Beauty and the Beach (Japanese: アオプルコのきゅうじつ, HepburnHoliday at Porta Vista), formerly titled Beauty and The Beach, is the 18th episode of Pocket Monsters of Pocket Monsters (1997 series), Season 1 of Pokémon the Series, and Pokémon: Indigo League of Pokémon the Series: The Beginning.

Synopsis[]

After finally escaping the deserted island, our heroes arrive in Acapulco, the world's greatest resort. They begin their vacation on endless beautiful beaches lined with palm trees. Ash, Misty and Brock go joyriding in a cruiser belonging to an old man and, inadvertently, break it. Our heroes and their Pokémon work temporarily for the old man to pay off their debt. Business is booming, creating resentment from his main competitor. As a result, Team Rocket is employed to interfere. Ash and friends only see this as a temporary set back, and come up with a plan that will blow the old man’s competitor and her co-conspirators, Team Rocket, out of the water. During all of this commotion, Professor Oak and Ash's mother unexpectedly show up to witness Ash defeat his competitors and prove himself to be one step closer to becoming a Pokémon Master.

As our heroes reach Porta Vista, they decide to take some time off and enjoy the ocean. Misty is ready for this, having her own swimsuit on. This causes Brock and Ash to stop dead in their tracks, seeing her dressed like a girl. Ash in his infinite wisdom states this outloud and gets a beach ball thrown in his face. It is later that Ash finds a boat that Pikachu stands on. He erroneously thinks that Brock rented it and takes it out for a spin. Meanwhile, Team Rocket, in their Gyarados Submarine. They're spying the tourists they plan to target with their schemes. But as they're not paying attention, Ash crashes into them and sinks them. Ash then smashes into the dock and damages the boat. It is then that the true owner of the boat comes out and is not very happy with what Ash did. Ash then offers to work hard to fix the boat. They end up working at a restaurant owned by the boat owner, Moe. And as Team Rocket washes ashore, they beg a woman named Brutella to let them work at her restaurant. She agrees. As it turns out, Moe and Brutella are rivals, and this rivalry sparks one between their workers, Ash and the heroes, as we as Team Rocket. Moe's restaurant is slowly losing the rivalry, but Ash sends his pokemon out to give out flyers and help run the shop. Team Rocket however sends Meowth to sabotage them. Brutella then proceeds to tell Moe that she's calling in all her debts on him and wants them paid within 24 hours or she will take his boat as collateral. Moe is saddened by this, but Ash tells him not to lose heart. Then, Ash is surprised to see Professor Oak, who is on vacation with Delia, and tells them about the Beach Beauty and Pokémon Costume contest and recommends Ash to advertise to the tourists coming to see it. And so, Ash sends his Pidgeotto out to airdrop in flyers. This causes a surge in Moe's guests. Misty is convinced to join the contest and is its first contestant as the show begins. As she preforms, she is soon cut off by Team Rocket who are themselves cut off by Gary Oak and his entourage of cheerleaders. Meanwhile, Brutella meets with Team Rocket and identifies them as members of the Pokémon Mafia. She fixes their submarine, but blackmails them into destroying the contest so that Moe's restaurant will fail. Ash and Gary bicker on stage while Brock attempts to keep the peace. But Team Rocket show up in their submarine and attempt to scare of all the beach-goers. This is largely successful, despite Ash's attempt to stop them. However, as Team Rocket sends off a missile, Ash uses Charmander and its flames to distract the missile, as it is heat-seeking. Sending Team Rocket Blasting off with Brutella, the missile eventually lands in Brutella's restaurant, destroying it and saving Moe's restaurant. As this comes to a close, the team say goodbye to Porta Vista and continue on their way.

Trivia[]

TB018 Dare da after
WhosThatPokémon18US
  • As the episode was dubbed as a special lost episode, it isn't attached to any of the dub's season groups, and therefore the English dub (or any version that dubs from the English dub) has not been seen outside of the United States and is not available on home video releases. It was only aired twice on Kids' WB! and is not mentioned on Pokémon.com.
  • The dub's English name is a pun to the story "Beauty and the Beast".
  • Aopulco is the Japanese name for Porta Vista, the island resort where this episode takes place.
  • In the dub, all of the signs are still in the Japanese language, making this the very first time a Pokémon episode is dubbed in English, but is left leaving all of the signs in Japanese.
  • This is the first episode where Team Rocket's Gyarados submarine appears.
  • Misty's beach ball looks like a Master Ball.
  • Due to this episode originally being banned and undubbed through its original 1998 run, Maddie Blaustein provided the English voice for Meowth in this episode, not Nathan Price, as it was dubbed during the time where Maddie Blaustein took over as Meowth's dub actor.
  • Team Rocket made a reference to the classic 1980's show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous".
  • Because it was a "Beauty and Pokémon contest" it is in a way the first appearance of a Pokémon contest.
  • This episode was originally banned mainly due to James cross-dressing in a bikini and his use of inflatable breasts, which seemed too sexual. When James said to Misty "Maybe one day, you'll have a chest like this!", while slightly juggling his inflatable breasts was also cut. It was eventually dubbed in English and aired in America as a "lost episode", but it edited out any sight/mention of the breasts, so it eventually received an official English dub.
  • In the original 1997 airing of the episode prior to the "Cyber Soldier Porygon" incident, there was a single frame during the scene where Misty hits Ash with the beach ball, with Pikachu holding up a sign saying "日本一" (The Greatest in Japan). This was cut following the aforementioned incident, and is therefore not shown in Kids Station reruns, the dub, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. It is, however, still shown on Hulu Japan as the versions of episodes "Pokémon Emergency!" to "Ditto's Mysterious Mansion" streamed on there use the original 1997 cuts.
  • In this episode, Misty meets Gary for the first time.
  • This episode marks the first and only time Delia Ketchum wore a bathing suit, which was a green one piece.

Mistakes[]

  • In the English version, Brock calls Misty's Starmie a Staryu.
  • Meowth's paw has pads on it when he is talking to Jessie about fixing the Gyarados Submarine.
  • When Ash was turning around at the end of the episode, his backpack had its colors mixed.
  • When Ash said "I choose everybody", Butterfree didn't come out of its Poké Ball.

Dub differences[]

TB018 cut scene

The deleted scene.

  • Parts of this episode were edited from the original Japanese format due to the controversy while James is seen with fake breasts appearing in a swimsuit. This scene was cut from the dub.
    • Moreover, Jessie and James' involvement in the beauty contest was also edited out in the dub.
  • The line where Moe tells Misty he's looking forward to her in eight years, whereas Misty's age is 10, is changed to say she reminds him of his granddaughter in the dub to be more age-suitable.
  • The English words "GAS" and "OIL" written on the canisters were painted out in the dub.
  • The trophy which says 「日焼け美女と仮装ポケモンコンテスト 優勝」Tanned Beauty and Masquerading Pokémon Contest - First Place is changed to say "FIRST PLACE IN OUR HEARTS: Ash Ketchum" in the dub.
