− | Ninetales is a fox-like Pokémon that possesses nine tails, hence its name. Resembling the nine-tailed kitsune fox of Japanese folklore, they are mainly covered in a light, yellowish-cream-colored fur, while the tips of their nine tails are orange. On top of their head is a large tuft of hair, similar to its pre-evolved form though much more unruly and spiky. It has sinister red eyes which give it the ability to psychically control the minds of people and Pokémon. Its ears are pointed and distinctly fox-like, and it has slender legs with three-toed paws and no visible claws. |

+ | Ninetales is a fox-like Pokémon that possesses nine tails, hence its name. Resembling the nine-tailed kitsune fox of Japanese folklore, they are mainly covered in sleek, luxurious golden-white fur, while the tips of their nine tails are orange. The shiny version of Ninetales has silver-gray fur instead of its usual light cream fur, and its tails are tipped in blue. |

+ | ====Alolan==== |
||
+ | |
||
+ | Alolan Ninetales keeps the traits of Alolan Vulpix. It is a fox-like Pokémon that possesses nine tails, hence its name. It is covered in ice blue fur with snow white legs. On top of its head is a large tuft of hair, similar to its pre-evolved form. This tuft does not curl backwards and instead shrinks backwards into two snow white "ribbons" of hair. It possesses two tufts like this (which shrink into only one "ribbon") on both sides of its ears. Its nine tails are ice blue and also shrink into one snow white ribbon each. Unlike regular Ninetales, these tails form a circle behind the Pokémon. It has majestic blue eyes not unlike those of its pre-evolution. Its ears are pointed and distinctly fox-like, and it has slender legs with three-toed paws and no visible claws. |
||
+ | |||
+ | ===Behavior=== |
||
+ | ====Kantonian==== |
||
+ | Ninetales have high intelligence and strong obsession. They can live for a thousand years when they use the power of their tails. They never let go of their vendetta against ones they have a grudge on, including the person's descendants. |
||
+ | |||
+ | ====Alolan==== |
||
+ | Alolan Ninetales are very gentle, and they will help people who are in danger. Nonetheless, they won't show mercy to anyone who intrudes their territory. It will punish any threat to its pack of Vulpix. Alolan Ninetales resides on the mountains where it is revered as a deity. It is constantly cloaked in a massive snowstorm. |
||
+ | ===Natural abilities=== |
||
− | Additionally, there are no gender differences between male and female Ninetales. The shiny version of Ninetales has silver-gray fur instead of its usual light cream fur, and its tail is tipped in blue. |
||
+ | Ninetales' tails contain different mysterious powers. They can control wisps and flames through mystical forces, as well as hypnotizing victims and prey through flickering flames emitted from their mouths. They can even release odd beams from their red eyes to manipulate a person's heart and mind at their own whims. |
||
+ | Alolan Ninetales can produce multipurpose ice crystals from its fur, which it can use for both offense and defense. The ice crystals can act as a shield or form balls that can be fired like bullets with enough force to shatter rock. |
||
− | ===Special abilities=== |
||
− | All Ninetales have the ability Flash Fire, which powers up its Fire-type moves if it is hit by a fire-type attack. It also keeps it from getting damaged by fire attacks. This does not apply to Dream World Ninetails, who instead possess the ability Drought, creating a permanent Sunny effect for the duration of the battle or until another weather-altering move or ability is used. |
||
==Evolution== |
==Evolution== |
||
− | + | Ninetales is the evolved form of Vulpix, who evolves by the use of a Fire Stone, while Alolan Ninetales is evolved with an Ice Stone. |

+ | Ninetales appears to be based on a fox, more specifically kyūbikitsune, the mystical nine-tailed fox (九尾の狐) of Japanese folklore. When a Kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur changes from the dark red of a fox to white or golden, hence the color change for the evolution. Since many kitsunes are able to transform themselves into women to trick men, this explains why the Vulpix evolution family has more females than males. |

+ | Alolan Ninetales appears to be based on an Arctic Fox, a species of fox that lives in icy tundras and grows a thick white coat during the winter. Its head tuft and tails resemble snow clouds and wisps. It being Ice/Fairy-type may be in reference to Cirno, a fairy character from the Touhou video game series with ice powers who is often associated with the number nine. Alternatively, its Ice typing is a reference to Cocytus, the icy ninth circle of hell reserved for punishing traitors (foxes are stereotypically being seen as untrustworthy) in Dante's Inferno. |

Ninetales (Japanese: キュウコン, Hepburn: Kyuukon) (NINE-tails[1]) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It has a regional form originating from the Alola region which is an Ice/Fairy-type, introduced in Generation VII.
Biology
Physiology
Kantonian
Ninetales is a fox-like Pokémon that possesses nine tails, hence its name. Resembling the nine-tailed kitsune fox of Japanese folklore, they are mainly covered in sleek, luxurious golden-white fur, while the tips of their nine tails are orange. The shiny version of Ninetales has silver-gray fur instead of its usual light cream fur, and its tails are tipped in blue.
Alolan
Alolan Ninetales keeps the traits of Alolan Vulpix.
Behavior
Kantonian
Ninetales have high intelligence and strong obsession. They can live for a thousand years when they use the power of their tails. They never let go of their vendetta against ones they have a grudge on, including the person's descendants.
Alolan
Alolan Ninetales are very gentle, and they will help people who are in danger. Nonetheless, they won't show mercy to anyone who intrudes their territory. It will punish any threat to its pack of Vulpix. Alolan Ninetales resides on the mountains where it is revered as a deity. It is constantly cloaked in a massive snowstorm.
Natural abilities
Ninetales' tails contain different mysterious powers. They can control wisps and flames through mystical forces, as well as hypnotizing victims and prey through flickering flames emitted from their mouths. They can even release odd beams from their red eyes to manipulate a person's heart and mind at their own whims.
Alolan Ninetales can produce multipurpose ice crystals from its fur, which it can use for both offense and defense. The ice crystals can act as a shield or form balls that can be fired like bullets with enough force to shatter rock.
Evolution
Ninetales is the evolved form of Vulpix, who evolves by the use of a Fire Stone, while Alolan Ninetales is evolved with an Ice Stone.

Trivia
- The name Ninetales was misspelled as 'Ninetails' in the Trading Card Game video game adaptation for Game Boy Color. It has also been misspelled on early merchandise such as the Topps Trading cards.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, the Gengar was originally a human that grabbed one of Ninetales' tails and was cursed into the form of a Gengar.
- Ninetales shiny has had a lot of color changes. In Generation III, it was fully lavender. In Generation IV, it turned a purple-gray color with blue-tipped tails.
- Ninetales's original beta name was Ninetai.
- No other Pokémon has Alolan Ninetales' type combination (Ice/Fairy).
- Ninetales has similarities with "Kurama" from "Naruto", "Kyubi" from "Yo-Kai Watch", and "Kyubimon" from "Digimon Tamers".
- Alolan Ninetales is one of the most beautiful Pokémon alongside with (Sylveon, Gardevoir, Glaceon, Milotic, Tsareena and Galarian Rapidash).
- Ninetales is often considered to be a counterpart to Arcanine:
- Both are based on a wild canid species (Ninetales is based on a fox while Arcanine is based on a wild dog)
- Both evolve from their pre evolution via a fire stone
- Both have a regional variant (Alolan Ninetales is a dual Ice/Fairy type while Hisuian Arcanine is a dual Fire/Rock type)
- Both are version exclusives in certain games (Ninetales is exclusive to Blue, Silver, Leaf Green, Soul Silver, Let's Go, Eevee, and Shining Pearl while Arcanine is exclusive to Red, Gold, Heart Gold, Let's Go, Pikachu, and Brilliant Diamond).
Origin
Ninetales appears to be based on a fox, more specifically kyūbikitsune, the mystical nine-tailed fox (九尾の狐) of Japanese folklore. When a Kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur changes from the dark red of a fox to white or golden, hence the color change for the evolution. Since many kitsunes are able to transform themselves into women to trick men, this explains why the Vulpix evolution family has more females than males.
Alolan Ninetales appears to be based on an Arctic Fox, a species of fox that lives in icy tundras and grows a thick white coat during the winter.
Etymology
Ninetales is basically "Nine tails" and "tales" (based on the many legends surrounding this Pokémon).
Kyūkon comes from 九 (kyū, "nine" in Japanese) and コン (kon, onomatopoeia for a fox's bark). Kon is also the Japanese word for curse.
