Pokémon Trainer is the term commonly used for a person who catches, occasionally names, and trains several different kinds and types of Pokémon.

Pokémon Trainers generally start their journey at the age of 10 when they get their first Pokémon but can start later, in Unova the playable character is around sixteen not ten. The starter Pokémon that Pokémon Trainers receive depends on what town they live in and which region they live in.

Most Pokémon trainers have a common goal: to be the ultimate Pokémon trainer, which is only obtainable by defeating the Elite Four and becoming the Pokémon Champion.

There are almost as many Pokémon trainers as there are Pokémon. Each one uses different Pokémon, a different fighting style, and a different attitude. There are usually different levels of Pokémon Trainers in terms of difficulty, Ace Trainers often being the strongest. Red is the strongest trainer in Pokémon Gold and Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver. His Pikachu is level 81 in Generation II and 88 in Generation IV, making Red the toughest trainer to beat, it is unlikely that the player could beat him unless all of their party Pokémon were at least in their mid eighties in levels.

There are usually Pokémon Trainers almost anywhere that isn't deserted. Pokémon Trainers usually reside and battle on routes in order to weaken the protagonist/player and slow them down. Pokémon Trainers are almost always found in towns, routes, buildings, and the ever so infamous Victory Road. They also inhabit Gyms.

Few, however, succeed in this aim, but Ash Ketchum, the male protagonist of the anime and movies, never gives up. He travels the Pokémon world in a mission to catch every single different Pokémon and add it to his/her Pokédex. By his side is always his trusty electric mouse Pokémon, Pikachu.

  • Even though Ash (the main anime character) states that one has to be at least ten years old to have a trainer's license, Unova allows preschool age children to train Pokémon however as Unova is a fair distance away from the other known regions it could be that as Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are close to each other they have a joint system of only allowing those who are ten or over to train Pokémon and Unova could have a different system that allows preschoolers to train Pokémon.
  • In remakes,Players receive redesign.
  • Pokémon X and Y allow the player to customize their clothes.
