Ash, Misty and their new friend, Tracey, are on a new adventure exploring the Orange Islands as Ash sets out to qualify for the Orange League Tournament. After hearing that the Mikan Gym Leader is known as one of the toughest trainers in the Orange Crew, Ash can't wait for the challenge. He learns that Pokémon battles are run a little differently on the Orange Islands, but he can always rely on his Squirtle to pull them through!

- The "Who's that Pokémon?" in this episode is Primeape.
- This episode features the first of the four Orange Crew Gym Battles. The rules are as follows:
- Only use Water Pokémon.
- The challenge is as follows:
- A shooting contest to test accuracy of Water Gun
- A race to the buoy and back.
- Cissy was the first Gym Leader to be voiced by Tara Sands (Tara Jayne back then). The second would be Jasmine.
- Also, like Jasmine, Cissy scolded her young apprentice for pulling pranks.

Cissy: "And you'd better be quiet cause you're an even littler squirt."
- Misty: "Well?"
Tracey: "They both hit it at the exact same time."
Cissy: "It looked that way to me too, so let's call this match a draw."
