As the Gym Leader, I can't express how frustrated I am. But, as a father, it makes me both happy and a little sad. It's odd.

Norman lives in Petalburg City of the Hoenn region. He is an expert on Normal-type Pokémon, from which his name is derived. He will award the Trainers the Balance Badge when they defeat him. He is the player's character's father.

Appearance[]

Norman is a tall, lean, middle-aged man with short black hair with a single fringe at the center with three edges and dark eyes.

Ruby and Sapphire[]

Norman wears a dark red, long jacket with a black collar, blue-gray trousers and black boots.

Emerald[]

Norman's appearance remains the same as it is in Ruby and Sapphire.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire[]

Norman wears a white T-shirt that is covered by a gray and maroon jacket, with the sleeves rolled up. He also wears charcoal trousers with elasticated ankles and pair of geta - dark brown flip-flops with black straps.

Personality[]

As a stern fatherly figure, Norman takes his role of Gym Leader very seriously. He and his Pokémon are a force not to be underestimated. However, relentless as he may be, Norman is a fair and simple man who takes advantage of every attribute his team has.

Etymology[]

The name Norman comes from "normal".

His Japanese name, Senri, could originate from "center" (as the Normal-type is often considered the neutral, central type), or 千里 (senri, 1000 ri) an ancient East Asian unit of measurement that was about 1640 feet or 500 meters, often used to symbolize a long journey, possibly referring to Norman's hopes for his child. Following the plant-based naming with most Gym Leaders, it may also include 仙蓼 (senryou, the Japanese name for the sarcandra herb).

Biography[]

Games[]

Ruby and Sapphire[]

In Ruby and Sapphire, Norman is the protagonist's father. During the game, he appears on TV at the beginning of the player's adventure, and is mentioned by his good friend Professor Birch in conversation when the player first meets Birch. It is also Norman who lends Wally the Zigzagoon he uses to catch his first Pokémon, Ralts. Norman then wishes to battle the player, only that he/she must get the first four Hoenn badges first.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire[]

Norman has the same role as he had in the first Generation III games, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. His gym is renovated and Norman has a different artwork when battling Norman for the gym badge.

After defeating him in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire he states that "As the Gym Leader, I can't express how frustrated I am." He then goes on to say that "But, as a father, it makes me both happy and a little sad. It's odd."

After obtaining the Eon Ticket through Streetpass/Event, when the player character has obtained the Mega Bracelet, one can speak to Norman. He will escort the player character to Slateport Harbor where on will be escorted to Southern Island to catch either Latios (Alpha Sapphire) or Latias (Omega Ruby).

Trivia[]

  • Generation III is the first time that the player character sees their father, Norman.
  • Norman uses two Slaking and a Vigoroth in the game. Therefore, his anime counterpart also owns the same two Pokémon but also owns a Slakoth. Overall, all of Norman's Pokémon (at least in Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire) are in Slakoth's evolutionary stages.
