A Pokémon Fortune Telling boom turns out to be a Team Rocket plot to steal Pokémon from local trainers. The engineers of this plot, though, are not the Team Rocket regulars, but formidable Butch and Cassidy.[1]

Ash follows suit, using Totodile to defeat Primeape. Ash and Misty finishes them off with Poliwhirl's Water Gun and Pikachu's Thunderbolt.

As Butch and Cassidy are sent to prison, Officer Jenny reassures Ash that the Pokémon will be returned to their rightful owners. When an officer gives Jenny a copy of the book, she pulls out a copy of the real fortune-telling book, and both Misty and Brock obsess themselves over it. At the end of the episode Jessie, James and Meowth also find a copy of the real fortune-telling book. James grabs it and tries to find out if it says he's a Moltres type. He checks his birthday and the episode ends with James having a shocked look on his face saying "It can't be!".

Trivia

  • In the Latin Spanish dub, when James is dressed as a Moltres he mentions "Moltres el guajolote Macías" (translated as: Moltres the turkey Macías), is a reference to José Antonio Macías (aka Pepe Toño Macías), the voice of James in Latin America.
  • Similar to "The Breeding Center Secret" (the final episode of Season 1), this episode is coincidentally also the final episode of a particular season to feature Butch and Cassidy.
  • One of the unnamed male officers was voiced by Eric Stuart.
  • This was one of 3 episodes of Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver to have never been released on DVD in America. This was true until November 2015 when Viz Media released a full DVD set of the Johto Journeys arc including this.
  • The "Who's that Pokémon?" in this episode is Girafarig.
  • Eric Stuart has stated that his favorite line from the series is "I am a flaming Moltres!", which comes from this episode.
  • This is the last episode of the series to be re-dubbed in Italian where Pietro Ubaldi re-dubs over Giuseppe Calvetti's lines as Meowth. Though Calvetti kept his role as Meowth all the way up to the end of season 6, Ubaldi remains the Italian voice of Meowth to this day.
