Foongus (Japanese: タマゲタケ, HepburnTamagetake) (FOON-gus[1]) is a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Foongus is a small Pokémon that resembles a mushroom. The pattern at top of the mushroom resembles a Poké Ball. It has a white stem with stubby arms sprouting from it. On its stem is its tiny face, with small, black eyes and a mouth with large, pink lips.

Behavior[]

Foongus use the Poké Ball-like patterns on their heads to lure people and Pokémon in grassy areas, then release a cloud of poisonous spores to defend itself. They move by either hopping or turning on their sides and rolling on their caps.

Natural abilities[]

Foongus's spores have poisonous properties that can immobilize their foes. They can also be used as a stomach medicine if thoroughly dried.

Evolution[]

Foongus evolves into Amoonguss at level 39.

Trivia[]

  • Foongus is the fourth Pokémon to resemble a Poké Ball, the others being Voltorb, Electrode, and its evolved form Amoonguss. However, unlike the others, it only has a Poké Ball design on it, instead of being in the shape of one.
  • Like the Voltorb line, Foongus will sometimes show up as an item ball, symbolized as a Poké Ball, in the grass; once interacted with, the "Poké Ball" will attack the player.
  • When a Foongus is mistakenly touched due to its item-like appearance on the screen, it shows a Poké Ball jump up a short length and then come down, causing a small puff of dust.
  • At level 39, Foongus has the highest evolution level out of all mushroom Pokémon.

Origin[]

Foongus appears to be based on a mushroom disguised as a Poké Ball. It may take after the mimic-type enemy archetype in RPGs, similar to Voltorb.

Etymology[]

Foongus comes from fool (to trick someone) and fungus. Paired with the name of Amoonguss, it sounds similar to the phrase "Fungus among us".
