The March of the Exeggutor Squad (Japanese: ナッシーぐんだんだいこうしん!, HepburnThe Exeggutor Squad's Big March!) is the 43rd episode of Pocket Monsters of Pocket Monsters (1997 series), Season 1 of Pokémon the Series, and Pokémon: Indigo League of Pokémon the Series: The Beginning.

Synopsis[]

Our heroes continue their Pokémon training without a break even over spring vacation, when what should appear before them but a carnival. Ash, Brock and Pikachu join in the fun, eventually discovering a rather dull magic show being performed in a small cabin. The magician begs Misty to become his assistant, but because of his poor magic skills, the magician is fired. Feeling sorry for him, Brock, Ash and Misty suggest working together to create a Pokémon magic show.[1]

Episode plot[]

Coming to a town in the middle of a carnival, the heroes begin to enjoy themselves in their own ways. Misty and Pikachu decide to go their own way to explore. They find a man named Melvin, a magician, who is attacked by a woman. She knocks him down and leaves. Misty walks over to check on the man and help him up. The man is grateful, but in a tough spot. He needs an assistant for his magic show, and so he asks Misty to do it for him. She is hesitant, but agrees to do it, but only for one day. The show begins and quickly Misty finds that it's not everything it needs to be. Melvin's first trick is juggling his Exeggcute, which is less than entertaining for everyone. He decides to move on to his next trick, summoning fire from his wand. Att first, it's a tiny, disappointing spark. But upon a second try, it's a large flame that Misty begs him to be careful with. Not paying attention, Melvin accidentally starts the sprinklers which pelts the viewers with water. The crowd enters an uproar and begins to throw things at Melvin before leaving. Melvin is then fired for the stunt, where he proceeds to give up on his dreams of being a magician. Ash hopes to help Melvin by displaying a trick involving his pokemon, Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur. However, the three pokemon begin to fight with each other, ruining the trick. Ash suggests that Melvin do something like that, saying that his Exeggcute can't do much. In response to this, Exeggcute uses Hypnosis on Ash, allowing for Melvin to control him. Seeing the potential in this trick, Melvin would run off with Ash. Ash is forced too pull Melvin by cart into the Leaf Forest to capture more Exeggcute, where they find the evolved form, Exeggcutor, and attempt to use hypnosis to capture them. Unbeknownst to them, Team Rocket appears to abscond with the captured pokemon. Unfortunately for Team Rocket, Melvin's Exeggcute evolves into an Exeggcutor and uses Hypnosis on the other Exeggcutor and sends them into a rage, causing them to march on the town. By this time, Ash is beginning to return to normal. They rush back to the town to find the carnival completely demolished. The Carnival Owner tells them that he's going to destroy the threat with timed explosives he set in the center of the carnival. Ash and his friends rush to stop the mob of Exeggcutor from marching on the carnival center to protect them, but neither Bulbasaur nor Squirtle seem capable of stoping the mob, so it's left to Charmander, whose attacks are Super-Effective. Despite everything, Charmander is not strong enough, and they request Melvin to do his fire trick again. He summons a flame from his want, which causes the Exeggcutor to stop. Melvin is then reunited with his pokemon as the bomb goes off harmlessly in the distance. After this touching scene, Ash finds that Melvin's Exeggcute is not the only pokemon to evolve, as Charmander evolves into a Charmeleon whose attitude is as spicy as the flames it spits in his face. After this, the team continues on their journey.

Trivia[]

PokeGirl Misty

Misty in a Goldeen Girl outfit

  • This episode introduces Poké-girl outfits: A type of outfit that's similar to a bunny-girl suit except only Pokémon considered beautiful can be the design of these outfits. In this case: Melvin's old assistant wore a Vulpix-girl outfit and Misty wore a Goldeen-girl outfit.
  • Melvin's old assistant was also voiced by Rachael Lillis.
  • The "Who's that Pokémon?" in this episode is Exeggcute.

Mistakes[]

TB043 error 1

Exeggutor's uncolored lip

TB043 error 2

Jessie without lipstick

  • Exeggcute evolves into Exeggutor only by using a Leaf Stone and Melvin's Exeggcute didn't use one when it evolved (in Japanese version James even mentions that there is no stone).
  • The upper lip of the far right head of Melvin's newly evolved Exeggutor wasn't colored in all the way.
  • When Melvin's Exeggutor uses Hypnosis on Team Rocket, Jessie's lipstick is missing.

Dub differences[]

  • In original version Darla claims that Melvin's shows never had an audience while in the dub she says that nobody is going to watch his lousy show.
  • In the original version, when Darla beats up Melvin, she orders him to let go of her while in the dub she says that she heard his promises before.
    • Also, in the original version, after getting beaten by Darla, Melvin simply begs her not to leave while in the dub he also says that he needs her.
  • In the original version, Melvin states that he wants to make it to Broadway while in the dub he claims that he wants to make it to Las Vegas.
  • In the original version, after Charmeleon blasts fire at Ash's ear, Ash says, in ironic manner, that Charmeleon is lively while in the dub he tells it to be careful with breathing fire.
