Flint is a character appearing in Pokémon the Series, who is a member of the Elite Four in the Sinnoh region.

Appearance[]

This section, or a part of it, has been transcluded from Flint (Sinnoh); any changes involving it should be made there instead. /

Flint is a slim and tall man. He wears a yellow t-shirt and dark grey pants with a red belt. He wears black sandals. His hairstyle is Afro, colored red. He wears 2 black bands on his wrists.

Personality[]

Flint is a concerned yet good-spirited Trainer. He cares a lot about his friends, especially the once-depressed Volkner. He may be a little simple-minded, but Flint means well despite his tendency to be very casual in his attitude.

Etymology[]

The name Flint name comes from "flint", a type of stone used to create sparks and thus start fire.

His Japanese name, Ōba, likely comes from オーバーヒート (ōbāhīto, overheat).

Biography[]

When Flint was young, he encountered Volkner. Defeating his Pikachu, Flint became Volkner's rival, who trained hard to overcome him, and eventually won. The two guys continuously battled one another, testing each other's strength. One day, Flint and Volkner encountered a poacher, and battled his Houndoom. Volkner's Pikachu nearly got hurt, as Volkner grabbed it to prevent it from getting slammed to a tree. Despite getting badly hurt, Volkner and Flint did not give up and defeated the poacher.[1]

Flint eventually challenged the Pokémon League, but had a hard time. It was then when he realized that he should not improve only his strength, but his willpower as well to win.[2] While Flint became the Elite Four, Volkner became Sunyshore City's Gym Leader. Since then, Volkner grew disinterested in battling, and Flint attempted to convince him to become more enthusiastic about battling.[1]

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl[]

When the heroes encountered Lucian, the latter told them that he, along with Flint and the rest, were members of the Elite Four. He reminded that they were powerful Trainers, who had to be defeated in order to challenge the Pokémon Champion, Cynthia.[3] When the heroes encountered Aaron, Officer Jenny reminded them of Elite Four Flint, who specialized in Fire-type Pokémon.[4]

Flint also appeared in the ending scene of the 13th Pokémon movie, along with his Infernape.[5]

Flint was visiting his friend Volkner at the Sunyshore City's Gym when he encountered Ash Ketchum and his friends, who were attacked by a robot. Flint had Infernape attack the robot to save them, and took them in the Gym. Inside, he encountered Volkner's Raichu, who hugged him. Volkner appeared as well, whom Ash wanted to challenge. Volkner still had no interest in taking challenges and offered Ash to take the Badge anyway, even if Flint tried to persuade him to do otherwise. The group left to a restaurant, where Ash pondered thoughts about battling Volkner, who was the strongest Gym Leader.

Flint told them how powerful and passionate a Trainer Volkner was, to which the latter walked in. Flint wanted Volkner to battle Ash, but Volkner simply replied they were not kids anymore, angering Flint. A bartender advised them to let Flint battle Ash instead, while Volkner watched their battle, with disinterest. At the Gym, Flint's Infernape easily defeated Ash's Buizel, to which Ash sent his own Infernape. However, Flint's Infernape easily blocked its Flame Wheel and defeated it with its own Mach Punch. When Pikachu was sent out, it held its own against Infernape, as it collided using Volt Tackle against its Flare Blitz, but was ultimatively defeated. While Ash lost, Dawn reminded he did have the honor to battle the Elite Four, while Volkner was moved enough to agree to battle Ash.[1]

Flint was watching Ash battle Volkner until the power went out. Going to Sunyshore Tower, the group saw that Team Rocket modified it to be a vehicle and drove off with the tower, and fly off with it. Flint started to climb atop the tower with Ash and Volkner, but failed and fell in the sea. Because the tower flew off, Brock and Flint started to pedal the bikes to power up the generators, until they were fixed, whereas Ash and Volkner managed to land the tower down.[6] When the heroes encountered Bertha, Brock accidentally revealed her secret that she's the Elite Four member, to which the heroes compared her strength to Flint and the other Elite Four members.[7] The heroes also encountered Narissa, and eventually realized she dressed herself up like Flint, whom she admired for his strength.[8]

Flint watched Ash's battle against Volkner, after the Gym has been repaired. When Pikachu's Thunderbolt did not work against Electivire, Flint reminded that Electivire's Motor Drive provided resistance against Electric-type attacks. He was pumped up seeing Infernape and Luxray's battle: both sides were exhausted, and thus both sides had an equal chance to win. After Ash won the battle, Flint told that he had to go to the Lily of the Valley, where the Sinnoh League would be held.[9]

Seeing Team Rocket trying to steal Kenny's Empoleon, Flint had his Infernape blast them off. He then turned to the heroes, wishing them luck, and informed them that Volkner's battling spirit has returned. Meeting with Jasmine, a Johto Gym Leader, she challenged Flint of the Elite Four, by sending Steelix against his Infernape, but lost the battle. Jasmine admitted she learned a lot about the battle and was told Flint didn't attack from the start, since he wanted to study his opponent's moves first. Flint reminded that he still had to give his best.

When Flint came out of the restaurant, he was approached by fans, whom he signed autographs to. Ash asked him about his time in the Pokémon League, to which Flint reminisced, and told him he had to work on his willpower. He later thought things through, and decided to challenge Cynthia. As the heroes were heading to the Sinnoh League, Flint bid farewell to them.[2] The heroes watched Flint's Infernape battle against her Garchomp's powerful Stone Edge on live television. Ash enjoyed watching the battle and became determined to become a stronger trainer who will defeat the Champion someday.[10]

Pokémon Journeys: The Series[]

Flint had a World Coronation Series battle against Leon, where he used his Infernape against Leon's Charizard, only to lose, causing his rank to drop from 7 to 8.[11]

Sometime after this, Flint ended up getting demoted from the Master Class, as Iris ended up in said class.[12]

He and Volkner, alongside their Infernape and Electivire, watched Iris and Cynthia's Masters 8 match on Volkner's Rotom Phone outside his Gym.[13]
