Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (Japanese: ポケモン不思議(ふしぎ)のダンジョン 空(そら)の探検隊(たんけんたい), Hepburn: Pokémon Fushigi no Danjon Sora no Tankentai) is the fifth installment in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series for the Nintendo DS, and a sister game to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. There are five new starters: Phanpy, Shinx, Riolu, Vulpix, and Eevee, who returns from the first game. It is an improved version of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, as it is more difficult, interesting, includes more dungeons and items and it has a longer storyline.

One major addition to the game is the introduction of special episodes, which are stories where you play as the other characters, such as Bidoof or Sunflora before the hero, the player character, came to the guild.

It was released in Japan on April 18, 2009; North America on October 12, 2009; Australia on November 12, 2009, and Europe on November 20, 2009.

Story

Main article: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Explorers of Darkness § Story

The story of Explorers of Sky is largely identical to that of Explorers of Time and Darkness, but with a few differences.

Chapter 6: Team Skull

After meeting Skuntank, the player character and their partner will get to the crossroads, and the two find a Wynaut and Wobbuffet who reveal that Spinda's Café has opened up. The two enter the Café and meet the owner, Spinda, who reveals the café is for explorers. Spinda shows them the juice bar, where ingredients found in mystery dungeon can be used to make drinks, and the Recycle Shop. where leftover items can be recycled for prizes. After the two leave the café, they meet with Chimecho who tells them that extra Pokémon on their team will wait in the café and his services can be used at the crossroads at a signpost with a bell.

Post Chapter: Shaymin Village

After graduating from the guild, the Player and Partner discover Mr. Mime and Octillery hanging in front of Spinda's Cafe. They reveal there that happy news for explorers will be announced inside the Cafe and everyone goes inside. Spinda begins his announcement and asks if anyone has heard of Sky Peak. Mr. Mime explains Sky Peak is a large mountain in the east, that is said to be so tall, it almost reaches beyond the sky. Its surrounded by a mountain range that was impassible, preventing it from being explored. Spinda confirms Mr. Mime is right and reveals that through Project P, the path to Sky Peak has been completed. Furthermore, a small village was discovered as the base of the mountain. The inhabitants are Shaymin, rare Pokémon that little is known about. Finally, a mountain path the summit of Sky Peak was recently discovered and it may lead to hidden treasure said to exist on the mountain.

Spinda marks the location of Shaymin Village on the Wonder Map and the Partner is excited to search for treasure and meet the Shaymin. When the two arrive at the village, they meet one of the local Shaymin. The Shaymin explains they are guides that take travelers up the mountain, but they have been unable to do that for a long time since the pathway to the mountain was destroyed by an earthquake and explorers stopped coming. The Partner asks Shaymin about the incredible treasure hidden on the mountain, but the Shaymin explains that explorers must see the treasure for themselves. The Shaymin offers to guide the two up the mountain and waits at the mountain path entrance.

The three make their way through the mountain's areas, which are divided among nine rest stops and the summit. When they reach the 2nd rest stop, they meet with the team assigned to survey the mountain, Team Frontier, who've built a base at the area along with a Drifblim Gondola that can take Pokémon back and forth from the rest area and Shaymin Village.

When the three reach the 4th rest stop, they see Team Frontier has set up a second base. Suddenly, Octillery comes rushing back from the next area in a panic. Octillery explains an explorer call Sneasel is getting picked on at the 5th station and asks for help. Team Frontier heads out to help and Shaymin remembers something about the 5th station and tells the Player and Partner they need to follow.

When the two teams reach the 5th station clearing, the find Sneasel surrounded by five Carnevine. Shaymin tries to keep the two sides from fighting, but battle breaks out anyway and Sneasel escapes further up the mountain. After briefly battling, Shaymin interrupts the fight and chastises the Carnivine for interfering with explorers when they promised not to. The Carnivine reveal Sneasel started the fight when he stole some treasure they found and leave after learning the fight was just a misunderstanding. Shaymin explains the Carnivine have marked the area as their territory, but can be a little rough despite being kind in nature. Team Frontier apologizes for rushing into the fight without thinking and Shaymin tells everyone to put it behind them and get back to climbing the mountain.

After reaching the 6th station clearing, Team Frontier is revealed to have built another base, but reveal they can't build anymore because the rest of the mountain is covered in snow. When the three reach the 7th station clearing, the discover Team Frontier tending to an injured Sneasel who got knocked out. Shaymin reveals there is a rescue expert in the 8th station clearing where Sneasel can be treated. The three reach the 8th station clearing where the find it's caretaker, Ampharos, who goes back to the 7th station clearing to retrieve Sneasel. Sneasel is treated for his injury, but has remain behind to recover fully and Ampharos encourages the others to keep climbing to the summit.

When the three finally reach the summit, they discover it's covered in smog and grime from being unattended to for so long. Team Frontier arrives soon after and both teams are surrounded by a group of Grimer and Muk who attack. After the two teams defeat Grimer and Muk, Shaymin explains that they are not currently at their home and that the summit got into derepair because it was left alone for a long time. The Grimer and Muk mistook the summit in its poor condition for their home and they leave to return to their real home as soon as they learn they at the summit. Shaymin then reveals to the two teams his kind of the power to clear pollution and he uses that power to clean the summit instantly. When the summit is restored to its natural state, everyone is in awe at the beauty. Then, everyone discovers the amazing view from the top of the mountain and Team Frontier realize it is the treasure of Sky Peak that surpasses all others. Team Frontier give their thanks to Shaymin for guiding everyone to the summit and Shaymin admits he had fun as well during the adventure. Shaymin tells everyone they should return to the bottom soon and everyone becomes nervous at the thought of having to go back the way they came. However, Shaymin offers to take everyone back to the mountain base and reveals the Gracidea flower that grows on the mountain causes them to transform. Shaymin turns into his Sky Forme and offers to fly everyone down. Everyone returns to Shaymin Village in success and that night a huge party is thrown at Spinda's Café to celebrate.

Special Episodes

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, the game introduces special episodes which are unlocked after completing a certain chapter of the main story. Special episodes allow the Player to play an adventure focused on supporting characters, such as Bidoof or Lopunny of Team Charm. While playing an episode, the Player is allowed to access the storage of the main story and all items and money found in the Special Episodes are directly submitted to Kangaskhan Storage and Duskull Bank respectively. The current save state is not affected during playthrough of these episodes.

Gameplay

As with its predecessors, the game follows the story of a human who is mysteriously transformed into a playable Pokémon. Along with the starters from the previous game, five more are included as playable choices; Phanpy, Riolu, Shinx, Eevee, and Vulpix. Many new gameplay features were incorporated into the game. There were extra dungeons added, the titular event Pokémon Shaymin featured on the box was added, and alternate forms (except for Rotom) were included.

Explorers of Sky expands on the plot of Explorers of Time and Darkness, as well as exploring the background of several characters. New cutscenes were added and some were changed. Five new Special Episodes are unlocked at certain points in the game which add to the overall game (such as Wigglytuff's inspiration to become an explorer, the induction of Bidoof into the guild, the formation of Team Charm, a special mission for guild member Sunflora, and the investigation of Grovyle and Dusknoir who are forced to team up).

Changes from Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness

• The Sky Jukebox, which you unlock after going through the Shaymin Village part of the post game, allows the Player to access songs from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky's soundtrack.
• Spinda's Café is introduced, which is a new shop located at the Crossroads. The shop includes Spinda's Juicebar, where various food items can be turned into drinks, the Recycle Shop, where wanted items can be exchanged for new items and prize tickets, and Project P, which makes it easier to explore new dungeons and discover treasures.
• The Secret Bazaar is also introduced. The Player can randomly find staircases in dungeons that lead to this mini shop. Here Pokémon can be healed, the belly can be restored your, sticky items can be clean, there is an optional exit to escape the dungeon, and a shop where grabs bags that hold items can be bought.
• Job offers become available from bottles the appear on the beach.
• New playable Pokémon appear.
• Shaymin Village is added to the post game.
• Only half the money the Player has is lost when they are defeated, instead of all of it, and the option to send your team members back to the guild when new members are recruited in the middle of a dungeon to replace them.
• New dungeons, such as Destiny Tower, are introduced.
• Look-a-like items such as the "Reviser Seed" and "Oren Berry" are possible to find in dungeons.
• Palkia no longer needs to be recruited to allow the Player and Partner to evolve as in Explorers of Time and Darkness, instead the two must be reunited with Manaphy.
