Inkay (Japanese: マーイーカ, HepburnMaaiika) (in-kay[1]) is a Dark/Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Inkay is a small amphibious Pokémon that resembles a squid. Its body is round and blue in color with a fringe of short tentacles forming its underside. Inkay has very large round black eyes and a small pink beak-like smiling mouth. It has a pinkish white-finned cap-like feature with four bioluminescent yellow spots atop its head. Two short white arm-like tentacles sprout from either side of its cap.

Behavior[]

When in battle, Inkay uses the luminescent yellow patches on its pink cap to hypnotize its foes. When swimming, they swim on their backs and are also able to jump from the water while doing so. It is believed that Inkay will flash their lights in complex patterns to communicate with one another across distances. Curiously, these Pokémon have a habit of turning themselves upside-down for no apparent reason; some believe this action strengthens their abilities.

Evolution[]

Inkay can be evolved to a Malamar at level 30 while having a Pokémon Battle while holding the 3DS or Switch (provided the game is being played in Handheld Mode) upside-down.

    It spins while making its luminescent spots flash. These spots allow it to communicate with others by using different patterns of light.

  • Shield

    By exposing foes to the blinking of its luminescent spots, Inkay demoralizes them, and then it seizes the chance to flee.

Trivia[]

  • Inkay's method of evolution is unique. Its method is the only evolution method that need the player to do something with the console rather than the program.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Inkay is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Topsy-Turvy.

Origin[]

Inkay is based on a squid. Its lights and hypnosis abilities are similar to that of the cuttlefish which are known to rapidly change their color to hypnotize prey. Its lights may also be based on the bioluminescence found in several squid species, such as the firefly squid.

Etymology[]

Inkay comes from ink or inky, ika (Japanese for "squid"), and possibly okay.

Its Japanese name, Maaiika, derives from "まあ、いいか," (maa, iika, Japanese for "oh well"), 魔 (ma, devil or magic) and 真烏賊 (maika, Japanese flying squid)
