Morty, first appeared in the Generation II games as the Ecruteak City Gym Leader, specializing in Ghost Pokémon. His Gym holds a large, pitch black, pit where the player must navigate their way on a small invisible walkway in order to reach him. Upon defeating Morty, he will reward the player with TM30 (Shadow Ball), and the Fog Badge.

Trivia

  • Morty's name may be a play on the word MORTUARY, which is a funeral home, because he is a ghost type trainer. Similarly, it could come from the Latin adjective meaning 'dead', mortuus.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver the player has to visit the Burned Tower and awaken the Legendary Beast Trio before challenging Morty to a Gym Battle.
  • Morty is the only male Ghost-type specialist as Agatha, Phoebe, Fantina, and Shauntal are all females.
  • In his Generation IV artwork the skull on his scarf is the same as the skull on Duskull's head.
  • He is the only HG/SS Gym Leader to use two of the same Pokémon in his rematch.
