Koga served as the Gym Leader at the Fuchsia City Gym. Two years later, during the Generation II games, Koga also became a member of the Elite Four and his daughter, Janine took over his gym and used Poison-type Pokémon as well.

He specializes in Poison-type Pokémon, and as a Gym Leader gave out the Soul Badge for Trainers that could defeat him.

Appearance[]

Koga is a man with black spiky hair. He usually wears dark ninja outfits, along with a red scarf.

Red, Green and Blue[]

Koga's appearance is as described previously, additionaly, he also has bands on his arms.

Yellow[]

Koga's appearance remains the same as it is in Red, Green and Blue.

Gold and Silver[]

Koga's appearance in Gold and Silver, Remains almost the same in those games, however, the colors on the ninja outfit seem to vary less, being mostly black to dark purple.

Crystal[]

Koga's appearance remains the same as it is in Gold and Silver.

FireRed and LeafGreen[]

Koga's appearance in those games remains almost the same, but his hair seems to be dark blue rather than black, and the outlines in his outfit as well as the scarf has now an orange colour.

HeartGold and SoulSilver[]

Koga's outfit has purple outlines. He also wears protective grey bracers on his legs, as well as bands on his wrists.

Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee![]

Koga has black, spikey hair and bushy eyebrows. He is always wearing a red scarf over his mouth and nose. He has a purple ninja-style outfit, with black finger gloves and boots. He has a white belt around his waist.

Personality[]

Koga shows himself as an intimidating foe, using Poison-type Pokémon, whose moves poison or lull the opponent to sleep, despite him trying to seem intimidating and telling his opponent that they rather had no chance on winning, upon defeat Koga shows himself disposed to embrace defeat and glorifyes his foe's victory by telling them that "You have proven your worth", but also promising to looking forward to have another battle with them soon, where he promises to raise victorious.

Etymology[]

The name Koga originates from Kōga-ryū, a school of ninjutsu that focused on, among other techniques, poisoning.

His Japanese name, Kyō, may originate from 凶 (kyō, misfortune), 戮 (kyō, kill), or 杏 (kyō, apricot, as apricot seeds are poisonous).

Games[]

Red, Green and Blue[]

Koga first appears in the games as the Fuchsia City Gym Leader. His gym was constructed with an array of invisible walls, fashioned into a maze. This forces the player to walk through the maze fighting Gym members, with the destination in the middle where Koga awaits.

Yellow[]

His role in Yellow is the same as it is in Red, Green and Blue.

Gold and Silver[]

Later, in the Generation II games, Koga has been promoted to Elite Four status. With the absence of a Gym Leader at Fuchsia Gym, Koga leaves the Gym under his daughter's care, Janine, making her the new Gym Leader.

Crystal[]

His role in Crystal is the same as it is in Gold and Silver.

FireRed and LeafGreen[]

In the remakes of the original games, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Koga is once again a Gym Leader, as it takes place during the same time period. The only difference is the level of his Weezing, and his updated appearance.

HeartGold and SoulSilver[]

In the remakes of the original games, Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, Koga's role as an Elite Four member remains the same, as it takes place on the same time period, however, it is now possible to have a rematch with him, in which he will had a team with generation 3 and 4 pokémons, and the relation with his daughter Janine becomes more visible, with her bringing her father's lunch at the Pokémon League reception, as well as caring and feeling proud about her father's job at the Elite four.
