My name is Morty. I am Ecruteak's Gym Leader. Because my old friend is here on the trail of Suicune, I decided to investigate the Burned Tower. Ecruteak has a legend about these legendary Pokémon: Suicune, Entei, and Raikou. As the Gym Leader of Ecruteak, I must have a proper understanding of it.
Morty, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Morty serves as the Gym Leader of the Ecruteak City Gym. He specializes in using Ghost-type Pokémon, and holds the Fog Badge for the trainers that defeat him. He is the first known male Ghost-type Gym Leader.

Appearance

Morty is a tall young man with golden-yellow hair and dark peridot eyes.

Gold and Silver

Morty wears a light blue bandanna on his forehead. His attire consists of a long sleeved shirt the same color as his bandanna with yellow elbows, jeans and sneakers.

Crystal

Morty's appearance remains the same as it is in Gold and Silver.

HeartGold and SoulSilver

Morty wears a purple bandana. He has a purple scarf with red ends and a round-like symbol. Morty also has a long-sleeved striped black shirt, a pair of purple double bracelets around his arms, some white jeans and a pair of black and purple sneakers with red soles.

Etymology

The name Morty comes from Latin's mortis (death).

His Japanese name, Matsuba, originates from 魔 (ma, demon), 末 (matsu, end), and possibly 絶滅 (zetsumetsu, extinction). Following the plant-based naming of most Gym Leaders, it may also literally be 松葉 (matsuba, the Japanese name for pine needles).

Morty, first appeared in the Generation II games as the Ecruteak City Gym Leader, specializing in Ghost Pokémon. His Gym holds a large, pitch black, pit where the player must navigate their way on a small invisible walkway in order to reach him. Upon defeating Morty, he will reward the player with TM30 (Shadow Ball), and the Fog Badge.

Trivia

Morty's name comes from the Latin "mortis" (of death). Matsuba, his Japanese name, may come from 魔 (ma, demon), 末 (matsu, end), and possibly 絶滅 (zetsumetsu, extinction).
In HeartGold and SoulSilver the player has to visit the Burned Tower and awaken the Legendary Beast Trio before challenging Morty to a Gym Battle.
In his Generation IV artwork the skull on his scarf is the same as the skull on Duskull's head.
He is the only HG/SS Gym Leader to use two of the same Pokémon in his rematch.
When having a phone call with the player character, Morty admits that he favors Raikou and Entei than Suicune.
