Episode Plot

Aboard Lapras, the group follows a news crew to an uninhabited island, where a scientific expedition is underway after the discovery of a fossilized Kabuto. A series of natural disasters place our heroes in mortal danger, with only the power of their Pokémon to help them. What is the secret of the Kabuto, and who wants that secret to remain hidden?

Trivia

  • This is the first time we see Nurse Joy in a different outfit other than her nurses uniform.
  • Despite having already encountered Kabutos in Kanto, neither Ash or Misty ever mentions this. They even react with shock at the idea of fossilized Kabutos.
  • Dexter refers to Kabuto as being "believed to be extinct", despite being present when Ash previously encountered living Kabutos.
  • Apparently Professor Oak does not share the information collected from his trainer's Pokedexs, as everyone believed Kabuto to be still extinct. Had he done so, the entire expedition would have been pointless.
  • The "Who's that Pokémon?" in this episode is ponyta.
  • The idea of an island made of fossils isn't far fetched, no pun intended, the coral reefs take 10,000 years to form. Coral atoll, coral islands, can take up to 30 million years to form. Since Kabutos went extinct 300 million years ago it makes sense that a large island has formed from the fossils that were there.
  • It seems from previous episodes and this episode that ancient Pokémon appear to have some sort of hibernation ability on a level of stasis where their bodies don't decay or degrade in any way even for millions of years. However it appears inorder to avoid damage the ancient Pokémon hibernate in caves for protection and the fact that caves climate stay the same even for millions of years unless geological activity or humans change the cave.
