At first, Gilbert was a spoiled little boy who only wanted rare and strong Pokémon, like Raichu and Torchic because they were "special". He even mentioned that he wanted Ash's Pikachu, but as he looked for the escaped Bulbasaur with Ash Ketchum's Pokémon and friends, he realized that the bond between Trainer and Pokémon and eventually chose Bulbasaur as his First partner Pokémon.
