Lumiose City is the main city in the Kalos region, and contains the fifth Gym the player character challenges, which specializes in Electric-type Gym and is led by Clemont.

At a population of 416, Lumiose City is the largest and most populated city in the Pokémon world.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set entirely in Lumiose City.

Description[]

Also known as the City of Light, Lumiose City has a unique structural design. It is a big, circular city that is divided into multiple sections:

Boulevards
Avenues
Plazas
  • Bleu Plaza, connecting Vernal Avenue to Estival Avenue.
  • Magenta Plaza, connecting Estival Avenue to Autumnal Avenue.
  • Rouge Plaza, connecting Autumnal Avenue to Hibernal Avenue.
  • Jaune Plaza, connecting Hibernal Avenue to the southeast side of the canal.
  • Vert Plaza, connecting the southeast side of the canal to Vernal Avenue.
  • Centrico Plaza, being the center of the city.

Additionally, there are numerous alleys running across the avenues and the two boulevards. The alleys branching from the boulevards always lead to a dead end, while those running across the avenues are long and may even contain Trainers.

During the first visit to the city, there is a shortage caused by Team Flare's actions in Kalos Power Plant. As a result, the player may only access the South Boulevard and Vernal Avenue until Team Flare has been defeated in the Power Plant.

Lumiose City is also where the post-game storyline, the Looker chapters, takes place.

Additionally, the player can read a top-secret memo if they have a Volcanion in the party:

The secret of the power

On the XXth day of the XXth month
at the Pokémon Day Care on Route 7
About the extraordinary power that Volcanion is
said to possess.
Discussed it with a top Breeder who's very familiar
with the ecology of the Pokémon and drew the
following deduction.
In order to cause a steam explosion powerful
enough to blow up mountains, the Pokémon must
have an organ with extremely high temperature
that can instantly vaporize water into steam.
That kind of organ is unheard of in the ecology
of Pokémon, but Volcanion may have it...

In the fog

On the XXth day of the XXth month
at the Pokémon Center in Camphrier Town
Interviewed a Trainer who says he witnessed a
Pokémon who could be Volcanion when he was
stranded in a mountain.
According to the Trainer, a huge Pokémon's
shadow appeared suddenly.
Two huge armlike limbs that could crush even
the land extended from its back, and from their tips,
something that looked like smoke belched out and
made the fog around the Pokémon even thicker.
the Trainer said the Pokémon's shadow
slowly disappeared in the fog.

A nation-building...

On the XXth day of the XXth month
at Café Kizuna in Lumiose City
In the southern part of the Kalos region,
there seems to be a custom to revere
Volcanion as a nation-building Pokémon.
People seem to believe that a steam explosion
caused by Volcanion created the plain
where they live.
As a matter of fact, a huge mountain range
suddenly disappeared due to an unexplained
explosion in that part of the region in the past...

Lumiose Conference stadium

Lumiose City also offers an international airport that has flights serving Kanto, Hoenn, and other regions within the Pokémon world. A battlefield is available on the airport's observation deck for Trainers wishing to battle while waiting for their flight.

Trivia[]

  • Like Kalos being based on France, Lumiose City is based on France's capital city, Paris. The Prism Tower is based on the Eiffel Tower and the plaza's names are colors in French.
    • Lumiose City's name may be derived from Paris's nickname, "La Ville-Lumière", which means "The City of Light".
      • Also, the layout of the city is also extremely similar to the area of Paris surrounding the Arc de Triomphe.
  • There used to be a glitch where saving in the boulevards of Lumiose City would instantly corrupt the save file and freeze the game. If it occurred, the player would have to format the save and start over. It was particularly easy to encounter, as unsuspecting players would be tempted to save in what is easily the largest and most disorienting city in Kalos.
    • As a result of this, Nintendo released an updated version of the game to stop the glitch, and players who were affected by this glitch could continue their Pokémon adventure.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire in Mt. Pyre 1F, the Hex Maniac would say "No, you not the one" to the player character when talked to, similar to the Hex Maniac the player would encounter in the unnamed office building west of Route 14 gate.
  • In the anime series, this is the location where Ash's Kalos journey both begins and ends as he arrived in the first episode and departed in the final episode. This was also the setting of the Flare incident in the XYZ season.
  • When the Power Plant's power has been restored and the Prism Tower is lit up, Shauna will say that Clemont and Bonnie are her friends.
