Smeargle (Japanese: ドーブル, HepburnDooburu) (SMEAR-gull[1]) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Smeargle is light brown in color, it has a light brown cap on its head, a slightly pudgy torso, and a light brown tail. On its front legs it has two brown stripes on both arms, it has one brown stripe on its hind legs. The tip of its tail oozes paint, which varies in color for each Smeargle. The color paw-print on its back is the same color as the paint from its tail. In the games, Smeargle's tail is commonly shown as green.

Behavior[]

Smeargle live alone, but do maintain groups of “comrades”; comrade Smeargle will pass through each other's territories, share details of food source locations with each other, and even paint each other's bodies for fun. Their tails secrete a colorful, viscous fluid that they uses to paint trees, marking their domains in this manner. Different Smeargle have “paint” of different colors; the hue is determined by a variety of factors, including genetics, diet, and environment. Recent studies have shown that the intensity of their "paint" color changes based on their emotions. Smeargle born around the same time in the same area will become comrades with one another. These groups remain close for life, though they will separate and claim their own territories upon reaching adulthood. Before Smeargle leave their groups, their comrades will paint footprint markings on their backs; if they ever meet again, they will be able to distinguish each other by the pattern. Smeargle can paint over 5,000 different kinds of brush strokes with their tails. They are the only Pokémon known to learn the move Sketch. Wild Smeargle paintings are a fairly esoteric market, but enthusiasts will pay quite hefty sums of money for certain symbols and patterns.

Natural abilities[]

Smeargle can have one of two abilities, Own Tempo or Technician. Own Tempo is an ability which prevents the user from becoming confused. Technician will increase the power of any of the user's moves by 1.5 if their power is less than 60.

Smeargle is unique in that it can learn essentially any move with its signature move Sketch which copies the last move used in battle. The only moves that can't be Sketched are Chatter and Struggle. Because of this, most TMs will not work on it. Smeargle cannot Sketch Shadow moves. However, if Smeargle uses Lucky Chant before using Sketch, Shadow Moves can be Sketched.

Evolution[]

Smeargle does not evolve.

Trivia[]

  • Smeargle can always remember its signature move, Sketch, without having to level up by going to the Move Reminders in any core series or Mystery Dungeon game.
  • Smeargle is one of the 16 Pokémon to be made into a puppet in Japan.
  • Smeargle is one of the collectable spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • The method used to encounter Smeargle in Pokémon GO is one of the most unique among all the Pokémon currently available: It has a small chance of showing up in snapshots the player takes, and upon exiting camera mode, the Smeargle will spawn in the overworld with the same moves as the Pokémon the player took pictures of.
  • Although some of the Pokédex entries say that each Smeargle has a uniquely colored tail and paw print marking, they are typically depicted as green (red if shiny).
    • However, the anime has shown Smeargle with other colors.

Origin[]

Smeargle is based on a combination of a beagle and a painter.

Etymology[]

Smeargle's name comes from the words "smear" (a stain from a kind of substance, in this case a paint brush) and "beagle" (a breed of dog).

Its Japanese name, Dōburu, comes from dog, doodle and dabble (a term used in art which means to put on a little bit of paint). It could also be a corruption of double, referencing how it copies opponents moves in battle.
