Kiawe is a Trial Captain that specializes in Fire type Pokémon. Kiawe appears in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.

Appearance

Kiawe is a muscular, dark-skinned young man. He has red and brown hair, in a style resembling fire. He wears red shorts with a black outline and sandals with the same color scheme. He wears no shirt, though he does have some black cloth strips on his shoulders bound to his necklace, which has a small badge and feather decorations.

Personality

At first glance Kiawe comes off as grumpy and short-tempered, but underneath his searing exterior lies a mature and calculative individual.

Etymology

The name Kiawe comes from the "kiawe" tree, a type of mesquite that is considered an invasive species in Hawaii and is often used as firewood.

His Japanese name, Kaki, could come from either カキ (kaki, fire) or the "kaki" persimmon.

Biography

Sun and Moon

During the events of Pokémon Sun and Moon, Kiawe is one of the Trial Captains a part of Alola's Island Challenge. As his trial, Kiawe asks the player character to identify the differences between two dances. He does this three times until the player challenges Totem Salazzle. Afterwards in Pokémon Sun, the player character can visit his house. He'll tell he's practicing fire dances, and then that he will fight the player character at the Thrifty Megamart. Once defeated, he will talk a bit and leave.

Trivia

• During a scene in Sun and Ultra Sun, Kiawe is hinted at having been saving up to go to another region to practice dance via working part-time at the Thrifty Megamart, but when the player gets there he has been fired based on the conversation between him and his former boss.
