Karrablast (Japanese: カブルモ, HepburnKaburumo) (KAIR-ruh-blast[1]) is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in the Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Karrablast is a small, beetle-like Pokémon. Its head area is black with yellow eyes, it has a yellow underbelly, and is mainly blue with a hinge-looking appendage (which helps it cling onto things) that comes from its back. For some strange reason they evolve when they receive electrical energy while they are attacking Shelmet.

Behavior[]

Karrablast dwell in wetlands where Shelmet can also be found, though they may also wander into grassy fields. They are very territorial, butting heads with other Karrablast using the horns on their head to compete for space. Karrablast can spit a mildly corrosive acid from their mouths to deter predators. This acid rarely has a lasting impact on larger foes, however (unless it makes contact with the eyes or other vulnerable locations), so Karrablast often choose to hide in trees or grasses instead to avoid detection.

These Pokémon feed on soft-bodied mollusks, dissolving their vulnerable insides with acid while leaving their shells intact. They spend much of their time searching for Shelmet to facilitate their evolutions. When they find them, Karrablast will use their horns to pry the Shelmet out of their shells, which they steal for themselves. With some sort of electrical stimulus, such as a trade, both Pokémon can then evolve. In the wild, competition for Shelmet can be fierce between Karrablast, who will invade each other's territories and spar with rivals for Shelmet. Shelmet have been known to use this time to sneak away from the danger.

Evolution[]

Karrablast evolves into Escavalier when traded with Shelmet.

  • Sword

Its strange physiology reacts to electrical energy in interesting ways. The presence of a Shelmet will cause this Pokémon to evolve.

  • Shield

It spits a liquid from its mouth to melt through Shelmet's shell. Karrablast doesn't eat the shell, it eats only the contents.

Trivia[]

  • During Generation V's development, a family of snails were planned to be Karrablast's rival instead of Shelmet. But after having some discussions and believing that Shelmet would provide a good armor for Karrablast, this original snail based Pokémon had no longer been considered by developers and Shelmet had replaced it as Karrablast's rival.

Origin[]

Karrablast seems to be based on the Japanese snail-eating beetle, due to its evolutionary relationship with Shelmet. It also may be based on the bombardier beetle as it uses acidic liquid as a defense mechanism. Its horn having two prongs may make it based on an escargot fork, furthering its relationship with Shelmet, as Karrablast prey on them.

Etymology[]

Karrablast may comes from κέρατο kérato (Greek for "horn"), plastron (the underside of a shelled creature), and blast (referring to its defensive acid).
