Despite being from Twinleaf Town, Barry had not met Dawn before, he only seemed to know Kenny. Barry is a Pokémon Trainer and is following the Gym Challenges within Sinnoh. His training style seems to be a less harsh version of Paul's, of whom Barry is a fan. Due to this, Ash has a problem with Barry's training styles. However, unlike Paul, Barry is a very sociable person and is eager to make friends, and is very caring about his Pokémon. Barry's dad is the Tower Tycoon Palmer]; one of the Sinnoh Frontier Brains and is in control of Sinnoh's Battle Tower. His best friend is Kenny. Barry also likes to fine people a lot, when something bad happens. Also, he has been shown losing to Paul in the Sinnoh League, but quickly came over it.
Barry is constantly trying to outdo Ash, as he thinks he can because his idol Paul is able to. This annoys Ash sometimes. Barry, however, loves his Pokémon and trains them as best as he can. He has a competitive spirit and is eager to challenge anyone.
Barry likes to teach his Pokémon strong and powerful offensive moves. His Skarmory is the only Pokémon shown to use a defensive move, like Spikes.
Empoleon is the main powerhouse of Barry's team. Barry has used Empoleon in a variety of matches. Empoleon is the Pokémon of Barry which is seen the most and is the most relied upon Pokémon and it could be Barry's first Pokémon.
Roserade is the final of Barry's Pokémon that were seen in his debut. Roserade is a very strong Pokémon and with its powerful attacks like Poison Jab, it managed to overcome type disadvantage and defeated Ash's Chimchar. However, it was eventually taken down by Ash's Gliscor.
Heracross is the fourth of Barry's Pokémon that was shown in the animé. Shown on Iron Island, Barry used Heracross to help defend against his Empoleon when Empoleon fell to the mysterious control of Team Galactic over all Steel Pokémon. Heracross is a very powerful Pokémon with good physical strength and is a powerhouse in Barry's team.
Barry utilized Skarmory during his third round Sinnoh League match against Paul. Skarmory wasn't in battle for long and used its Spikes move to create an entry hazard to damage the opponents when they are sent out. However, it has poor defense and fell quickly to Paul's Magmortar.
Barry utilized Hitmonlee during his third round Sinnoh League match against Paul. Sending it against Ursaring, it managed to do many quick and powerful attacks such as Mega Kick, Close Combat, Hi Jump Kick and Blaze Kick. However, its Blaze Kick activated Ursaring's Guts ability which caused it to fall in battle.
