Biography

Ruby and Sapphire series

Noland met Articuno when he was flying his plane. Nolan, upon seeing that it had been injured, helped Articuno land safely. After that, Articuno frequently visited him.

As the heroes went to the Battle Factory, they found Articuno, followed by an airplane. Moments later, they discovered Articuno at the Battle Factory, for Noland was taking care of it. When Team Rocket attempted to steal Ash's Pokémon, Articuno was used to defeat Team Rocket: it bashed their balloon away and used Ice Beam to blast them off. Ash was pleased by its power and chose Articuno to battle against in the Battle Factory, so he Liza in the Characific Valley and asked her to send over his Charizard just for that battle.[1] The next day, Charizard faced Articuno. As the rooftop was opened to give the two Pokémon an aerial battle, Team Rocket attempted to steal Articuno. However, the latter used Ice Beam to freeze them, while Charizard melted the ice with Flamethrower before Pikachu's Thundebolt blasted them off.

As the battle started, Charizard used Flamethrower, dodging Articuno's Ice Beam and hitting it. Articuno evaded Charizard's next Flamethrower and used Mist to reduce its sight of vision. As Articuno flew around, Charizard attempted to fire a Dragon Breath, which slightly hit Articuno. The latter quickly regained its balance, using Ice Beam to hit Charizard, who shook the attack off. As Charizard used Flamethrower, Articuno evaded the attack and hit Charizard with Steel Wing, causing it to fall down. Charizard was attempting to recover, until Articuno fired the super effective Water Pulse. Charizard flew off, but got struck by Ice Beam: its wing became frozen, impending his ability to fly. Articuno fired another Water Pulse to hit Charizard.

As Charizard flew off, Articuno began to use a Water Pulse and Ice Beam combo, creating shards of ice and hitting Charizard with it, who failed to melt the ice with Flamethrower. Articuno flew above Charizard, giving the latter an opportunity to strike it with Overheat. The attack melted the ice on Charizard's wing off, whereas Articuno fired Water Pulse to counter the move. It then flew, using Steel Wing to attack Charizard. As Articuno repeated its Steel Wing, Charizard grabbed Articuno and then smashed it into the ground with a devastating Seismic Toss. Articuno managed to stand up, but then it collapsed. After its defeat, Noland comforted Articuno by saying that there was no shame in losing to a Pokémon as powerful as Ash's Charizard. Articuno then flew away as Noland bid it farewell.[2]

When Ash regrouped his Kanto Pokémon before his final challenge against Brandon, he remembered Ash's Charizard battling Noland and Articuno.[3]

Diamond and Pearl series

Articuno appeared in a flashback with its Trainer when Ash recalled his journey to earn every symbol from the Battle Frontier.[4]
