Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is the third sequel in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game series released on November 23, 2012 in Japan. It was first announced to the public in the Japanese CoroCoro magazine on September 12, 2012.

Starter Pokémon[]

In each Mystery Dungeon game, the player plays as the selected Pokémon. Unlike the other handheld Mystery Dungeon games, the Pokémon is directly chosen rather than through a quiz.

Furthermore, one can befriend and have all starters by going to:

  • Uncharted Road via Dreamy Island (Befriend Pikachu and Oshawott)
  • Uncharted Road via Rusty Mountain or Moonlit Forest (Befriend Snivy)
  • Uncharted Road via Smokey Mountain (Befriend Tepig)

Plot[]

The game begins when the Player enters a strange dream hears a voice from somewhere which tries to tell him/her to save the Pokémon world, but then screams for help, and the Player sees a vision of a Munna being chased by a Hydreigon. The player then sees his/her reflection being changed from a human into a Pokémon before falling through a portal. The Player exits in the middle of the sky and falls to the ground. They are awoken by the Partner and the two introduce themselves to each other. The Partner is curious how the Player ended up falling out of the sky and the Player reveals they used to be human. To the Player's surprise, the Partner believes their story and reveals they are fascinated with mysteries and the unknown. However, the Partner remembers they have a very important meeting to get to and asks the Player to help them get through a difficult path that is on the way through the meeting.

After the two get across the path, they reach a crossroad and the Partner thanks the Player for their help before the two travel to a nearby barren area. They meet a Quagsire who is the owner of the land and the Partner buys it from him despite Quagsire's warnings about the desolation of the area and the new Mystery Dungeons popping up. After Quagsire leaves, the Partner reveals to the Player they bought the land to create a paradise for all Pokémon and to be a base for their adventures. Upon hearing the Partner's dedication and excitement toward their dream and realizing they have nowhere to go, the Player decides to stay with the Partner and help them with their dream. The Partner is ecstatic at the news, but the Player is secretly concerned about why they were summoned and the vision they saw. The Player puts their worries aside for the moment and decides to focus on helping the Partner who declares they will build their paradise.

Later that night, the two camp out in the land and the Partner decides the first task they should do is build a house to sleep in before going to sleep. The next morning, Quagsire arrives to check on the two and the Partner explains their goal to build a home. Quagsire reveals there is a team of carpenters in Post Town, a town near the land. The three travel to Post Town where Quagsire introduces the Player and Partner to the local business before witnessing an argument between the locals. Quagsire notes that Pokémon all over have been more and odds with each other and it's only getting worse before moving on and introducing the Player and Partner to the carpenter's apprentices, a pair of Timburr. The Timburr takes the two to meet their boss, Gurdurr and he agrees to build a house for them. Gurdurr explains that he needs gems from a dungeon called Stony Cave to trade for building materials. Before the two leave for Stony Cave, the Timburr approach them to try and tell them a message, but ultimately back out and leave.

After the two find some gems in Stony Cave, they head back to Post Town. On the way back, the two are bumped into by a Scraggy before going to see Gurdurr. However, the Partner discovers the gems they acquired are gone and can't pay Gurdurr. The two wonder what happened to the gems and notice the Scraggy from earlier sneaking off and decide to ask him about the gems. Before they can go after Scraggy, the Timburr stop them and reveal Scraggy stole the gems and is heading to Hazy Pass. The Partner asks the Timburr how they know about Scraggy, but they refuse to answer and leave. The two decide to confront Scraggy.

The two travel to Hazy Pass and find Scraggy, but the Player sees someone coming and the two hide. Gurdurr arrives and is revealed to be working with Scraggy in a scam where Scraggy pays to Gurdurr send Pokémon to retrieve gems and Scraggy steals them to sell them for a higher price in the west. Infuriated at being tricked, the Player and Partner come out of hiding and confront the two crooks. After the two defeat Gurdurr and Scraggy, the latter flees and the former refuses to back down. Suddenly, the Timburr arrive and beg Gurdurr stop his scam. Gurdurr realizes it was the Timburr who spilled where Scraggy was and the Timburr plead with him to return to honest work. Gurdurr knocks out the Timburr and somberly leaves while the Player and Partner tend to the Timburr. The Timburr reveal that Gurdurr was once a great and successful carpenter, but one day, he became injured, and his once great abilities became hindered. Despite the deterioration of his abilities, Gurdurr still had pride in his work until a vile customer destroyed a house they built for him just to wound their pride. The experience ruined Gurdurr's confidence and he turned to crime and the Timburr told the Player and Partner about Scraggy an in attempt to convince Gurdurr to return to their work. After the Timburr's story is finished, the Player and Partner decide to still have Gurdurr build their house to bring him back to his old self and to see a house built by someone with Gurdurr's passion. The group catches up to Gurdurr and the Player and Partner defeat Gurdurr again when he attacks under the assumption the two are out for revenge for being tricked. Afterward, the Partner asks Gurdurr to build their house to his surprise. Gurdurr shows the two the injury that caused him to lose his expert carpenter abilities and explains his cynic world view and that he doesn't have ability to work as a carpenter anymore. The Timburr object and reveals the Player and Partner know about Gurdurr's history, but still want him to build their house. The Partner tells Gurdurr that they don't care about how good the house is, but the heart and passion that is put into it and that the Timburr still believe in him. Moved to tears, Gurdurr agrees to return to carpeting and build the two a house before breaking down into further tears. Everyone returns from Hazy Pass and Gurdurr and his apprentices build the Player and Partner a house and finish in a few days. Despite the house being a bit shabby, everyone is happy with how it turned out and the Partner declares it to be their new home.

The next morning, the Partner decides the next step is to start expanding the barren land into a paradise by adding facilities. To do that, they need at least two more Pokémon on their team to register as adventurers. Afterward, the two find Quagsire waiting for them and he takes them to a request board he placed so the two can take requests to earn items and money. The Partner takes a request to rescue a Dunsparce from Stompstump Peak and the two head out to find him. While searching, they meet one of Dunsparce's friends. Emolga, who is also searching for Dunsparce and reveals Dunsparce has a habit of getting into trouble and needing to be rescued. The two eventually find Dunsparce and bring him back where he and Emolga give their thanks. Emolga tells Dunsparce to be more careful with his adventuring and learns that Dunsparce left to get one of the crystals found in the dungeon. The Player and Partner give him one of the crystals they picked up during the search.

Some time later, an adventurer called Virizion enters Post Town and instantly attracts the attention of everyone in town (particularly the boys who are all in love with her). The Player and Partner accompany Dusparce and Emolga to meet Virizion and Emolga reveals Dunsparce also has a crush on Virizion and got the crystal as gift so he could become her friend. Virizion reveals she travels around on a whim and came to Post Town to see it's legendary Rainbows of Hope, beautiful overlapping rainbows, but is informed they stopped appearing long ago. With encouragement from the others, Dunsparce presents his gift to Virizion, but she rejects it because she doesn't make friends with anyone and she considers Dusparce to be too weak to even be considered an ally. Dunsparce runs away in tears and Emolga chastises Virizion for her coldness and goes after him. Virizion justifies her actions by claiming the world is full of people who can't be trusted and before leaving and two Pawniard spying on the scene decided to go after Dunsparce. The Player and Partner decide to go find Dunsparce to see if he is okay after being rejected, but can't find him in town. Quagsire enters town and reveals he saw Dunsparce leave with the Pawniard after they offered him a way to become strong fast and that Emolga went after him. Realizing Dunsparce may be in trouble, the two head to Desolate Canyon, where he was taken, unaware Virizion was watching the entire conversation.

Some time in Desolate Canyon, Dunsparces decides to stop following the Pawniard after he realizes getting strong is not what he really wants and that he is being tricked. However, the Pawniard brothers refuse to let him leaves and prepare to mug him of all his money, but Emolga arrives to help with the Player and Partner right behind him. The Pawniard then reveal they have reinforcements and the group prepares to fight, but Virizion arrives to help along with Gurdurr and the Timburr. The group manages to defeat the baddies and send them running. Afterward, Gurdurr reveals Virizion told him about the trouble Dunsparce was in and Dunsparce apologizes for being suckered into the Pawniard's scheme. Emolga comforts him and explains that he managed to realize he was being tricked before it was too late and helped fight them off. Virizion apologizes to Dunsparce for being so cold to him earlier, but tells him trusting others in the current state of the world is a mistake. The Partner objects and states that there are still Pokémon worth trusting and asks Dunsparce and Emolga to join their team. The Partner explains their dream to build a paradise and Dunsparce and Emolga agree to join the team and even Virizion asks to join to everyone's surprise. Against Emolga's objections, the Partner agrees to Virizion's request on the condition she tries to trust her fellow team members. As she leaves, Virizion recalls a conversation she had with Gurdurr when she asked him to help save Dunsparce and Gurdurr's story about reforming thanks to the Player and Partner's efforts was what pushed her to join their team.

The next day, the Partner is ecstatic about having new members and explains to the Player that a group called the Helping Adventurous Pokémon Prosper Institute (HAPPI) recognizes groups of four or more Pokémon as adventure team and gives them support. They meet with the other members of their team and a Pelipper delivering a letter from HAPPI asking for their team name so they can be registered as an official team. After inputting the team name, Quagsire arrives and reveals he has prepared a gift to celebrate the team being formed. Quagsire's gift turns out to be Scraggy who has been coerced into reforming after Quagsire, who is actually a famous reformer of criminals, punished him. A box from HAPPI arrives and Quagsire explains how to use the badges inside to recruit new members inside dungeons and also explains move growth. He also reveals Scraggy will help team members remember and forget moves (much to the latter's chagrin as his fear of Quagsire's wrath keeps him in line).

The next day, Gurdurr reveals he is setting up a shop in Paradise to the delight of the Player and Partner. However, Gurdurr is having trouble getting back into shape for carpentry and asks the two to find him a Sturdy Vine to help him get back into peak form. After obtaining a Sturdy Vine, the two deliver it to Gurdurr who quickly gets back into shape and opens his shop where he can prepare land and build new facilities.

A few days later, a blazing comet races across the sky toward Paradise. When the Player and Partner leave to start the day, they meet Dunsparce and Virizion and discover a strange wind is blowing through the area. Virizion identifies the phenomenon as a the V-Wave, strange waves that change type every day and empower Pokémon whose type matches that of the wave. Emolga arrives and reveals Quagsire wants everyone to come to the Paradise Center. There, Quagsire reveals he set up a board that reveals the forecast for V-Waves. However, the comet from earlier crashes into the board and when the blast clears, a Victini appears with a new shop. Gurdurr reveals Victini is a Pokémon that visits during the V-Wave and Victini reveals he has brought his V-Wheel that can help change the V-Wave type of the day. That night, while the Player sleeps, they have dream where they hear a scream for help before waking up. The Player recognizes the screaming from when they became a Pokémon and contemplates the vision they received about the pink Pokémon being chased before going back to sleep.

The next day, the Player decides to maintain their routine until a clues about why they were brought to the Pokémon world appear. When the Player and Partner leave to start the day, Dunsparce asks them to come to Post Town to see a special mirage that can be seen from the hill. When the three reach the hill, Virizion and Emolga show them a mountain in the far distance. Virizion explains it is the Great Glacier, a giant mass of ice that is surrounded by ever changing crevices and freezing wind that make it impossible to access; making it a complete it a complete mystery to outsiders. The Partner is inspired to one day explore the glacier and desires to become experienced enough to traverse it.

That night, an unidentified Pokémon sneaks the outskirts of Post Town. Meanwhile, the Player has another dream where a voice asks for help, but the Player wakes up. The Partner notices the Player is distressed and the Player tells them about the strange dreams. The Partner realizes the voice asking for help is the same that brought the Player to the Pokémon world and that the dreams are slowly becoming more clear. When they leave to start the day, the two get some notes from HAPPI stating that a suspicious Pokémon has been spotted lurking around Post Town. Afterward, Quagsire asks the two to deliver some money to Swanna at the inn in Post Town to pay for a meal he had yesterday that he had to put on credit and he is unable to make the trip due to a bad back. When the two get to Post Town, they find empty due to everyone being scared by the notice of the suspicious Pokémon. The two pay deliver Quagsire's money and Swanna assures them the notice is not to be too worried about, but admits life has been getting worse. Other Pokémon in the inn admit that the relation between Pokémon is growing worse, everyone is losing hope, and that there is a looming feeling of dread there will be a calamity if life keeps going on like this. The Partner decides to put the depressing subject behind for now and continue their work.

The next day, the two are greeted by Emolga and Dunsparce, but are interrupted by the arrival of a Leavanny and Lillipup. Leavanny asks the group to find her missing son, Swadloon, and Lillipup guesses he might be lost in Inflora Forest while looking for some rare items. The Player and Partner decide to check Inflora Forest and leave to search there. As they search for Swadloon, the latter reaches the end of Inflora Forest and after finding strange objects buried in the dirt with a red jewel, is approached by the Pokémon that has been sneaking around Post Town. When the Player and Partner find Swadloon, he is alone and they take him back to his mom at Paradise. Swadloon apologizes to his mom for worrying her and gives her the red jewel he found as a birthday gift and he joyfully embraces with her and Lillipup. Leavanny gives the group a reward as thanks for finding Swadloon and heads home with him and Lillipup. As the Partner comments on the happy family's bond, the Player begins to Wonder about the Partner's family. That night, the Partner asks the Player about their friends and family from the human world, admitting they have been alone without a family as long as they could remember. They couldn't even make any friends due to the worsening relationships between Pokémon, but they never stopped trying to find true friends and that led them to create a Paradise where they could make such friends and is glad they made one with the Player. Meanwhile, the Pokémon that Swadloon encountered reaches the gate of Post Town, but collapses at the entrance. The next day, Emolga reveals the suspicious Pokémon has been taken to Swanna's inn to recover after collapsing and the two go to investigate.

At the inn, the two see a large crowd has gathered and go inside. There, they find Gurdurr trying to interrogate the Pokémon and has to be calmed down by Swanna. The rest of the Player's team arrives and Virizion identifies the Pokémon as Umbreon, an old acquaintance and a dungeon researcher who was investigating the Great Glacier along with another Pokémon called Espeon. Despite the many questions the group has about Umbreon, his current condition prevents him from answering and the group goes back to their daily schedule. The next day, one of Timburr arrives and reveals Umbreon is awake, but he is desperate to leave Post Town despite his injuries. Everyone returns to the inn and Umbreon reveals he fled to Post Town because he and Espeon were attacked. To escape their pursuers, Umbreon and Espeon split up, but Espeon is still being hunted. Emolga asks why anyone would attack them and Umbreon explains they were after special cards they carry called Entercards. Entercards have the ability to manipulate the paths of mysterious energy inside mystery dungeons called Ley Lines and Umbreon demonstrates they can be rearrange Ley Lines to create Magnagates, portals to mystery dungeons that can exit in distant places, including the Great Glacier. However, without Espeon's set of Entercards, the Magnagate won't work and Umbreon guesses their attackers were after the Entercards. Everyone decides to go and save Espeon, who fled to the Crags of Lament.

As the Player and Partner travel across the Crags of Lament, Espeon continues running from her unseen pursuers. Espeon soon reaches a dead end and is cornered by her pursuers, a Croagunk and Purugly, who demand her set of Entercards. When Purugly searches Espeon for the Entercards, she discovers they aren't on her. Before the two can attack Espeon to force her to tell where the Entercards are hidden, the Player and Partner arrive and defeat them. After Toxicroak and Purugly are defeated, they flee and the Player and Partner bring Espeon back to Post Town. There, Espeon and Umbreon reunite and formally thank the Player and Partner. Though she has no idea who their attackers really were, Espeon confirms that Toxicroak and Purugly wanted the Entercards and Umbreon guesses they wanted to use them to travel to the Great Glacier. The news that the two have a way to reach the Great Glacier shocks everyone and Umbreon explains the two had dedicate their research into studying the Great Glacier to learn if the rumors of a crystal with strange powers exists inside. However, the Glacier's natural boundaries make it impossible to get to unless Entercards are used to alter Ley Lines to create a dungeon that exits inside the Glacier's boundaries. Umbreon determines the Espeon no longer has her set of Entercards and assumes they were stolen, but Espeon reveals she hid them before entrusting them to Swadloon, who found them buried inside Inflora Forest when she went to check on them. Swadloon returns the Entercards to Espeon, who tearfully apologizes for risking getting Swadloon pulled into her danger, but everyone is understanding. Umbreon asks if he and Espeon can stay in Post Town where they are safe and the townspeople agree to let them stay. That night, the Player and Partner discuss the day's events and decide to help Umbreon and Espeon with their goal.

The two check on Umbreon and Espeon the next day and the latter join the former's team because they need the Player and Partner's help to explore the Great Glacier when they finish the Magnagate. Everyone is shocked to learn the two have been invited to the Great Glacier and the pair accept the offer, adding Umbreon and Espeon to their team. Umbreon explains he and Espeon are close to finishing the Magnagate, so they will be unable to go of jobs until its finished. The Partner understands the situation and everyone prepares for the trip to the Great Glaciers. That night, Virizion finds Dunsparce outside, trying to reminisce about the time he saw the Great Glacier, and sits down to talk with him. Dunsparce reveals his dream is to help Pokémon in need and Virizion apologizes for cruelly rejecting his offer of friendship, much to Dunsparce's joy. Emolga discovers the two talking and eavesdrops on their conversation. Dunsparce tells Virizion he is not the cowardly weakling he used to be and is excited for the chance to prove himself at the Great Glacier. Emolga is glad to here Dunsparce is coming out of his shell and grows excited to go to the Great Glacier with him.

The next morning, Quagsire greets the Player and Partner and explains he has bad news. Since the trip will take longer that normal jobs, a rule create by HAPPI states that at least one member of the team must stay behind to watch over Pokémon Paradise. After some discussing with the team, Dunsparce decides to stay behind since he's the weakest, but Virizion beats him to it and declares she's staying behind (much to Gurdurr's excitement). Though the team is depressed they have to leave Virizion behind, they go to Umbreon and Espeon to explain the situation. Umbreon and Espeon reveal the Magnagate to the Great Glacier will be ready the next day and are told of Virizion's decision to stay behind. They argue that Virizion has to go to the Great Glacier because she once had a friend named Keldeo who supposedly went to the Great Glacier and disappeared. Virizion searched for Keldeo, but never found a trace until a she got a letter from Keldeo stating the trip to the Great Glacier was a lie to get from Virizion and cuts off their friendship. Virizion was so hurt she closed herself off to others until she joined the Player's team. When she met Umbreon and Espeon, she asked to go to the Great Glacier when the chance was available, still hoping to find Keldeo. The remaining team members become conflicted about keeping Virizion behind after hearing her story, even Emolga is outraged by Keldeo's betrayal. Dunsparce realizes his conversation with Virizion the previous night is what spurred her to stay behind and offers to take her place, but the group settles on an idea by Emolga to draw straws to everyone has a fair chance of being picked to stay behind.

The next day, everyone conducts the drawing and Dunsparce gets the short straw. Despite objections from other team members, Dunsparce accepts the result and wishes the rest of the team luck. The Player and Partner go to Umbreon and Espeon who reveal they have completed the Magnagate and open it. The team steps onto the Magnagate to be transported to the dungeon that will lead them to the Great Glacier, but Emolga switches with Dunsparce at the last second before anyone can react and the team, minus Emolga, are teleported away. The Player's team arrive at the dungeon and though they are depressed that someone had to stay behind, they continue ahead and make it through the dungeon. The group emerges on the other side of the crevice that surrounds the Great Glacier and see the glacier in the distance. Umbreon and Espeon are delighted all their research paid off and the group goes to reach the glacier. After getting through another dungeon, the group discovers there is another chasm blocking the way to the glacier and are at a loss at how to cross it. The Player discovers a strange marking in the ground and realizes it was created by a Magnagate. Umbreon and Espeon confirm that a Magnagate was created a long time ago and discover someone created a Magnagate directly into the Great Glacier, and that they can do the same. Though confused about who created the previous Magnagate, they continue through the new Magnagate to reach the glacier in hopes of finding answers.

After exiting the Magnagate, the group discovers they are inside the Great Glacier, which is actually hollow and covered with a dome of ice. They also find a palace made of ice is the distance and go to explore it. As the group moves towards the ice palace, they discover it is becoming difficult to breathe as well several floating pieces of ice, providing evidence the great crystal said to be inside the Great Glacier may exist. The Partner also finds several crystals Espeon identifies as Frisms, rare treasures that can record messages spoken into them. As the group begins to collect a few Frisms as souvenirs, Virizion finds a Frism with a message already inside. The group plays the message, which was made from the person who previously explored the Glacier, who records their experience exploring the Glacier. Upon hearing the message, Virizion begins crying and she reveals the message was left from her former friend, Keldeo. Keldeo's message finishes with him stating he is going to explore further into the ice palace. Everyone is confused about why Keldeo wrote the letter to Virizion claiming he didn't go to the Great Glacier when he actually explored it. They decide to continue exploring in hope of finding the answer about Keldeo. While continuing their exploration, the group is ambushed by a pair of Cryogonal and a Golurk, but they defeat them. Afterward, a strange wind blows through, despite the area being inside a covered dome, but the group puts it aside and keeps moving. As the group continues toward the ice palace, everyone except the Player begins having trouble breathing and soon collapse. Suddenly, a Kyurem appears and whisks everyone away to a different location. Everyone awakens, able to breathe again, and Kyurem introduces himself as the master of the glacier. Kyurem explains that not even he can enter the place the group was heading to, and that he used his ability to see the future to save the group. He tells the group to leave, as there is no place left they can explore, and Umbreon gives his word the group will return home in exchange that Kyurem tells him if the Great Crystal of the glacier exists. Kyurem confirms the crystal is real, and that he doesn't know about Keldeo, as no one else made it as far into the glacier as the group did. He then flies off and leaves behind a treasure chest as a reward for the group's effort. The group becomes concerned about what became of Keldeo, but Virizion reveals she hasn't given up hope. She also admits the reason she became bitter and rejected the friendship of others was that she gave up on friendship after reading Keldeo's letter, but she now that she has learned to trust again thanks to the team, she has hope of finding Keldeo and learning the truth. Satisfied with what they accomplished and allowing Virizion to get closure, the group returns to Paradise, declaring their expedition a success.

After returning home in success, the Player and Partner decide to resume their normal activities. That morning, the two are subjected to a prank by Emolga who uses the Frisms the group brought back from the Glacier. After figuring out the prank, the two and Emolga catch up and Emolga reveals mysterious balls of light have been seen rising into the sky from great distances away. That night, the Player has a dream where they hear the voice of the being that summoned them to the Pokémon world, but they wake up before they can try and talk to them. The Player tells the Partner about the dream and the Partner determines, whoever is trying to contact the Player is slowly getting more clear and they might soon be able to fully communicate. They also determine the Player was brought to the Pokémon world for a purpose and that once that purpose is fulfilled, the Player will return to their world, causing the Player to wonder why they were brought to the Pokémon world. The next morning, Emolga alerts the two that the lights he mentions earlier have returned and brings them to the Post Town hill to see them. Despite the intrigue surrounding the lights, the citizens of Post Town are growing concerned about the unknown phenomenon and are considering it a bad omen.

That night, the Player has another dream where they finally meet the being who summoned them. The being introduces herself as Munna, the Pokémon that was being chased in the vision the Player first saw when they arrived in the Pokémon world, and reveals that Hydreigon, the Pokémon that was chasing her, is disrupting the balance of the Pokémon world and will eventually destroyed it. Unable to stop Hydreigon herself, she used her abilities to enter dreams to find help in the human world, resulting in the Player being summoned to the Pokémon world. However, Hydreigon discovered she was calling for help and began hunting her and forcing her to hide. The Player offers to help and Munna reveals she is at the base of Mount Kilionea, but is forced to end the dream when Hydreigon discovers her.

The next day, the Player tells everyone about Munna and their origins as a human. Everyone decides to believe the Player is telling the truth and discusses how to help Munna. It is decided to rescue Munna and bring her back to Paradise in order to figure out how to best stop Hydreigon and the Player and Partner volunteer to rescue her. Due to the distance of Mount Kilionea, Umbreon decides to create a Magnagate to get there fast and begins experimenting with Espeon to find the right combination of Entercards to create a dungeon that exits at Mount Kilionea. Once the Player and Partner are ready, Umbreon and Espeon open the Magnagate and the Player and Partner travel through its dungeon to Mount Kilionea. When the two reach the base of Mount Kilionea, they find it is nighttime and decide to camp out until morning. While sleeping, the Player meets Munna again in a dream. Munna reveals she has continued to elude Hydreigon, but she's stuck in her hiding spot. The dream is suddenly cut off and the Player awakes and tells the Partner about it. Fearing Munna is in danger, the two rush to where she said she was hiding. Upon arrival, the two carefully search for Munna and quickly find her. However, Munna's personality suddenly takes a dark change and she surrounds the two with a group of henchmen, including the Toxicroak and Purugly who hunted Espeon. The two are completely caught off guard by Munna's betrayal, but manage come up with a plan to escape. They attack Munna's Chandelure henchmen who are providing light, knocking them out and blinding Munna and her henchman with dark of the night, allowing them to escape. After running for a bit, the Player discovers they have become separated from the Partner during their escape and wonders why Munna was working with Purugly and Toxicroak to set a trap for them. However, Toxicroak begins catching up to the Player, forcing them to keep running. When the Player reaches a dead end, they are ambushed by Toxicroak and a pair of Munna's minions. The Player manages to defeat them, but Toxicroak calls for backup and a pair of Excadrill and a Salamence arrive to attack the exhausted Player. Before Salamence can attack the Player, he is attacked by Hydreigon who helps the Player escape.

The Player later awakens with Hydreigon who claims to be their ally. Seeing that Hydreigon's polite and gentle personality contradicts what Munna told them, the Player wonders what's going on. Hydreigon reveals he was actually the voice the Player heard before becoming a Pokémon and that Munna interrupted him, sent the Player a false vision to trick them into thinking he was the bad guy, and continuously interfered to make sure they could never meet. Before Hydreigon can explain why he brought the Player to the human world and why Munna is trying to get rid of them, the two her Salamence roaring and are forced to run to avoid being caught. After getting to a safe distance, the two rest for the night and Hydreigon finally reveals the reason he brought the Player to the Pokémon world: to destroy the Bittercold. Hydreigon reveals he is not a Pokémon, but the Voice of Life, the essence of nature, in the form of a Pokémon. He also reveals the Pokémon world is in danger of being destroyed by the Bittercold: a mysterious entity that is going drive the world to ruin. The Bittercold is the actually the Great Crystal of the Great Glacier, evidenced by its power to make objects float. Kyurem guards the Bittercold, using his ability to see the future to thwart all who could stop the Bittercold to protect the future that he has seen. Munna and her henchmen all work for Kyurem to ensure the world is destroyed. The Voice of Life objected to the world being destroyed and took the form of Hydreigon to stop it. However, the Bittercold is a physical manifestation of negative feelings, and dense fog made of that negativity surrounds it and effects Pokémon so much that they can't even breathe; explaining why the Player's team passed out during the exploration of the Great Glacier. Since Pokémon can't get near the Bittercold, Hydreigon turned to humans, which are unaffected by the fog of negativity surrounding the Bittercold. He sent out his plea through the dreams of humans and brought several of them to the Pokémon world, including the Player. Despite many humans being summoned to the Pokémon world, they were hunted by Kyurem and Munna and sent back to the Human world. The Player decides to help stop the Bittercold and save the Pokémon world. Munna and her gang spring their trap and surround the Player.

The next day, the Player and Hydreigon head toward Post Town to get Umbreon and Espeon's help in returning to the Great Glacier. After crossing a savanna, the two are ambushed by Purugly and a few Excadrill, who reveal Snivy has been taken captive by them in the Holehills. Despite objects about trusting any message Munna's gang says, the Player decides to go save the Partner. The two travel to the Holehills, a valley filled with caves and holes to find the Partner, aware they are walking into a trap. While searching the Holehills, the two find a Frism with a message from the Partner recording a conversation with Munna, confirming they were really captured. When the two reach the top of the Holehills, they see Munna and her gang guarding a cave where the Partner is being held prisoner. The Player knocks out Toxicroak, who was guarding the Partner's prison, but discovers the Partner has been moved and a Frism was used to replay their voice to further trick the Player. However, Hydreigon launches a surprise attack from the air, giving the Player time to find and rescue the Partner. The two make a narrow escape with Hydreigon's help and flee to safety.

When Hydreigon lands to rest, he reveals the Player saw through Munna's trap when they noticed the first Frism wasn't the one that belonged to the Partner. The Partner is formally introduced to Hydreigon and brought up to speed on the situation. The three decide to continue heading back to Post Town to get Umbreon and Espeon's help. While making their way across a desert to return to Post-Town, the group are ambushed by Kyurem who destroys Hydreigon and viciously attacks the Player. The Partner, unable to bear watching the Player be brutalized by Kyruem, begs Kyurem to stop and Kyurem spares them determining the two have lost the will to try and change the future he sees. The Partner asks Kyurem why he wants to let the world be destroyed and Kyurem reveals the world will be destroyed in only a few days and that because the Pokémon of the world have grown selfish and distrustful, their negative feelings spawned the Bittercold. Kyurem claims that once Bittercold destroys the world, a new one will be born in its place, and that is why is wants the world to be destroyed. He also reveals that the rising lights seen from Post-Town were actually humans Hydreigon summoned that were sent back to the human world and that all but the Player have been defeated. Kyurem leaves after warning that he will not show the same mercy if the Player keeps trying to save the world. The Partner discovers the Player is greatly injured, but fortunately, they are found by Emnolga and Dunsparce, who help bring the Player to safety.

The Player awakens surrounded by their teammates near a spring and the Partner asks how they knew where to find them. The others explain they decided to search for the two after they didn't come back to Post-Town right away when an unknown voice told them to go to the desert to find, where a trail of sparkling light led them to the pair. The Player and Partner realize that the light must have been Hydreigon's essence, the Voice of Life, and Espeon determines that even though its physical form was destroyed, its essence still exists and still wishes to protect this world. However, Umbreon begins to wonder if destroying the Bittercold will matter, if the strife among Pokémon that created it will still exist and recreate it. The group becomes depressed about what to do if they can't solve the source of the problem, but the Partner doesn't want to give up and wants to protect the world and erase the strife that has plagued it with the help of the team. The Partner's plea moves the rest of the team and they realize that if they can still be friends in the current world, the negativity in others can be replaced with faith, and those feelings can change the future of destruction. Everyone decides to return to Post-Town, start spreading the message, and find a way to destroy the Bittercold.

The day after returning to Paradise, the Partner holds a town meeting and reveals the danger the world is in. However, the citizens of Post Town grow depressed at the news and doubt they can stop Kyurem and the Bittercold. Suddenly, an earthquake goes off and everyone discovers it is coming from the Great Glacier, where the Glacier Palace is floating through the air. The Partner guesses the Bittercold's power to make objects levitate has grown strong enough to lift the entire Glacier Palace that houses it, setting the stage to destroy the world in a few days. The citizens flee in panic except for Swanna, who gives the Player and Partner her support and faith. That night, the team ponders what to do since the citizens didn't respond as hoped. Vizirion realizes the negativity that has become ingrained in the Pokémon of the world is keeping the citizens from even trying to stop the end of the world. Just as the group is feeling their lowest, Lillipup arrives and apologizes for running off in fear. Lillipup doesn't want the world to disappear and wants to help saving it, lifting the groups spirits. They also discover the citizens they've helped in the past have also come and offer to help restore the faith in the other citizens and try to fight against the Bittercold. The Partner is delighted by the news, but realizes that they don't have a way to get to the floating Glacier Palace. Umbreon and Espeon offer to go ahead and find a way to the Glacier Palace using their Entercards, leaving behind the Entercards used to previously travel to the Great Glacier. After Umbreon and Espeon leave, Dunsparce declares he will stay behind and help restore the faith for the future in the citizens and the others prepare for the fight to come.

The next day, the Partner opens the Magnagate and the group, minus Dunsparce, travels through it. After emerging from the Magnagate's dungeon, the group exits in the crevices surrounding the Great Glacier. Suddenly, the Glacier Palace floats over the area and the group realizes it's already begun moving. Salamence flies down from the Glacier Palace to attack the group along with a few of Munna's Chandelure henchmen. After the attackers are defeated, one of them gets back up to try and ambush Emolga, but Espeon arrives and knocks it out before it can attack. Espeon reveals she and Umbreon found a way to get to the Glacier Palace. The group rendezvous with Umbreon, who has special Entercards that will take them directly to the Glacier Palace without creating a Dungeon. However, Umbreon didn't create the Entercards, but found them by chance from shards of ice that fell from the Glacier Palace and suspects they came from the same individual who created the Magnagate remains from the first visit to the Great Glacier, whom Umbreon suspects to be Keldeo: the only other known Pokémon to reach the Great Glacier. Umbreon also suspects that Keldeo is inside the Glacier Palace, but despite the many unanswered questions, the groups uses the Magnagate to travel to Glacier Palace. Back at Post-Town, the citizens discover the Glacier Palace is moving closer and begin to panic, but Dunsparce and Swanna calm them down and place their hopes on the team.

When the team arrives on the floating Glacier Palace, they plan to the split into three teams to avoid Munna and her gang and plan to return to the ground using the Entercars after the Bittercold is destroyed. While Umbreon and Espeon travel deeper into the palace, Espeon questions Umbreon why he told the others they could use the Entercards to return to the ground when they aren't sure if it will actually work. Umbreon admits there is a chance the Entercards could bring them back, but it's not for certain and he didn't want the others to be afraid of what might happen if they can't come back. The two vow to make sure the team can come back to Paradise after the Bittercold is destroyed. While Virizion and Emolga travel deeper into the Palace, the two make amends for the animosity between them that formed when Virizion rejected Dunsparce and officially become friends. When the two reach an open area, they are ambushed by Purugly and six Excadrill. Fortunately, the Player and Partner catch up and help Virizion and Emolga fight off Purugly and her henchman Once their enemies are knocked out, the four leave before they can get up and attack again. Meanwhile, Kyurem observes that the Glacier palace is heading south at an increasing pace and the Bittercold is getting stronger, too the point it will soon destroy the world. Munna is delighted by the news that the world will end, but Toxicroak reveals the Player's team have infiltrated the Glacier Palace and Munna decides to prepare a trap.

When Virizion, Emolga, the Partner, and the Player reach the next area of the Glacier Palace, they decide to stick together to avoid being caught alone in another ambush. Meanwhile, Umbreon and Espeon make their way through the enemies inhabiting the Glacier Palace and find a tower of ice running with electricity. Umbreon deduces the tower holds some kind of secret and the two break through to the inside. There, they find several Entercards littering the ground along with an injured Pokémon who turns out to be Keldeo. As the Player's group keeps moving, they are ambushed by Munna, Toxicroak, and several minions. Munna asks the group why they want to save the world, revealing she believes the world is not worth saving since it's become so cold and cruel, before attacking. After Munna's group is defeated, the group feels the Glacier Palace shake and decide to keep moving, but Munna refuses to give up despite her injuries. The Partner asks Munna why she is so desperate to let the world be destroyed and she reveals she and her gang were all betrayed by those around them and left with nothing. Munna and her gang understood the pain the others had felt and teamed up with Kyurem to destroy the world that made them fell despair. The Partner asks Munna if she really so close to her friends, then why is she letting them perish along with the world instead of trying to find happiness with them. Munna becomes rattled by the Player's question and states they can't be happy in the world that caused such misery and the only way for her friends to escape it was to disappear together with the end of the world When Munna and her gang try to attack again, Umbreon, Espeon, and Keldeo arrive through a Magnagate and intervene and Keldeo's presence shocks everyone. Espeon explains that Keldeo was being held prisoner in the Glacier Palace all along and Munna reveals that when he first came to the Glacier Palace and found the Bittercold he was pursued by Kyurem and her gang until he let himself be caught to try and change Munna and her gang to abandon their plan. Munna defends her decision to let the world end, but Keldeo believes the Player's earlier words have placed doubts in her. She continues stating that there is nothing in the world worth protecting, but the Partner denies this by stating that her friends are worth protecting and are a reason to keep living. Munna's gang's resolve begins to shake as the Partner tells them that if they keep living, they can make the world worth living in again and they will make it so. Suddenly, the largest tremor yet goes off and causes a large ice structure to collapse down on the Player and Partner. When the collapse is over, the Player and Partner discover Munna, having a change of heart, pushed them to safety and she begs them to save the world along with Keldeo, Munna's gang, and the team. The Partner vows to save the world and they and the Player go to find and destroy the Bittercold. After the two leave, everyone becomes concerned about Munna and Keldeo's injuries. When Virizion worries about Keldeo, he apologizes for writing the letter that broke off their friendship and explains he wrote it when he was being pursued by Kyruem and Munna's gang so Virizion wouldn't be put in the same danger he was in. Virizion also apologizes for not having faith in Keldeo and breaks down into tears and the two become friends again.

When the Player and Partner reach the final part of the Glacier Palace, the Partner begins to have trouble breathing because of the closing proximity to the Bittercold. The Partner manages to push through their breathing troubles and the two move on to find the Bittercold. When they finally reach the top, the Partner begins to feel more of the Bittercold's power. Before they can enter the chamber where the Bittercold lies, Kyurem appears and refuses to let them by without a fight. Despite Kyurems warning about not holding back again and that the future he's seen cannot be changed, the two vow to defeat him and change the future he sees. After a hard battle, Kyurem is defeated, but even after seeing their strength of their beliefs, he still believes that the world is doomed. However, he admits he would like to see if the two can actually change the future he has foreseen and tells them to prove they can save the world. The Player and Partner travel into the chamber and find the Bittercold. The Bittercold's power becomes too much for the Partner to take and they collapse. Kyurem explains the Bittercold feeds on a wind made from the negativity of the world's Pokémon called the Winds of Despair that give it is's power and make it hard for Pokémon to breathe. The Partner is unable to get up, but they tell the Player to destroy the Bittercold. However, the Winds of Despair begin to affect the Player since they are so close and the Player is unable to push through them to reach the Bittercold. Suddenly, the Player begins hearing voices telling them not to give up from the Partner, the Pokémon of Post Town, the Team, and even Munna's gang. The positive power of the belief and hope in the Player weakens the Winds of Despair and the Bittercold itself. With their strength renewed, the Player attacks the Bittercold, but they can't damage it at all. When the Player's begins to doubt how they can destroy the Bittercold, the Winds of Despair return and the Bittercold grows even stronger. The Pokémon of Post-Town seeing the Bittercold's power spreading above the Glacier Palace and begin to worry, despite Dunsparce's urges them to stay strong and keep having faith. The Partner keeps encouraging the Player to continue the fight and the Player launches a desperate attack with all of their strength. Player's attack cracks open the Bittercold's front, causing it's power to waver for a moment. When the Bittercold's power disappears for a second, the Pokémon of Post-Town see the rainbows of hope for a second before it is covered up by the Bittercold's power again. The return of the rainbows gives the Pokémon hope and courage to keep believing in the Player. The Player hears their hopes battles the Bittercold again and with its weak point exposed, finally destroys it. With the Bittercold's destroyed, the rainbows of hope fully return even brighter than before they disappeared. Without the Bittercold, the Glacier Palace begins to crumble and fall apart as it crashes to the ground.

The Player and Partner wake up in a strange space and Kyurem appears and tells them that they are inside a dream in their consciousness. Kyurem admits the pair's actions have proven the future can be changed and the world can still be put on the right path, giving them his gratitude and thanks before the pair wake up in the crossroads outside of Post-Town. They are soon found by their friends, who don't know how they were rescued from the collapsing Glacier Palace. The Player guesses they were all saved by Kyurem, including Munna's gang, as an act of gratitude. The group is found by Dunsparce who shows them the returned rainbows of hope. Hydreigon returns after restoring his physical form and thanks the group for saving the world and they are joined by the Pokémon of Post-Town and a massive party is thrown to celebrate that night. The Player eventuall takes a break from the party and goes to stargazing on the town hill. Hydreigon appears again and gives his thanks to the Player again, but reveals that a human presence in the Pokémon world will cause a dangerous distortion in the fabric of the universe. In order to prevent that, Hydreigon sorrowfully reveals the Player will be sent back to the human world tomorrow, to the Player's regret. In addition, all the memories of the Player will disappear when they return to the human world. The Player is unable to tell the others about what will happen and keeps the news to himself.

The next morning, the Player leaves early while the Partner is still asleep and sorrowfully return to the hill. Hydreigon appears and takes the Player toward the human world in a ball of light. As the Player floats into the sky to return to the human world, they ask Hydreigon to take them over paradise and Hydreigon is glad to agree. The Player sees the Partner going about the day with the rest of their friends, but they all suddenly start looking at the Player as the float away. When Hydreigon is unable to travel with the Player and further, he once again gives them his thanks and a Frism from the Partner. Hydreigon reveals the Partner asked Hydreigon to give their Frism to the Player if they ever returned to the human world before leaving. The Player hears the message left by the Partner and the Partner understands that the Player has to return to their world and that they will see them off with a smile and promises never to forget them when they return hoe. The message also records farewells from the their other friends who also promise not to forget them, even if they have to defy fate to do so. The Player thinks back to when they saw their friends notice them float way and realizes that they have not forgotten them, to the Player's tearful joy. The sphere of light slowly makes its way to the human world as the credits roll.

After the credits end, the Partner wishes them goodbye and promises they will still be there in spirit forever as the game ends.

Post-Game[]

Months after the Bittercold was destroyed, peace returned to the Pokémon world and the Partner spends their time at Paradise with their team, but the Partner still deeply misses the Player since the memory of them still remains even though they were supposed to be removed when the Player returned to the human world. Also, Keldeo and Hydreigon have joined the Partner's team. That night, Emolga and Dunsparce have dinner with Hydreigon while Keldeo and Virizion talk on the hillside and Keldeo admits he joined the team because he was inspired by the Partner's conviction when they convinced Munna and her gang the world was still worth fighting for. They also discuss how the Partner is still mourning the Player's absence and their renewed friendship.

The next day, Dunsparce meets with Hydreigon and asks him for a favor. Later, Emolga asks the Partner to keep an eye out for Hydreigon because he, Emolga, and Dunsparce agreed meet so they could pay the tab for meal at Swanna's, but Hydreigon is nowhere to be found. The following morning, the Partner meets with Emolga, who still hasn't found Hydreigon. Hydreigon suddenly reappears and apologizes for forgetting about paying the tab, having forgotten about it during an errand. He then asks the Player to gather the whole team at Swanna's Inn after he pays the bill. At the meeting, Hydreigon reveals there might be a way for the Player to return to the Pokémon World, which is what Dunsparce asked him to look into. He admits that he thought the Player's presence would cause a distortion in the world due to the laws of nature of the Pokémon world, but he discovered those have begun laws changing ever since the team defied them by remember the Player when they were supposed to forget them. This revelation made Hydreigon suspect there may be a way for the Player to return and after gathering information, he discovered a way for the Player to return. He explains that inside a dungeon called Worldcore, there is a place called the Hill of Universal Order where a wish can be made and if the wish has a strong desire behind it and does not upset the balance of universe, it will be granted. However, only one member of the team can go, and everyone nominates the Partner, but the Partner is conflicted about going since it would mean bringing the Player away from their loved ones in the human world. Hydreigon offers a solution by suggesting that the Partner wish the Player could freely between worlds and reveals Dunsparce asked him about bringing back the Player so the Partner wouldn't be depressed anymore. The team encourages the Partner to go make the wish for and the Partner is motivated to go to the Worldcore. Hydreigon goes ahead to meet the Partner at the Hill of Universal Order and the Partner sets out for the Worldcore.

When the Partner reaches the Hill of Universal Order, they meet up with Hydreigon who encourages them to make their wish. The Partner makes their wish for the Player to travel freely between the human and Pokémon worlds and the hill begins to respond, but it appears as if the strain of the wish was too much for the laws of nature to withstand and Hydreigon reveals the hill is starting to collapse along with the entire cavern for a very long time. Despite the danger, the Partner refuses to abandon their wish and Hydreigon reveals he has been sensing the Player watching them from the human world and asks them to wish alongside the Partner. The Player and Partner's wish together becomes strong enough to grant and the Player returns to the Pokémon world and reunites with the Partner.
