Palossand (Japanese: シロデスナ, HepburnShirodesuna) is a ghost/ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Palossand is a Pokémon based off of a sandcastle. It has blue and pink seashells adorning areas like above its mouth and around the main tower. Just like Sandygast, it has a shovel sticking out on its head.

Behavior[]

Palossand is known as the Beach Nightmare. One is able manipulate the surrounding sand to drag in victims in order to drain their life essence. Palossand makes their homes on sandy beaches. However, they have a dislike for water and cannot maintain their sandy structures during rainy weather. The millions of sand that make up a Palossand's body have their own will. After evolving, a Palossand is able to use its ghostly abilities at a much stronger level. The bones of Palossand's victims are buried deep underneath it. It is theorized that the shovel on top of Palossand's head functions similar to radar; the shovel rotates whenever Palossand is hunting prey.

It is shown in the anime that a Palossand is able to grow larger the more it consumes its victims' life force, eventually reaching to the size of a large building.

Natural abilities[]

Palossand can absorb water as part of its water resistance. They can also trap their victims by creating inescapable sandy vortexes. From the hollows of their arms, they can fire the dried-up bones of their deceased victims who have been drained of their vitality.

Pokédex entries[]

  • Sun

Possessed people controlled by this Pokémon transformed its sand mound into a castle. As it evolved, its power to curse grew ever stronger.

  • Moon

Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained.

  • Ultra Sun

Each of its grains of sand has its own will. Palossand eats small Pokémon and siphons away their vital essence while they’re still alive.

  • Ultra Moon

Once it has whipped up a sandstorm to halt its opponents in their tracks, this terrifying Pokémon snatches away their vitality.

  • Sword

Palossand is known as the Beach Nightmare. It pulls its prey down into the sand by controlling the sand itself, and then it sucks out their souls.

  • Shield

This Pokémon lives on beaches, but it hates water. Palossand can't maintain its castle-like shape if it gets drenched by a heavy rain.

Trivia[]

  • Palossand's shape is classified as serpentine (looking like a snake or worm) despite looking like neither. This may indicate that the visible sand castle-like structure might be only part of the Pokémon or an entirely separate structure that the Pokémon controls in order to fight, capture food, and otherwise interact with its environment.
  • Palossand and its pre-evolution share their typing with Golett and Golurk.

Origin[]

Palossand is based on a sand castle. Concerning its ghostly aspects, it may also be based on the concepts of graves and monuments for the dead or haunted castles. Its shiny coloring is a reference to the black sand beaches that are found in Hawaii.

Etymology[]

Palossand is likely a combination of palace, colossal, and sand. It may also refer to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a coastal area in California. It may also be a pun on pile of sand.

Its Japanese name, Shirodesuna, comes from 城ですな (shiro desu na, "that's a castle, huh?"), 城 (shiro, castle), 死 (shi, death), death, and 砂 (suna, sand).
