, if one includes the Probopass themselves) to make up for their own sluggishness. These units do almost all of the work for their main bodies, which primarily issue commands and do little else. However, they can get lost if they stray too far away, forcing Probopass to search (or send its remaining Mini-Noses to search) for them.

Evolution[]

Probopass evolves from Nosepass when leveled up inside of Mt. Coronet or Chargestone Cave.

Sprites[]

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Probopass's debut in the anime was in the sixth Episode of Pokémon: DP Battle Dimension, Nosing 'Round The Mountain!, where it can be seen evolving from Nosepass at Mt. Coronet while battling Ash's Turtwig under the ownership of Alan.

Trivia[]

  • Probopass's sprites for Pokémon X & Y don't have third noses on the back of them, unlike all previous sprites.

Origin[]

Probopass is based on a magnetic compass and a Moai (humanoid stone statues from Easter Island with large heads, some of which have red stone "hats" called pukao), with its "mustache" being made of iron filings. Some fans have noted that Probopass somewhat resembles Mario, as both have red hats, big noses, and mustaches.

Etymology[]

Probopass is a portmanteau of proboscis (a large nose or nose-like structure) and compass. Due to its steel type and somewhat mechanical nature, it may also incorporate the word robot or the prefix robo-.

Dainōzu comes from 大 (the kanji for "big," which can be read as dai) and nose.

Names in other languages[]

  • French: Tarinorme from the French words tarin(nose) and énorme(huge).
  • Spanish: Probopass. Same as the English name.
  • German: Voluminas from the German words voluminös (voluminous) and Nase (nose).
