While riding on Lapras, Ash and co. are nearly run over by a boy named Tad. When they get on the boat, Tad explains he wants to get into the Orange League too and he would like to battle Ash to see the power he used to beat Rudy. They head to Cleopatra Island to have their battle. Tad sends out his Poliwrath and Ash sends out Pikachu. However, though it had a type advantage, Pikachu lost to Poliwrath. Ash then sends out Charizard however it still doesn't obey Ash. When Poliwrath accidentally hits Charizard's tail flame with a Water Gun, Tad ends the battle by having Poliwrath use Ice Beam. Tad said he would have a rematch when Ash learns how to control Charizard. Nearly frozen and with it's tail flame nearly out, can Ash help Charizard recover from this tragedy? More importantly, will Charizard finally obey Ash like it used to when it was a Charmander?
This episode uses clips from past episodes to form a montage of Charizard when it was Charmander and then evolved to Charmeleon and again into Charizard.
This episode is somewhat of turning point for Ash and Charizard. After this episode Charizard became obedient like when it was a Charmander and also won many important battles for Ash later, also Ash admits that he wasn't great trainer and somewhere after this episode he became more mature trainer
"I'll be glad to have a rematch with you Ash, when you finally learn how to tame that thing."
Tad about Ash and his Charizard.
"We've been together ever since you were Charmander and then when you evolved into Charmeleon. I just want to be a good enough trainer for you."
