the similar group of rarer Pokémon
Legendary Pokémon, as the name suggests, are Pokémon of special legends. They can also be Pokémon illusions. They are very rare and powerful Pokémon, most being unique to only one region. Legendary Pokémon can also be seen as mythological, such as the Sinnoh Legendaries that shaped the world. Legendary Pokémon can only be found once per game file (unless using a cheating device). In the show it is assumed that there are more than one of each legendary throughout the Pokémon World. They are easy to beat but at a high level and hard to catch.

, or are extremely rare and often very powerful Pokémon that are often associated with legends of creation and/or destruction within their endemic regions.

 +
Due to their power, Legendary Pokémon are often the target of villainous groups that seek to control or change the world within both the games and the anime; in the former, thwarting such attempts has been integrated into each game's plot since Generation III.

The are the very first legendary Pokémon to be introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon first appeared in the Kanto region and are often associated with the area.

Kanto introduced four Legendary Pokémon: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo.
The Legendary Birds consist of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. All three reside in Shamoiti Island in the anime, whereas they can be found in the Seafoam Islands, the Power Plant (Generation II), and Victory Road (Generation I)/Mt. Ember (Generation III)/Mt. Silver, respectively. In Pokémon Platinum, all three birds can be found roaming Sinnoh. In the video game, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, the three birds are captured by Cipher and turned into Shadow Pokémon. They are used by the Cipher Boss: Grand Master Greevil

Kantonian Legendary Birds
In the anime, if the three birds are disturbed and quarrel with each other, only Lugia (the legendary bird that swims in the sea) is able to stop them.

The Kantonian Legendary Birds first appeared in the games Pokémon Red, Green, and, outside of Japan, Blue Versions. Articuno is hidden within the Seafoam Islands. Zapdos can be found at the Kanto Power Plant, while Moltres can be captured in Victory Road. Pokémon Yellow featured the trio in their previous locations, while later games featuring Kanto moved Moltres to different areas: in FireRed and LeafGreen, the Flame Pokémon was at Mt. Ember and in Mt. Silver in HeartGold and SoulSIlver. Pokémon Platinum featured the Legendary Birds as roaming Sinnoh after the player character defeats the Pokémon League. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, the three legendary birds appear as Shadow Pokémon and are originally used by Grand Master Greevil. In Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, one of the birds may be found roaming Kalos after defeating the Pokémon League, with the Pokémon depending on the player character's starter. If the player character chooses Chespin, they will encounter Articuno; if they have Fennekin, they will see Zapdos; and if they picked Froakie, they may catch Moltres. The bird must be encountered 11 times, however, before they will retreat to the Sea Spirit's Den and become available for capture. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, the trio are featured in their previous locations from Red, Blue, and Yellow, but can also be found roaming in the sky after the player has beaten the Pokémon League.
Besides the movies, the three birds have also appeared in the anime. Their respective episodes are as follows:

Articuno appears in Freeze Frame, Numero Uno Articuno, and The Symbol of Life.

Zapdos appears in As Clear As Crystal and Doc Brock!.

Finally, Moltres appears in All Fired-Up and The Search for the Legend.

 +
The Galarian Legendary Birds first appeared in the games Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield in their Expansion Pass. During the story of Crown Tundra, the Galarian Legendary Birds can be encountered at Dyna Tree Hill, which triggers a cutscene which all three flee to the three different spots in Galar. Galarian Articuno can be found in the Crown Tundra, Galarian Zapdos is located in the Wild Area, and Moltres can be spotted in the Isle of Armor.
The Mew Duo
Mewtwo is a clone of Mew, one of the Mythical Pokémon.

 +
In the anime, all three Legendary Pokémon appear in the film The Power of One, where they reside at Shamouti Island. Local legend claimed that if the three began fighting, only Lugia could calm the birds. Each Legendary has also been shown in the anime episodes.
Mewtwo, as said earlier, was given birth to by Mew. However, Mewtwo was an angry Pokémon and it destroyed the Pokémon Mansion in which it resided. It then traveled to Cerulean Cave.

 +
In a similar vein to several other Legendary Pokémon, the Legendary Birds are part of a trio, with Lugia serving as a trio master.
Despite being Mew's clone, Mewtwo actually comes first in the Pokédex. Mewtwo is #150 in the National Pokédex and Mew is #151

Anime Appearances
Mewtwo made brief appearances in The Battle of the Badge, Showdown at the Poké-Corral and It's Mr. Mime Time. In the anime, Mewtwo escaped after being used in Giovanni's arsenal for Gym battles. It also plays the main role in the Special Episode Mewtwo Returns.

 +
Their names come from their controlling element and the numbers one, two, and three in Spanish: "Arctic", referring to the geological area, and "uno", one; "Zap", a strike associated with electricity, and "dos", two; and "Molt", from molten and "tres", three.
The Second Generation
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are fused into one Pokémon known as Zapmolcuno.
In Generation II, 6 new Legendary Pokémon appeared.

is a man-made Pokémon created by scientists in the Pokémon Mansion and is a Psychic type.

 +
Mewtwo originally appeared in Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue as a hidden Pokémon. It could be found within Cerulean Cave after beating the Elite Four and becoming the Kanto Region Champion.
The Legendary Beasts consist of Raikou, Entei and Suicune. The trio originally died because lightning struck the Brass Tower they were stranded in and burned to the ground. However, all three were revived by Ho-Oh and now roam Johto.

 +
In the anime, Mewtwo serves as the titular Pokémon in Mewtwo Strikes Back and Mewtwo Returns; in the former, it is revealed that Mewtwo is a genetically enhanced clone of Mew, commissioned by Giovanni. After being controlled by Giovanni, Mewtwo sets out to control the world with its own clone Pokémon.

 +
In Generation VI, Mewtwo was given two Mega Evolutions, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, which feature different stats and abilities. The stones necessary to cause the evolution are Mewtwonite X, which evolves Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo X, a Psychic/Fighting-type, and Mewtwonite Y, which evolves Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo Y, which remains Psychic. The stones could originally be found in Pokémon X and Y, respectively, after capturing Mewtwo within the Unknown Dungeon located at Pokémon Village after defeating the Elite Four and becoming the Champion. Both can also be located in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire in Littleroot Town and the Pokémon League respectively. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, these stones can be obtained after going to Cerulean Cave a second time, after catching Mewtwo, and then, defeating Green.
In the games, the trio roam Johto after being discovered in the Brass Tower. In Pokémon Crystal, however, after discovering them in brass tower, only Raikou and Entei can be found by roaming. Suicine will be faced in the tin tower after disbanding Team Rocket in the radio tower after receiving Clear Bell from the director after winning. In Pokémon Colosseum, they were captured by Cipher and turned into Shadow Pokémon. Finally, in FireRed and LeafGreen, one of the trio would roam Kanto depending on the Starter Pokémon chosen by the player. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, You have to follow Suicune around until you meet him outside Bill's house. You can only catch Suicune in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver if you have beaten Lance and the Elite Four. Raikou and Entei will roam Johto. Raikou, Entei and Suicune are a bit like the bird trio except that Suicine is a Water type and not a Ice type. In the game a person is after Suicune it somehow always escapes him.

Anime Appearances
 +
The are the second set of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series and originate within the Johto region.
The three Legendary Beasts have appeared together in the movie Zoroark: Master of Illusions as the guardians of Crown City. In the movie they appeared as Shiny Pokémon. They all have had solo appearances in movies and specials (Not including Raikou who has never made an solo movie appearance). However, each beast did, in fact, make at least one appearance in the anime.

Entei appeared in Entei at Your Own Risk.

Raikou briefly appeared in Houndoom's Special Delivery.

Suicune appeared the most out of all the beasts, being in three episodes: Don't Touch That 'Dile, For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll, and Drifloon on the Wind!. Entei also appeared in the movie The Spell of The Unown as the Unown's illusion. Raikou played a very important role in some Pokémon Chronicles episodes. Suicune also played an important role in the movie Pokémon 4Ever.

 +
Five Legendary Pokémon debuted in Generation II: Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Ho-Oh, and Lugia.
The Tower Duo
Ho-Oh and Lugia are two legendary bird-like Pokémon that were introduced in Johto, although technically Ho-oh is introduced in the very first anime episode, when Ash Ketchum sees it. Ho-Oh is a Fire/Flying type Pokémon, while Lugia is a Psychic/Flying Pokémon.

 +
Legendary Beasts
The history of Ho-Oh and Lugia are similar. Long ago, two towers were built in Ecruteak City. Ho-Oh perched on the top of one tower (Bell Tower), while Lugia perched on the other one (Brass Tower). However, several years later, the Brass Tower was caught in a great fire, causing Lugia to fly away to the Whirl Islands and this also made Ho-Oh fly away to search for a pure-hearted trainer.

The consist of the Electric-type Raikou, the Fire-type Entei, and the Water-type Suicune.

 +
These three Legendaries were originally unidentified Pokémon trapped and killed within the Brass Tower when it burned down due to lightning. Ho-Oh revived the trio with each Pokémon acquiring an attribute of the accident: Raikou, an Electric-type, symbolized the lightning that had struck the tower; Entei, a Fire-type, was the flames that had engulfed the tower; and Suicune, a Water-type, represented the rain that put out the blaze. Those that witnessed the accident and revival of the trio feared their power, causing the beasts to flee. As a result, they are the first roaming Pokémon the player character encounters.
In the games, Lugia can be found in the Whirl Islands after obtaining the Silver Wing. It made an appearance on Navel Rock in Generation III games as an event Pokémon and also appeared in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness as Shadow Lugia. This Lugia could be purified, contrary to what many people thought at first.

 +
In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the trio will individually wander the Johto region after the player character first encounters them in the Brass Tower. In Pokémon Crystal, the player character is also required to force Team Rocket to vacate the Radio Tower and acquire the Clear Bell to meet Suicune in the Tin Tower. In Pokémon Colosseum the trio were captured by Cipher and transformed into Shadow Pokémon; each are owned by different Admins. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, one member may be found roaming Kanto after defeating the Pokémon League; if the player character chose Bulbasaur they may find Entei; if the First partner Pokémon is Charmander, then Suicune is roaming; if the player character has Squirtle, then Raikou can be found. The encounters in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver have similar circumstances to those in Crystal; however, Suicune must be followed throughout the Kanto region until it stops at Route 25, outside Bill's house, where it may be battled. Notably, Eusine chases Suicune throughout the game but is constantly eluded.
Ho-Oh plays a bigger role in the Generation II games and is referred to as the savior of the legendary beasts. After the player finds the Rainbow Wing, Ho-Oh can be obtained atop the Bell Tower. It, too, appeared on Navel Rock as an event Pokémon and as a reward for purifying all Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum.

 +
All three members of the trio have appeared as a major character of separate movies and in episodes of the anime. An Unown-produced Entei served as an antagonist-turned-protagonist in Spell of the Unown, while Suicune helped heal Celebi by purifying a lake's water in Celebi: Voice of the Forest. Shiny versions of each member also appeared in Zoroark: Master of Illusions, where they attempted to defeat a Zoroark.

 +
Unlisted here is Raikou's appearance in the Pokémon Chronicles episode Legend of Thunder!, where it was being hunted by members of Team Rocket.
Anime Appearances
*Lugia played a very important role in Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One, but also played a part in some anime episodes, such as The Mystery is History, A Parent Trapped and A Promise is a Promise, under the name of Silver as the baby of a parent Lugia.

*Ho-Oh was featured much less prominently, only briefly appearing when Ash saves Pikachu from the flock of Spearow, and is severely damaged. Ho-Oh is said to be a Pokémon that gives eternal happiness to someone if it is seen.

The Tower Duo are the two bird-like Pokémon; the Fire/Flying-type Ho-Oh and the Psychic/Flying-type Lugia.

 +
Known as the "guardian of the skies" and "guardian of the seas" respectively, Ho-Oh and Lugia formerly resided in Ecruteak City, claiming the Tin Tower and Brass Tower. When lightning struck the Brass Tower and burned the building, Lugia escaped to the Whirlpool Islands. Ho-Oh remained long enough to revive three Pokémon that had been trapped within the tower, creating the Legendary Beasts, but left in search of a pure-hearted Trainer; thus, Ho-Oh is considered their trio master. It is said that the three Pokémon that died in the tower were a Flareon, Jolteon, and a Vaporeon.
The third generation of Pokémon introduces ten new Legendary Pokémon into the equation.

 +
Both Pokémon appear in the Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions; their method of encounter varies between the games. In Gold, the player character may capture Ho-Oh, a Fire/Flying-type, at the Tin Tower once acquiring a Rainbow Wing after Team Rocket leaves the Goldenrod Radio Tower, and locate Lugia, a Psychic/Flying-type, at the Whirlpool Islands once given a Silver Wing from a citizen in Pewter City. In Pokémon Silver, this is reversed: the player character is given the Silver Wing once Team Rocket leaves the Radio Tower and the Rainbow Wing in Pewter City. In Pokémon Crystal, the player character must capture Raikou, Entei, and Suicune to gain the Rainbow Wing, and visit the Pewter City resident to gain the Silver Wing. Both Pokémon reappear in FireRed and LeafGreen, as well as Pokémon Emerald, but must be gained through an event; they may be found at Naval Rock if the player character has a MysticTicket. Ho-Oh can be caught in Pokémon Colosseum if the player character purifies all Shadow Pokémon in the game, while Lugia can be caught as a Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. Contrary to initial belief, this Lugia is capable of being purified. Ho-Oh and Lugia return again in HeartGold and SoulSilver and may be acquired under similar circumstances, though the player character must also have a Clear Bell and Tidal Bell for each Legendary.
The Weather Trio
The Weather Trio, also known as the Ancient Trio in the 3rd Generation, consists of Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza. Kyogre is said to have the power to bring forth the rain and therefore expand the sea, whereas Groudon is said to ward off rain and expand the land by evaporating the water with light and heat. Finally, Rayquaza is said to be the protector of the skies and is seen living in the atmosphere.

 +
Both Pokémon have appeared within the anime, though only Lugia has made an appearance in a film, The Power of One. In the film, Lugia was the only creature capable of quelling the three Legendary Birds, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, making Lugia their trio master. Lugia was created by Takeshi Shudo, the head anime writer of the film, only for this sole purpose in the film, and was later used on the box art for Pokémon Silver by Game Freak after the movie's success. Lugia has also made an appearance in the film Hoopa and the Clash of Ages. Ho-Oh, however, was the first Legendary Pokémon to appear in the anime, debuting at the end of the first episode of the series. At the time Ho-Oh had not been officially announced nor was it identified in the episode, being endemic to Johto.
Rayquaza is obtainable at the Sky Pillar in the third generation games. Depending on which game was purchased, either Groudon or Kyogre can be caught. However, in Pokémon Emerald, Kyogre can be captured at the Marine Cave and Groudon at the Terra Cave.

 +
The episodes that each Ho-Oh and Lugia have appeared in are listed below.
Anime Appearances
Both Kyogre and Groudon appeared in Gaining Groudon and The Scuffle of Legends. Groudon also appeared in Malice in Wonderland! as an illusion brought upon by Mismagius as did Rayquaza. An evil recreation of a Groudon also made an appearance in Jirachi Wish Maker.

 +
Generation III
Rayquaza appeared in Malice in Wonderland as an illusion, as said before, but the real deal made an appearance in Where No Togepi Has Gone Before!. Also it made a appearance in Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys.

The are the third set of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the series and are native to the Hoenn region.

 +
There are eight Legendary Pokémon introduced in Hoenn: Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latios, Latias, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza.
Legendary Golems
Legendary Titans
The Three Golems are Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. They were said to have been shaped by Regigigas and were made out of rocks and clay, ice, and steel, respectively.

The , also known as the Regi Trio, consists of three Legendary golem-like Pokémon: Regirock, a Rock-type, Regice, an Ice-type, Registeel, a Steel-type. According to legend, they were shaped by their trio master, Regigigas. As their names and typing suggest, Regirock was formed from rocks, Regice from ice, and Registeel from steel.

 +
The trio makes their first appearance in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, as well as in Emerald. Finding the golems is similar in each game: the player character must first travel to the underwater Sealed Chamber, found by diving in Route 134 with a Relicanth and Wailord in their team. Upon completion of the task, each golem will be unlocked and may be found throughout Hoenn. Specifically, Regirock is within the Desert Ruins of Route 111, Regice is in the Island Cave on Route 105, and Registeel inside the Ancient Tomb, in Route 120. Each comes with their own specific tasks and requirements: in Ruby and Sapphire, to gain Regirock, the player character must read the inscription then move right twice, down twice, and use Strength; to find Regice, the player character must read the inscription and wait two minutes without interacting with the game; to fight Registeel, the player character must read the inscription, then use Fly in the center of the room. In Pokémon Emerald, the player character must instead use Rock Smash, run around the chamber while staying next to the walls, and use Flash for Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, respectively. In Pokémon Platinum, Regirock may be found at the Rock Peak Ruins, Regice at the Iceberg Ruins, and Registeel within the Iron Ruins; however, they are event-only. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the method of acquiring the golem trio is the same as it is in Ruby and Sapphire. The trio, along with Regieleki and Regidrago, can be found in temples of the same names as Sinnoh's within the Crown Tundra included in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass.
Regirock is located in the Desert Ruins in Generation III, where as Regice and Registeel are located in the Island Cave and Ancient Tomb, respectively.

 +
All three of the trio have appeared in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, as guardians of the Tree of Beginning. A Regirock, Regice, and Registeel also belonged to Pyramid King Brandon in the anime.
In Pokémon Platinum, though, this changed. Regirock was then located at the Rock Peak Ruins, which Regice at the Iceberg Ruins and Registeel at the Iron Ruins. They could only be obtained through an event, however.

The Eon Duo is formed by the twin Pokémon Latios and Latias.

 +
Both Pokémon are Dragon/Psychic-type, identified as the "Eon Pokémon"; in all instances, Latios are male and Latias are female. The duo is said to be a brother-sister duo. Both are roaming Pokémon in their first appearance, with Latios appearing in Pokémon Ruby and Latias appearing in Pokémon Sapphire. In Emerald, the player character selects which Pokémon will roam Hoenn after defeating the Pokémon League. In all three games, if the player character has the Eon Ticket, they may encounter the other Pokémon on Southern Island. Both reappear in HeartGold and SoulSilver as roaming Pokémon, with Latias appearing in HeartGold and Latios in SoulSilver; they will only roam the Kanto region in these games. Once the player character has defeated the Pokémon League and obtained the National Pokédex, they may bring the event-only item, the Enigma Stone, to Steven Stone in Pewter City. He will identify it as a Soul Dew and the Eon Pokémon that does not roam the Kanto region will attack the player character. Should they fail to capture the Pokémon, it will continue returning to the same spot it was encountered.
All three of the golems appear under the care of Pyramid King Brandon. These Regis appeared in the episodes A Pyramiding Rage!, Pace - The Final Frontier! and Pillars of Friendship together.

 +
As of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, both Pokémon are capable of Mega Evolving using Latiosite or Latiasite. In addition to aesthetic changes, each Pokémon's stats and abilities change upon evolution.
All three Regis appeared in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew as guardians of the Tree of Beginning.

 +
Both Pokémon appear in the film Heroes: Latios and Latias as guardians of Alto Mare. The film focuses on the Soul Dew, which the film confirms as a Latios'/Latias' crystallized soul. Tobias used a Latios during the Lily of the Valley Conference. Nurse Joy used a Latias in a battle against Forrest in Pewter City. They both also appear in their Mega forms in the film Hoopa and the Clash of Ages. Ash soon encountered a wounded Latias after she crash-landed into a lake during his travels. But after healing her while protecting her from Team Rocket, she began to follow him while being invisible.
Regigigas appeared in Giratina and the Sky Warrior. It awakened from within its temple to help several Mamoswine stop a glacier from crushing a nearby town.

The , also known as the , is composed of the Water-type Kyogre, the Ground-type Groudon, and the Dragon/Flying-type Rayquaza.

 +
Hoenn's legends claim that Kyogre could call upon rain and created the sea, while Groudon used heat to repel rain and expand the continents, creating land. These two Pokémon clashed whenever they met and could only be stopped by Rayquaza, who lived in the atmosphere. As such, Rayquaza is considered the trio master.
The Eon Duo consist of the twins, Latios and Latias, one being male and the other being female, respectively. They guard the city of Alto Mare and have a strong connection to the Soul Dew. Both can be obtained in their respective games by using the Eon Ticket given out by Nintendo Power. In Emerald, one can be chosen by the player after beating the Elite Four. Whichever one it is, he or she will be roaming Hoenn.

 +
In their original appearances, Groudon could only be caught in Ruby and Kyogre in Sapphire, with both being found at the Cave of Origin. Rayquaza could be caught in all three games, at Sky Pillar; in Ruby and Sapphire, it could be found after defeating the Elite Four, while in Emerald it was battled prior to fighting the Pokémon League. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player character could use the Blue Orb (HeartGold) or Red Orb (SoulSilver) at the Embedded Tower to call either Kyogre or Groudon and battle them. If the player character had a Kyogre and Groudon native to HeartGold or SoulSilver and brought them to Professor Oak, he would give the player character the Jade Orb, which could be used to summon Rayquaza in the same manner. Groudon and Kyogre make similar appearances in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire; however, when the player character battles them, they have undergone Primal Reversion and have signature moves, Precipice Blades and Origin Pulse, respectively. Rayquaza has also gained a Mega Evolution and its own signature move, Dragon Ascent, which is necessary for Mega Evolution in lieu of a Mega Stone.
Anime Appearances
Both have always been seen together in the anime. They appeared in Pokémon Heroes as lead characters and in Pikachu's Ocean Adventure and The Semi-Final Frontier

 +
The are the fourth series of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon originate from and originally appear in the Sinnoh region.
In Generation IV, 14 Legendary Pokémon were introduced.

 +
There are nine Legendary Pokémon that appear in Generation IV: Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, and Cresselia.
The Lake Trio
 +
Lake Guardians
The Lake Trio consists of Uxie, Azelf and Mesprit. When the universe was created, Arceus created Pokémon to protect and embody spirit. As a result, Uxie was created to protect and embody knowledge, Azelf was created to protect and embody willpower and Mesprit was created to protect and embody emotion.

The Lake Guardians, is named for the tendency of its members, Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, to remain in the vicinity of their respective lakes within the Sinnoh region.
In the games, Team Galactic's Commanders capture the Lake Trio for Cyrus and he uses their powers to craft a Red Chain in order to take control of Dialga in Pokémon Diamond or Palkia in Pokémon Pearl and recreate the universe without spirit. In Pokémon Platinum, the Lake Trio's role is extended. When Cyrus takes control of Palkia and Dialga, the Lake Trio try to stop them, but their power is not enough to do so. The Lake Trio also helps the player in the Distortion World to reach Giratina.

Trivia
*Apparently, if Uxie's eyes open, anyone unfortunate enough to look into them is said to suffer memory loss.

 +
All three members are purely Psychic-type, and all three were created by Arceus to protect and embody certain concepts, and later, taught humans these traits. Uxie, who remains at Lake Acuity, represents knowledge; Mesprit, who is close to Lake Verity, symbolizes emotion; and Azelf, who is tied to Lake Valor, is spirit or willpower. Thus, Arceus is considered the master of Lake Guardians.

 +
The Lake Guardians originally appear and play a major role in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, where they are captured by Team Galactic's commanders, so Cyrus may use their powers to create a Red Chain, which will allow him to take control of either Dialga or Palkia, in Diamond and Pearl respectively, in order to recreate the universe without human spirit. In Platinum, he intends on chaining both Pokémon; in this case, the Lake Guardians appear before Cyrus to stop him but are too weak, causing Giratina to open the Distortion World.
The Creation Trio
 +
In all Generation IV games, the Lake Trio will reappear at their individual lakes. Uxie and Azelf may be captured upon encountering them, but Mesprit will flee from the player character and begin roaming Sinnoh.
The Crown Dragon Trio, also known as the Creation Trio consists of Dialga, Palkia and Giratina. When the universe was created, Arceus created Pokémon to craft the universe. Dialga was created to craft time, Palkia was created to craft space and Giratina was created to craft antimatter.

 +
Creation Trio
In the games, Cyrus tries to take control of Dialga and Palkia in order to remake the universe without spirit, a thing that he despises. At the Spear Pillar, one of the two can be captured, depending on which game. In Pokémon Platinum, Cyrus takes control of Dialga and Palkia, but Giratina interferes and ruins Cyrus's plan to recreate the universe when it takes him to the Distortion World. Giratina may be caught at its home, the Distortion World. Palkia and Dialga can be caught at the Spear Pillar after the Elite Four is defeated.

 +
According to Sinnoh legend, when the universe began, Arceus created Pokémon to craft the universe. When Dialga was born, time began, space expanded when Palkia came to be, and Giratina was formed to control antimatter. As such, Arceus is considered the trio master of the Creation Trio.
Anime Appearances
Palkia and Dialga appeared in The Rise of Darkrai where they battled each other in Alamos Town after one of them entered the other's dimension.

 +
In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Cyrus plans on summoning and controlling either Dialga or Palkia at Spear Pillar so that he may recreate the universe; the player character may interrupt and capture the Pokémon instead. In Platinum, he attempts to summon both, but is interrupted by Giratina, who takes Cyrus into the Distortion World for intending to enslave the other members of its trio. The player character may enter the Distortion World and capture Giratina after defeating the Pokémon League.
Giratina appeared Giratina and the Sky Warrior where it attempted to drag Dialga into the Reverse World many times so it could exact its revenge on Dialga. It believed Dialga's battle with Palkia somehow harmed the Reverse World. The mad scientist Zero later captured and copied its powers so he could destroy the Real World to preserve the Reverse World, but was stopped by Ash and a released Giratina.

 +
In the video games, Cyrus tries to take control of Dialga and Palkia which depends on the Diamond or Pearl series, it contains both at the same time in Pokémon Platinum in order to remake the universe without spirit, a thing that Cyrus despises. Dialga or Palkia can be captured at Spear Pillar which depends on the video game. In Pokémon Platinum, Giratina takes Cyrus into the Distortion World after that he was trying to take control of Dialga and Palkia. Giratina can be captured in the Distortion World but Dialga and Palkia can be captured after defeating the Pokémon League, at the Spear Pillar.
The whole trio later appeared in Arceus and the Jewel of Life where they settled their differences to fend off an enraged Arceus.

 +
All of the three members are capable of taking a more powerful form known as Origin Forme, this is said to be their original form. Dialga, Palkia and Giratina are respectively connected to the Adamant Crystal or the Adamant Orb, the Lustrous Globe or the Lustrous Orb and the Griseous Core or the Griseous Orb, and allow the trio to transform.
The Lunar Duo
Cresselia is another one of Sinnoh's Legendary Pokémon. Cresselia represents the crescent moon, which symbolizes hope and good dreams.

 +
All three Pokémon appear in one or more films, and in the anime. Dialga appeared in The Rise of Darkrai, Giratina and the Sky Warrior, and MS012: Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life. Palkia appeared in The Rise Of Darkrai and Arceus and the Jewel of Life, while Giratina was shown in Giratina and the Sky Warrior and Arceus and the Jewel of Life. All three Pokémon appeared in the same episode of the anime.
In the games, Cresselia can be found on Full Moon Island, as part of a post-side quest to find a cure for Sailor Eldrich's son due to a nightmare. At Full Moon Island, when the player finds Cresselia, it will disappear, leaving behind the Lunar Wing that can cure Sailor Eldrich's son of the nightmare. It will then be found roaming Sinnoh and stumbled upon occasionally, in the wild.

 +
Lunar Duo (Cresselia and Darkrai)
Darkrai is another of the Lunar Duo but it is a Mythical Pokémon rather than a Legendary Pokémon. Darkrai is the Pitch-Black Pokémon. He represents the New Moon, which symbolizes fear, helplessness and nightmares. In the games, he can be found through an event in which the player receives a member card to the mysterious inn in Canalave City which is usually locked. On entry, the player is greeted by a man who says "Greetings [Name], we have a reservation for you. Right this way." and he puts you to sleep on the bed there. The player then appears in a dream in which you are on New Moon Island next to Full Moon Island. Here you will encounter Darkrai. When you interact with him, you'll battle him and you can catch him. After you catch or defeat him, you wake up and the inn man is gone. When you walk out, go to the Pokémon Center, and if you caught him in the dream, he should already be in your PC.

Heatran
 +
Cresselia, the Psychic-type "Lunar Pokémon" was first encountered on Fullmoon Island; this is more or less coincidence, as while Cresselia is symbolic of the full moon.
Heatran is one of the other Legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh. Heatran is the spirit and protector of all volcanic activity. Heatran is believed to have been created at the same time Dialga, Palkia and Giratina shaped the universe.

 +
In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Cresselia may be found on Fullmoon Island after defeating the Elite Four. The player character must secure a Lunar Wing for Eldrich's son, who is suffering from endless nightmares. The player character may then travel to the island where they will see Cresselia; the Legendary disappears but leaves a Lunar Wing behind. It may then be found roaming Sinnoh.
In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Buck takes the Magma Stone but later returns it after being told to from his grandfather. After the Stone is returned, Heatran is available for capture.

 +
Cresselia appears, along with Darkrai, in "Sleepless in Pre-Battle".
In Pokémon Platinum, Charon plans to take the Magma Stone from Stark Mountain and use it to control Heatran in order to get the citizens of Sinnoh to give him money by threatening them with Heatran's volcanic powers, but his plan is thwarted when the Looker interferes. Heatran is available for capture after the player stops Charon's plan.

Heatran appears in Pokémon Ranger: Heatran Rescue! where a Pokémon Ranger named Ben temporarily captured it to save it from a catastrophe.

 +
Heatran is a Fire/Steel-type Pokémon, rumored to be the spirit and protector of all volcanic activity.

 +
It is believed to have been created when Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina were brought into being; despite this, it is not included in the trio. Uniquely, Heatran is the only Legendary that may be either male or female, with a 50% chance of either gender appearing in a wild encounter.
The Fifth Generation
In Generation V, 13 new Legendary Pokémon were introduced.

 +
Heatran makes its first appearance in Diamond and Pearl, where it may be found on Stark Mountain after defeating the Pokémon League, visiting Stark Mountain and after the player character talks to Buck's grandfather; Buck will have taken the Magma Stone but returns it after speaking to his grandfather. Once the stone is returned, Heatran will appear on the mountain. In Platinum, Charon, a former member of Team Galactic, plans to steal the Magma Stone and use it to control Heatran, allowing him to extort citizens for money by threatening them with the Pokémon's volcanic powers. His scheme is thwarted by interference from Buck, Looker, and the player character, at which point Heatran may be captured. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, if the player character has retrieved the Magma Stone from Route 18 and brings it to Reversal Mountain, they may meet Heatran. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after Groudon/Kyogre has been captured or defeated, the player character may journey to the Scorched Slab to capture a Heatran residing on the lowest floor.
The Tao Trio
 +
Heatran appears in both the anime and in the film Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
The Tao Trio, also known as The Energy Trio consists of Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem. Each dragon of the trio symbolizes a specific energy and controls a specific type. Reshiram symbolizes Yang and controls fire(Agni), Zekrom symbolizes Yin and controls electricity(Thunder) and Kyurem symbolizes Wuji and controls ice(Frosts, snows & sub-zero temperature). Kyurem has two alternate forms in Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, Black Kyurem and White Kyurem. Black Kyurem is obtained by fusing Zekrom's genes with Kyurem (Pokemon Black 2 only) and White Kyurem is obtained by fusing Reshiram's genes with Kyurem (Pokemon White 2 only). Kyurem can only change forme when the player has acquired the DNA Splicers. It is unknown if the transformation is painful for the dragons.

Anime Appearances
Regigigas
 +

In the anime, Zekrom first appeared in In The Shadow of Zekrom! shooting a powerful lightning bolt at Pikachu, causing Pikachu to lose its ability to use electric attacks.

 +
Regigigas is a legendary Normal-type.

 +
Along with having the distinction of being the only Normal-type Legendary Pokémon to date, Regigigas is credited with the creation of Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. In addition, legends state that Regigigas "towed" the continents into their current positions. As such, Regigigas is the trio master of the Golem Trio.
Reshiram and Zekrom later both appeared in Black - Victini & Reshiram / White - Victini & Zekrom. Zekrom served the Hero of the Ideals and sided with Damon in Black, while Reshiram served the Hero of Truths and sided with Damon in White. Victini was also shown in the movie and falls in the legendary category.

 +
In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Regigigas may be found in Snowpoint Temple after the Pokémon League has been defeated, but in order to capture it, the player character must have all three golem Pokémon in their party. It also appears in Black 2 and White 2 at Twist Mountain with similar requirements: that the League be defeated and having Regirock, Regice, and Registeel in their party. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the player character may find Regigigas at the Island Cave where they caught Regice, but they must visit during the daytime with all three golem Pokémon in their team. In addition, their Regice must be nicknamed and holding a Casteliacone, a Never-Melt Ice, an Icy Rock, or a Snowball.
In Black/White 2 it is revealed that Reshiram and Zekrom were both a single Pokemon that followed twin heroes in bringing an ancient, conflicted Unova into peace. The twins however eventually ended having opposite perspectives, one believing in ideals and one in truth. The Pokemon then split giving birth to Reshiram and Zekrom, while Kyurem was a left byproduct.

 +
Regigigas makes an appearance in the anime and in the film Giratina and the Sky Warrior.
Kyurem is set to appear as the title character in Kyurem VS The Sacred Swordsmen.

The Tao Trio, also known as the Energy Trio, is formed by the Dragon/Fire-type Reshiram, the Dragon/Electric-type Zekrom, and the Dragon/Ice-type Kyurem.
 +
 +
Each dragon is symbolic of a specific energy in Taoism, hence the name; Reshiram is symbolic of Yang and controls fire, Zekrom represents Yin and controls electricity while Kyurem is Wuji and controls ice. The three Pokémon were originally one unidentified dragon until their masters, who were twin heroes, began to argue. The older sought the truth and the younger was idealistic and, the dragon, being unable to concede to one side or the other, split into two in response, becoming Reshiram and Zekrom. Kyurem, then, was created by what remained of the original dragon, although a legend in Lacunosa Town claims it fell to the planet in an icy meteor; its ability to fuse with either Reshiram or Zekrom in Black 2 and White 2 with the DNA Splicers and become either White-Kyurem or Black-Kyurem supports the first legend, however.
 +
 +
Each member appeared as a major character in the franchise's films. Reshiram and Zekrom appeared in the films Black: Victini and Reshiram and White: Victini and Zekrom, where Reshiram and Zekrom switched roles between the Black and White versions of the films. Kyurem acted as the main antagonist in Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice.

The Fairy-type Xerneas and the Dark/Flying-type Yveltal are symbolic of life and death: upon Xerneas' death, it forms a tree and gives life to its surroundings before falling into a 1,000-year slumber, while Yveltal takes the lives of everything around it before falling asleep in a cocoon form.
 +
 +
In Pokémon X and Y, Team Flare attempts to harness the dormant cocoon for its inherent energy and power the Ultimate Weapon; the player character intervenes and captures the Legendary before it can be utilized. Interestingly, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Rayquaza in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have the highest base catch rates due to their individual plotlines requiring the capture of the Pokémon in question.
 +

Both Pokémon appeared in the film Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction.

The Dragon/Ground-type Zygarde has been described as the "guardian of the ecosystem". It monitors the ecosystem and will take action when it senses a threat to it. It does whatever is necessary to protect the ecosystem and will not hesitate to destroy any threat even if the threat is another living being.
 +
 +
It is the only Pokémon to have forms that are not or are questionably Pokémon, as its "Zygarde Cells", being simple and incapable of using moves, are not considered Pokémon. Zygarde Cores are Zygarde without any cells and are also unable to use attacks. If enough Zygarde Cells and come together, Zygarde can achieve its 10% Forme, 50% Forme, or its Complete Forme, which is only used if the ecosystem is under threat and Zygarde believes that it will be otherwise outmatched. Zygarde Complete Forme bears power that exceeds Xerneas and Yveltal.
 +
 +
Zygarde also monitors the balance between Xerneas and Yveltal and will take action when that balance is threatened.
 +
 +
A Zygarde named Squishy played a central role in Pokémon the Series: XYZ.

Normal-type Type: Null and Silvally are man-made Pokémon created by the Aether Foundation in a project led by Faba in order to create a Pokémon powerful enough to fight against the Ultra Beasts, after Lusamine approved the experiment, the Aether Foundation started to search data about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus in Canalave Library, they started to research for the DNA of each Pokémon type creating the RKS System and tried to straighten it in their creation, Type: Full. However, the Pokémon refused the RKS System and the project failed, so, the three Type: Full models were put control masks to control their power, were frozen, and were renamed as Type: Null.
 +
 +
Several years after the failure of the Beast Killer project, Lusamine's son, Gladion, ran away from the Aether Paradise with one of the three models of Type: Null and later, it was able to free itself from its mask, activating the RKS System and revelating its true form; Gladion renamed its new form as Silvally.

They are both said to come from another world.
 +
 +
It was revealed that the duo has an evolutionary line, starting with Cosmog, evolving into Cosmoem, and lastly into Solgaleo/Lunala depending on the version.
 +
 +
In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Lillie's Cosmog evolves into Cosmoem then evolves into either Solgaleo or Lunala at the Altar of the Sunne/Altar of the Moone when she and the player character sound the Sun and Moon flutes together. Solgaleo/Lunala then warp the two to Ultra Deep Sea to help them save Lusamine.
 +
 +
Although Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma are not Ultra Beasts, they have a strong connection to Ultra Space (including the ability to create Ultra Wormholes) and as a result are often claimed to be or likened to the Ultra Beasts in various media.

Legends say that the Psychic-type Necrozma is known as the Pokémon that steals light, long ago Necrozma was a being of light formed and shared its light with other worlds including the world Pokémon, who was the one who gifted Alola with the Z- Crystals and Z-Power Rings, however, ancestors of the people of Ultra Megalopolis tried to take advantage of the power of Necrozma and the result was catastrophic, Necrozma eventually lost its light and acquired a form of a black prism, and hatred for the people of Ultra Megalopolis stole the light of this world and condemned it to eternal darkness.
 +
 +
Necrozma has three alternative forms, Dusk Mane Necrozma when it absorbs Solgaleo, Dawn Wings Necrozma when it absorbs Lunala, and finally, Ultra Necrozma, its original form that is activated when it absorbs all the energy of Solgaleo or Lunala when it's fused with one of them, after this, the Prism Pokémon activate the Ultra Burst, transforming into Ultra Necrozma.

Eighth generation of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. Ten Pokémon originally appeared in the Galar region, and one originally appeared in Hisui region (present-day Sinnoh). The Fairy-type and the Fighting-type Warrior Pokémon, Zacian and Zamazenta, were considered heroes of the ancient Galar region after they saved it from a cataclysmic event named as "The Darkest Day", when several Wild Pokémon were surrounded by the power of Eternatus, turning into their Dynamax form and causing the chaos in Galar. However, after they fall on a deep sleep for still unknown reasons, the people of Galar, believing the heroes were dead, built a memorial at the Slumbering Weald, sealing their sacred weapons in the graves and there they stayed for centuries, being forgotten through the story.
 +
 +
Without their weapons, both assume the "Hero of Many Battles" form, in this state, their base stats don't differ from each other.
 +
 +
When holding their weapons - Zacian, with the Rusted Sword, and Zamazenta, with the Rusted Shield - they revert to their original forms, known as "Crowned Sword" for Zacian and "Crowned Shield" for Zamazenta. In these forms, both gain the Steel type.

The Poison/Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon Eternatus is an extraterrestrial Pokémon that crash-landed 20,000 years ago. In ancient times, it threatened to destroy the Galar region in an event known as the Darkest Day. Chairman Rose tried to revive this Pokémon but was thwarted by the player character.
 +
 +
In its Eternamax form, Eternatus' power grows so immense that it causes a great storm of Dynamax energy around it, ripping holes in spacetime in the midst of the storm as it releases a virtually infinite amount of energy. Its tremendous power can even prevent opposing Pokémon from attacking it as it gathers energy. They use the organ to produce "fighting energy" in their lower abdomen, and increase this energy through unique breathing techniques and intense focus before going into battle.

The Fighting-type Legendary Pokémon of the Isle of Armor, Kubfu, and its evolution, Urshifu, are the most notorious martial artist Pokémon line amongst Fighting Pokémon. Having been residing at mountainous areas far far away from Galar and inhabiting the same region long time ago, they usually went training constantly.

If Kubfu evolves into Urshifu, it grants two different secondary-types based one of two different philosophies it learned:

*Single Strike Style: A Dark type, represents Yang. Heavily focus on power and brutal attacks with just single strikes. Its fighting style is visible bajiquan (tiger style).

*Rapid Strike Style: A Water type, represents Yin. Heavily focus on defense, and speedy attacks, allowing it to enhance its speed to counter opponents' predicted attacks. Its fighting style appears to be crane or mantis style.

However, when Calyrex begins to lose its power from lack of faith, it abandoned the King Pokémon and was forgotten as well. The horses were then reunited with Calyrex thanks to the help of the player in The Crown Tundra story. The Loyal Three consists of the Poison/Fighting Okidogi, the Poison/Psychic Munkidori and the Poison/Fairy Fezandipiti. According to Villager Folklore, the three nobly sacrificed themselves in order to drive out Ogerpon. However, according to the story passed down from The Maskmaker's bloodline, it is quite the opposite. The Loyal Three came to Kitakami due to hearing of the glittering masks of Ogerpon and the maskmaker. They stole them from the Dreaded Den and attacked the maskmaker while Ogerpon was away. In anger and defense, Ogerpon attacked the three, likely killing them. The villagers saw differently and made a monument in the Loyalty Plaza to remember them.
 +
 +
Ogerpon
 +
A completely misunderstood Pokémon, Ogerpon hid from Kitakami in the Dreaded Den for years, only visiting to occasionally watch the Festival of Masks. Ogerpon can change types based on the mask it is wearing. It can use the Hearthflame Mask (making it a Grass/Fire type), the Wellspring Mask (making it a Grass/Water type), the Cornerstone Mask (making it a Grass/Rock type) or the default Teal Mask (making it a pure Grass type) to change both its regular type and Tera type, and the type of its attack Ivy Cudgel.

Disputed Legendary
 +
Several Pokémon are often disputed as to whether or not they are truly Legendary or are often mistaken as true Legendaries.
 +
 +
List
 +
*Arcanine - Arcanine is commonly misconstrued as a Legendary Pokémon, mainly because of an episode (named "Pokémon Emergency!", and known to be the second episode of the show) which showed Arcanine as one of the four Legendary Pokémon on the tablet at the Viridian City Pokémon Center, and because its species description since Generation I has been listed as the "Legendary Pokémon". Despite this, it is not a true Legendary.
 +
*Black Fog - The giant, more cryptic looking version of Haunter which has appeared in several media but never in the games. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, it is considered a Legendary Pokémon.
 +
*Legendary Water Pokémon - A Legendary Pokémon which appears in Misty's dream of the future in "GS128: Enlighten Up!". It resembles the fin on Gyarados when it undergoes Mega Evolution.
 +
*Unown - Unown is believed by many to be a Legendary Pokémon because it is shown in Molly Hale's book about Legendary Pokémon in Spell of the Unown, its power in large number appears to match that of Legendary Pokémon and within the canon of the movie is explicitly referred to as a Legendary Pokémon.
 +
*Black Tyranitar - A powerful Tyranitar in The Golden Boys manga who is said to be more comparable to a Legendary Pokémon than an ordinary one.
 +
*Delibird - The DP Pokédex Book incorrectly states that Delibird is a Legendary Pokémon. Similar to Spiritomb, Rotom, and Spinda, this is just an error out of many in the DP Pokédex Book.
 +
*Spinda - The DP Pokédex Book incorrectly states that Spinda is a Legendary Pokémon. Similar to Spiritomb, Rotom, and Delibird, this is just an error out of many in the DP Pokédex Book.
 +
*Riolu & Lucario - Lucario is thought to be a Legendary Pokémon due to the fact that it starred in a Pokémon movie, which is usually reserved solely for Legendary Pokémon. Another reason is due to the fact that at the time of its release the only way to get a Lucario was by evolving a Riolu which was only obtainable through an in-game event, and thus was only obtainable one time in the game.
 +
*Spiritomb - The DP Pokédex Book incorrectly states that Spiritomb is a Legendary Pokémon. Similar to Rotom, Spinda, and Delibird, this is just an error out of many in the DP Pokédex Book.
 +
*Rotom - Rotom is often thought of as Legendary because there is only one in a given game and it plays the Legendary Pokémon music once battled. It is also labeled as a Legendary in the DP Pokédex Book, although the same book bears several other errors (numbering in the double digits), both major and minor.
 +
*Zorua & Zoroark - Zoroark was thought to be a Legendary Pokémon because, like Lucario, it was the main focus of a movie, a feat normally given only to Legendary Pokémon. Like many other Legendary Pokémon, it was only available as an in-game event in Black & White and Black 2 & White 2 with only one being able to found in each game. In Black & White, a trainer needed an event shiny Raikou, Entei, or Suicune in order to activate the in-game event, and in Black 2 & White 2 it is only available by evolving N's Zorua. This might also be because Zoroark can be freed from a Master Ball in Super Smash Bros. 3DS, something usually only given to Legendaries or Mythicals.
 +
*Volcarona - Many people speculated on whether or not Volcarona was a Legendary Pokémon or not because of the fact that it can only be found one time in a game just like Legendary Pokémon and is found through an in-game event. Volcarona is found at the bottom of Relic Castle and is only accessible after the player character has defeated Team Plasma in Black & White.

For the similar group of rarer Pokémon, see Mythical Pokémon.
Legendary Pokémon

Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモン, HepburnPokémon of Legends), or Pokémon Illusions (Japanese(まぼろし)のポケモン, HepburnPhantom Pokémon) are extremely rare and often very powerful Pokémon that are often associated with legends of creation and/or destruction within their endemic regions.

Due to their power, Legendary Pokémon are often the target of villainous groups that seek to control or change the world within both the games and the anime; in the former, thwarting such attempts has been integrated into each game's plot since Generation III.

Generation I

The first generation Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモンの(だい)(いち)世代(せだい)HepburnDensetsu no Pokemon no Dai Ichi-sedai) are the very first legendary Pokémon to be introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon first appeared in the Kanto region and are often associated with the area.

Kanto introduced four Legendary Pokémon: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo.

Kantonian Legendary Birds

The Legendary Birds (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)(とり)HepburnDensetsu no Tori) are a trio of Legendary Pokémon that resemble birds, consisting of the Ice/Flying-type Articuno (Japanese: フリーザー, HepburnFuriizaa), the Electric/Flying-type Zapdos (Japanese: サンダー, HepburnSandaa), and the Fire/Flying-type Moltres (Japanese: ファイヤー, HepburnFaiyaa).

In the anime, all three Legendary Pokémon appear in the film The Power of One, where they reside at Shamouti Island. Local legend claimed that if the three began fighting, only Lugia could calm the birds. Each Legendary has also been shown in the anime episodes.

In a similar vein to several other Legendary Pokémon, the Legendary Birds are part of a trio, with Lugia serving as a trio master.

Their names come from their controlling element and the numbers one, two, and three in Spanish: "Arctic", referring to the geological area, and "uno", one; "Zap", a strike associated with electricity, and "dos", two; and "Molt", from molten and "tres", three.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are fused into one Pokémon known as Zapmolcuno.

Mewtwo

Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー) is a man-made Pokémon created by scientists in the Pokémon Mansion and is a Psychic type.

Mewtwo originally appeared in Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue as a hidden Pokémon. It could be found within Cerulean Cave after beating the Elite Four and becoming the Kanto Region Champion.

Generation II

The second generation Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモンの(だい)()世代(せだい)HepburnDensetsu no Pokemon no Dai Ni-sedai) are the second set of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series and originate within the Johto region.

Five Legendary Pokémon debuted in Generation II: Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Ho-Oh, and Lugia.

Legendary Beasts

The Legendary Beasts (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)(けもの)HepburnDensetsu no Kemono) consist of the Electric-type Raikou (Japanese: ライコウ, HepburnRaikou), the Fire-type Entei (Japanese: エンテイ, HepburnEntei), and the Water-type Suicune (Japanese: スイクン, HepburnSuikun).

Unlisted here is Raikou's appearance in the Pokémon Chronicles episode Legend of Thunder!, where it was being hunted by members of Team Rocket.

Tower Duo

The Tower Duo (Japanese: タワーデュオ, HepburnTawā Duo) are the two bird-like Pokémon; the Fire/Flying-type Ho-Oh (Japanese: ホウオウ, HepburnHouou) and the Psychic/Flying-type Lugia (Japanese: ルギア, HepburnRugia).

The episodes that each Ho-Oh and Lugia have appeared in are listed below.

Generation III

The third generation Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモンの(だい)(さん)世代(せだい)HepburnDensetsu no Pokemon no Dai San-sedai) are the third set of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the series and are native to the Hoenn region.

There are eight Legendary Pokémon introduced in Hoenn: Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latios, Latias, Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza.

Legendary Titans

The Hoenn Legendary Titans (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のタイタンズ, HepburnDensetsu no taitanzu), also known as the Regi Trio (Japanese: ゴーレムトリオ, HepburnGōremu Torio), consists of three Legendary golem-like Pokémon: Regirock, a Rock-type, Regice, an Ice-type, Registeel, a Steel-type. According to legend, they were shaped by their trio master, Regigigas. As their names and typing suggest, Regirock was formed from rocks, Regice from ice, and Registeel from steel.

All three of the trio have appeared in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, as guardians of the Tree of Beginning. A Regirock, Regice, and Registeel also belonged to Pyramid King Brandon in the anime.

Eon Duo

The Eon Duo (Japanese: イオンデュオ, HepburnIon Duo) is formed by the twin Pokémon Latios and Latias.

As of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, both Pokémon are capable of Mega Evolving using Latiosite or Latiasite. In addition to aesthetic changes, each Pokémon's stats and abilities change upon evolution.

Weather Trio

The Weather Trio (Japanese天気(てんき)トリオ, HepburnTenki Torio), also known as the Ancient Trio (Japanese古代(こだい)トリオ, HepburnKodai Torio), is composed of the Water-type Kyogre (Japanese: カイオーガ, HepburnKaiooga), the Ground-type Groudon (Japanese: グラードン, HepburnGuraadon), and the Dragon/Flying-type Rayquaza (Japanese: レックウザ, HepburnRekkuuza).

All three Pokémon have appeared in the anime and movies. A fake Groudon was shown in Jirachi: Wish Maker, a Rayquaza played the role of the antagonist in Destiny Deoxys, and a Kyogre made a minor appearance in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. All three in their Primal/Mega forms also appeared in the movie Hoopa and the Clash of Ages.

The episodes that each Pokémon has appeared in is listed below.

Generation IV

The fourth generation Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモンの(だい)(よん)世代(せだい)HepburnDensetsu no Pokemon no Dai Yon-sedai) are the fourth series of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon originate from and originally appear in the Sinnoh region.

There are nine Legendary Pokémon that appear in Generation IV: Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, and Cresselia.

Lake Guardians

The Lake Guardians (Japanese: レイクトリオ, HepburnReiku Torio), is named for the tendency of its members, Uxie (Japanese: ユクシー, HepburnYukushii), Mesprit (Japanese: エムリット, HepburnEmuritto), and Azelf (Japanese: アグノム, HepburnAgunomu), to remain in the vicinity of their respective lakes within the Sinnoh region.

In all Generation IV games, the Lake Trio will reappear at their individual lakes. Uxie and Azelf may be captured upon encountering them, but Mesprit will flee from the player character and begin roaming Sinnoh.

Creation Trio

The Creation Trio (Japanese: クリエイション·トリオ, HepburnKurieishon Torio), also known as the Crown Dragon Trio (Japanese: クラウンドラゴン·トリオ, HepburnKuraun Doragon Torio) consists of the Steel/Dragon-type Dialga (Japanese: ディアルガ, HepburnDiaruga), the Water/Dragon-type Palkia (Japanese: パルキア, HepburnParukia), and the Ghost/Dragon-type Giratina (Japanese: ギラティナ, HepburnGiratina).

According to Sinnoh legend, when the universe began, Arceus created Pokémon to craft the universe. When Dialga was born, time began, space expanded when Palkia came to be, and Giratina was formed to control antimatter. As such, Arceus is considered the trio master of the Creation Trio.

Lunar Duo (Cresselia and Darkrai)

Cresselia (Japanese: クレセリア, HepburnCrecelia) is a Pokémon that resembles the Full Moon and dreams, and is the counterpart of the Mythical Pokémon Darkrai.

Cresselia, the Psychic-type "Lunar Pokémon" was first encountered on Fullmoon Island; this is more or less coincidence, as while Cresselia is symbolic of the full moon.

Cresselia appears, along with Darkrai, in "Sleepless in Pre-Battle".

Heatran

485Heatran

Heatran

Heatran (Japanese: ヒードラン, HepburnHīdoran) is a Fire/Steel-type Pokémon, rumored to be the spirit and protector of all volcanic activity.

It is believed to have been created when Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina were brought into being; despite this, it is not included in the trio. Uniquely, Heatran is the only Legendary that may be either male or female, with a 50% chance of either gender appearing in a wild encounter.

Heatran appears in both the anime and in the film Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

Regigigas

486Regigigas

Regigigas

Regigigas (Japanese: レジギガス, HepburnRejigigasu) is a legendary Normal-type.

Regigigas makes an appearance in the anime and in the film Giratina and the Sky Warrior.

It makes a loud, repetetive, robotic beeping noise and appeared in the film Hoopa and the clash of ages where it was being imprisoned with other legendery pokemon in the rings of the true form of Hoopa.

Generation V

The fifth generation Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモンの(だい)()世代(せだい)HepburnDensetsu no Pokemon no Dai Go-sedai) are the fifth generation of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon originate and appear in the Unova region.

Nine Legendary Pokémon appear in Generation V: Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Tornadus, Thundurus, Reshiram, Zekrom, Landorus, and Kyurem.

Swords of Justice (Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion)

The Swords of Justice consists of the Steel/Fighting-type Cobalion (Japanese: コバルオン, HepburnKobaruon), the Rock/Fighting-type Terrakion (Japanese: テラキオン, HepburnTerakion), the Grass/Fighting-type Virizion (Japanese: ビリジオン, HepburnBirijion), and the Water/Fighting-type Keldeo (Japanese: ケルディオ, HepburnKerudio). They exist to protect Pokémon that have lost their homes to humans. Keldeo is the only Mythical Pokémon of the group.

Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, and Keldeo are all Fighting-type as a secondary type in conjunction with their names, i.e. "Cobalt" in Cobalion for Steel-type, "Terra" in Terrakion for Rock-type, "Viridian" in Virizion for Grass-type. and "Kelpie" in Keldeo for Water-type. Only Keldeo has an alternate Forme, its Resolute Form if it knows Secret Sword.

The Swords of Justice are the first Legendary Quartet.

They all made their debut in the film Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice.

Forces of Nature

The Forces of Nature (Japanese自然(しぜん)(ちから)HepburnShizen no Chikara) consists of the Flying-type Tornadus (Japanese: トルネロス, HepburnTorunerosu), the Electric/Flying-type Thundurus (Japanese: ボルトロス, HepburnBorutorosu), the Ground/Flying-type Landorus (Japanese: ランドロス, HepburnRandorosu), and the fairy /flying-type Enamorus— (Japanese: ラブトロス, HepburnRabutorosu)

Tornadus represents wind, Thundurus represents lightning, and Landorus represents ground. Enamorus represents fairies. Interestingly, Tornadus is the first Pokémon that is a pure Flying-type.

By using the Reveal Glass, the player character may change each member from their Incarnate Forme into their Therian Forme, which are vaguely human and animal, respectively. The Forces of Nature is the only Squad of Legendaries to share the same gender, being all-male, (except for Enamorus, being female.) other than genderless.

Landorus is the Squad master of the Forces of Nature.

Tao Trio

The Tao Trio (Japanese: タオトリオ, HepburnTao Torio), also known as the Energy Trio (Japanese: エネルギートリオ, HepburnEnerugī Torio), is formed by the Dragon/Fire-type Reshiram (Japanese: レシラム, HepburnReshiramu), the Dragon/Electric-type Zekrom (Japanese: ゼクロム, HepburnZekuromu), and the Dragon/Ice-type Kyurem (Japanese: キュレム, HepburnKyuremu).

Generation VI

The sixth generation Legendary Pokémon (Japanese伝説(でんせつ)のポケモンの(だい)(ろく)世代(せだい)Densetsu no Pokemon no Dai Roku-sedai) Six generation of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon originally appeared in the Kalos region.

Three Legendary Pokémon have appeared to date: Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde.

Aura Trio

Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde form the Aura Trio (Japanese: オーラトリオ, HepburnŌratorio).

The Fairy-type Xerneas (Japanese: ゼルネアス, HepburnZeruneasu) and the Dark/Flying-type Yveltal (Japanese: イベルタル, HepburnIberutaru) are symbolic of life and death: upon Xerneas' death, it forms a tree and gives life to its surroundings before falling into a 1,000-year slumber, while Yveltal takes the lives of everything around it before falling asleep in a cocoon form.

Both Pokémon appeared in the film Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction.

The Dragon/Ground-type Zygarde (Japanese: ジガルデ, HepburnJigarude) has been described as the "guardian of the ecosystem". It monitors the ecosystem and will take action when it senses a threat to it. It does whatever is necessary to protect the ecosystem and will not hesitate to destroy any threat even if the threat is another living being.

Zygarde also monitors the balance between Xerneas and Yveltal and will take action when that balance is threatened.

A Zygarde named Squishy played a central role in Pokémon the Series: XYZ.

Generation VII

The seventh-generation Legendary Pokémon are the seventh generation of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon originally appeared in the Alola region.

Alola introduced 11 new Legendaries: Type: Null, Silvally, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini, Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma.

Six of the twelve are the first Legendary Pokémon to have evolution families.

Beast Killers

Guardian Deities

The Guardian Deities (Japanese(まも)(がみ)({})HepburnMamorigami) are legendary Pokémon that protect the Islands of the Alola region:

They also choose the kahuna from your island and gift person who they like, they sometimes give Z-Rings or Z-Power Rings for people like Kahunas or as a gift. A long time ago, legends say that the Guardian Deities fought against the Ultra Beasts that invaded the Alola Region.

Sun and Moon Line

The Psychic/Steel-type Solgaleo (Japanese: ソルガレオ, HepburnSorugareo) and the Psychic/Ghost-type Lunala (Japanese: ルナアーラ, HepburnRunaa'ara) are symbolic of the sun and the moon, being seen as emissaries of those celestial bodies; Solgaleo is called "the beast that devours the sun" while Lunala is known as "the beast that calls the moon." They are both said to come from another world.

It was revealed that the duo has an evolutionary line, starting with Cosmog (Japanese: コスモッグ, HepburnKosumoggu), evolving into Cosmoem (Japanese: コスモウム, HepburnKosumoumu), and lastly into Solgaleo/Lunala depending on the version.

Along with Necrozma, Solgaleo and Lunala are also members of the Light Trio.

Necrozma

Legends say that the Psychic-type Necrozma (Japanese: ネクロズマ, HepburnNekurozuma) is known as the Pokémon that steals light, long ago Necrozma was a being of light formed and shared its light with other worlds including the world Pokémon, who was the one who gifted Alola with the Z- Crystals and Z-Power Rings, however, ancestors of the people of Ultra Megalopolis tried to take advantage of the power of Necrozma and the result was catastrophic, Necrozma eventually lost its light and acquired a form of a black prism, and hatred for the people of Ultra Megalopolis stole the light of this world and condemned it to eternal darkness.

Generation VIII

Eighth generation of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. Ten Pokémon originally appeared in the Galar region, and one originally appeared in Hisui region (present-day Sinnoh). Eleven Legendary Pokémon were introduced in Generation VIII: Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, Kubfu, Urshifu, Glastrier, Spectrier, Calyrex, two Regi Pokémon (Regieleki and Regidrago) and Enamorus. The Galarian forms of the Legendary Birds were also introduced.

Hero Duo

Without their weapons, both assume the "Hero of Many Battles" form, in this state, their base stats don't differ from each other.

When holding their weapons - Zacian, with the Rusted Sword, and Zamazenta, with the Rusted Shield - they revert to their original forms, known as "Crowned Sword" for Zacian and "Crowned Shield" for Zamazenta. In these forms, both gain the Steel type.

Galarian Legendary Birds

The Legendary Birds of Generation I also have Regional variants that are seen in the Galar region. Galarian Articuno has the Psychic/Flying type, Galarian Zapdos has the Fighting/Flying type and Galarian Moltres has the Dark/Flying type.

Eternatus

The Poison/Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon Eternatus is an extraterrestrial Pokémon that crash-landed 20,000 years ago. In ancient times, it threatened to destroy the Galar region in an event known as the Darkest Day. Chairman Rose tried to revive this Pokémon but was thwarted by the player character.

Kubfu and Urshifu

The Fighting-type Legendary Pokémon of the Isle of Armor, Kubfu, and its evolution, Urshifu, are the most notorious martial artist Pokémon line amongst Fighting Pokémon. Having been residing at mountainous areas far far away from Galar and inhabiting the same region long time ago, they usually went training constantly.

If Kubfu evolves into Urshifu, it grants two different secondary-types based one of two different philosophies it learned:

 • Single Strike Style: A Dark type, represents Yang. Heavily focus on power and brutal attacks with just single strikes. Its fighting style is visible bajiquan (tiger style).
 • Rapid Strike Style: A Water type, represents Yin. Heavily focus on defense, and speedy attacks, allowing it to enhance its speed to counter opponents' predicted attacks. Its fighting style appears to be crane or mantis style.

Urshifu also has Gigantamax forms depending on the style.

New Legendary Titans

Galar introduces another two Regi Pokémon, Electric-type Regieleki, and Dragon-type Regidrago, bringing the amount of Regi Pokémon to five along with Hoenn Regi Pokémon. Like the Hoenn Regis, they are also created by Regigigas, and their name suggests which energy they are made from. The two Regis have very powerful levels of the energy they are made from, to the extent that ancient people had to seal their power in some way.

In The Crown Tundra, both of them are located in the Split-Decision Ruins. The player can only choose to challenge one of them; if the player chooses to challenge Regieleki, Regidrago becomes unavailable, and vice versa.

Calyrex's Trusty Steeds

The two Legendary Horse Pokémon, Ice-type Glastrier and Ghost-type Spectrier are the trusty steeds of Calyrex in the Crown Tundra of the Galar region. According to Calyrex, they like to eat crops, and both of them have favorite kind of Carrots that they love to eat the most: Glastier likes Iceroot Carrots while Spectier likes Shaderoot Carrots. However, when Calyrex begins to lose its power from lack of faith, it abandoned the King Pokémon and was forgotten as well. The horses were then reunited with Calyrex thanks to the help of the player in The Crown Tundra story. When either Glastrier or Spectier are fuse with Calyrex, their primary type replace Calyrex's Grass type as its secondary type.

Calyrex

The Psychic/Grass-type Calyrex was the first ruler Pokémon in history. A very noble and intelligent Pokémon, it was worshipped as a king of Galar back in ancient times who can envision the three outcomes: past, present, future. It resides at the Crown Tundra.

Calyrex is able to fuse with Glastrier or Spectrier to form Ice Rider Calyrex or Shadow Rider Calyrex, using the Reins of Unity.

Enamorus

Enamorus is the fourth member of Forces of Nature Flying-type Pokémon line representing Love and Hate, and the line's only female member, whose secondary type is Fairy.

Generation IX

Ninth generation of Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon series. These Pokémon originally appeared in the Paldea region. So far, eleven Legendary Pokémon have been introduced in Generation IX: Wo-Chien, Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu, Chi-Yu, Koraidon, Miraidon, Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti, Ogerpon, and Terapagos.

Ride Duo

The Ride Duo is formed by the Fighting/Dragon-type Koraidon and the Electric/Dragon-type Miraidon.

Treasures of Ruin

The Treasures of Ruin is formed by the Dark/Grass-type Wo-Chien, the Dark/Ice-type Chien-Pao, the Dark/Ground-type Ting-Lu, and the Dark/Fire-type Chi-Yu.

Loyal Three

Ogerpon

Terapagos

Disputed Legendary

Several Pokémon are often disputed as to whether or not they are truly Legendary or are often mistaken as true Legendaries.

List

 • Arcanine - Arcanine is commonly misconstrued as a Legendary Pokémon, mainly because of an episode (named "Pokémon Emergency!", and known to be the second episode of the show) which showed Arcanine as one of the four Legendary Pokémon on the tablet at the Viridian City Pokémon Center, and because its species description since Generation I has been listed as the "Legendary Pokémon". Despite this, it is not a true Legendary.
 • Black Fog - The giant, more cryptic looking version of Haunter which has appeared in several media but never in the games. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, it is considered a Legendary Pokémon.
 • Legendary Water Pokémon - A Legendary Pokémon which appears in Misty's dream of the future in "GS128: Enlighten Up!". It resembles the fin on Gyarados when it undergoes Mega Evolution.
 • Unown - Unown is believed by many to be a Legendary Pokémon because it is shown in Molly Hale's book about Legendary Pokémon in Spell of the Unown, its power in large number appears to match that of Legendary Pokémon and within the canon of the movie is explicitly referred to as a Legendary Pokémon.
 • Black Tyranitar - A powerful Tyranitar in The Golden Boys manga who is said to be more comparable to a Legendary Pokémon than an ordinary one.
 • Delibird - The DP Pokédex Book incorrectly states that Delibird is a Legendary Pokémon. Similar to Spiritomb, Rotom, and Spinda, this is just an error out of many in the DP Pokédex Book.
 • Spinda - The DP Pokédex Book incorrectly states that Spinda is a Legendary Pokémon. Similar to Spiritomb, Rotom, and Delibird, this is just an error out of many in the DP Pokédex Book.
 • Riolu & Lucario - Lucario is thought to be a Legendary Pokémon due to the fact that it starred in a Pokémon movie, which is usually reserved solely for Legendary Pokémon. Another reason is due to the fact that at the time of its release the only way to get a Lucario was by evolving a Riolu which was only obtainable through an in-game event, and thus was only obtainable one time in the game.
 • Spiritomb - The DP Pokédex Book incorrectly states that Spiritomb is a Legendary Pokémon. Similar to Rotom, Spinda, and Delibird, this is just an error out of many in the DP Pokédex Book.
 • Rotom - Rotom is often thought of as Legendary because there is only one in a given game and it plays the Legendary Pokémon music once battled. It is also labeled as a Legendary in the DP Pokédex Book, although the same book bears several other errors (numbering in the double digits), both major and minor.
 • Zorua & Zoroark - Zoroark was thought to be a Legendary Pokémon because, like Lucario, it was the main focus of a movie, a feat normally given only to Legendary Pokémon.
 • Volcarona - Many people speculated on whether or not Volcarona was a Legendary Pokémon or not because of the fact that it can only be found one time in a game just like Legendary Pokémon and is found through an in-game event. Volcarona is found at the bottom of Relic Castle and is only accessible after the player character has defeated Team Plasma in Black & White.
