The two legendary Pokémon are also the main mascots of the upcoming video games Pokémon X and Y which Xerneas represents Pokémon X and Yveltal represents Pokémon Y. The reason why the two Pokémon have been considered the Gene Duo is due to the reason that they represent the letters of the two gender chromosomes, X and Y.
