+
The is one of the eighteen Pokémon elemental types.

  +
The Fairy type was introduced in Generation VI to balance the Dragon and Dark types. It is super-effective against both types and also resisted most types that were introduced in the past Generation (mostly Bug, Fighting, and Dark types). Another reason why the Fairy type was introduced was to give offensive advantages to the Steel and Poison types. Prior to Generation VI, the Dark/Ghost-type Sableye and Spiritomb had no weaknesses, so the Fairy type was added to give them a weakness.
Fairy-Type Pokémon are strong against the Dragon-type.

  +
Fairy-type Pokémon are generally considered "cute" and "elegant" and tend to be at least partially pink in color and feminine in appearance overall (Pokémon such as Igglybuff and Swirlix have these traits). However, Fairy types can be incredibly powerful. Fairy-types also have some magical appeal to them. As opposed to Psychic-type Pokémon, Fairy-type Pokémon have powers related to magic and the supernatural as opposed to mental power. Fairy types are also known for their powers of purity and rejuvenation (Pokémon such as Gardevoir, Xerneas, and Galarian Weezing are shown to have special powers that can purify objects). Other Fairy types with non-psychic powers are still given the Fairy type for certain magical abilities (Jigglypuff can put people to sleep by singing and the Guardian Deities are seen as gods). They could also be based on other types of powers, have mysterious origins, or be based on folktale creatures (Pokémon such as Clefairy, which come from the moon, and Diancie, which is a mutated form of Carbink). Many Fairy types are also known for their almost sweet nature, metaphorically and literally (for example, Pokémon like Spritzee, Slurpuff & Flabébé are based on sweet-smelling things like perfume, candy, and flowers respectively). However, others are more dangerous and tricky (such as Mawile and its huge jaws; Impidimp, which feeds off emotions of frustrated people; or Shiinotic, who lures prey with lights), which are more befitting of fairies seen in folklore as opposed to popular culture.

Relations with other types
  +
*They're strong against the Dragon type because in certain mythologies, fairies' magic could dominate oriental dragons, even though dragons were immune to magic in European legends.
  +
*They're strong against the Dark type because fairies represent light and heroism, which almost always win against evil.
  +
*They're strong against the Fighting type because physical strength is virtually useless against magic, especially when a magical being can just put a spell on physical fighters.
  +
*They're weak against the Steel type because according to European legends and traditions, fairies could be killed with iron due to it being man-made and manufactured, which is opposite to the natural affinity of fairies. Also, in some stories, fairies could not touch steel because it burned them when touched. Alternatively, it could be due to Clarke's Law: "Any sufficiently-advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
  +
*They're weak against the Poison type because fairies have weak immune systems, and therefore represent purity while poison can represent pollution. Also, in some stories, villains gave fairies poison to weaken them.
  +
*The Fire type resists them because traditionally, fairies live in forests, which fire can easily destroy. However Fairy types are neutral to the Fire type.
  +
  +
Trivia
  +
*The Fairy-type is the only type to not have a Pokémon with gender differences in it.
  +
*Play Rough, Spirit Break, and Magical Torque are the only standard physical Fairy-type moves.
  +
*Prior to Generation IX, no Pokémon with the Protean Ability can become Fairy type due to the lack of Fairy-type moves that Greninja or Kecleon can learn.
  +
*Bede is the first male trainer that specializes in Fairy-type Pokémon, with second being Ortega.
  +
**However, Bede was initially a Psychic-type trainer instead.
  +
*Lacey is the first Elite Four member to specialize in Fairy-types.
  +
*Strangely, the Fairy type is neutral against the Grass type instead of being not very effective or ineffective against it, despite the fact that most fairies have a bond with nature and would never dare to hurt fungi/plant life — similarly, fairy rings are a nonfiction concept. Many fairies also live in forests, wear plant-based clothes like garlands, and sit on toadstools/mushrooms, strengthening the connection.
  +
*Fairy type, Electric type, and Ground type were the last three types to receive Fighting type (with Iron Valiant for Fairy type; with Pawmo, Pawmot, and Iron Hands for Electric type; with Great Tusk for Ground type) in Generation IX.
  +
*As of Generation IX, the only types that haven't been paired with the Fairy-type are the Fire-type and the Ground-type.
  +
**In addition, the Steel-type is weak to both while the Water-type is strong to both.

Type Fairy HOME
Fairy type artwork

Fairy vs. Dragon artwork by Ken Sugimori.

The Fairy type (Japanese: フェアリータイプ, HepburnFearii taipu) is one of the eighteen Pokémon elemental types.

The known famous Fairy-type Pokémon Trainers are Valerie, the sixth Gym Leader of the Kalos region; Mina, the Fairy-type Trial Captain of the Alola region; Opal, the fifth Gym Leader of the Galar region; Bede, Opal's successor (he was previously Psychic-type trainer); Ortega, the boss of Team Star's Ruchbah Squad; and Lacey, a member of BB League Elite Four.

Pokémon with Fairy-type alternate forms

The following alternate forms of some Pokémon are also of the Fairy type.

Relations with other types

  • They're strong against the Dragon type because in certain mythologies, fairies' magic could dominate oriental dragons, even though dragons were immune to magic in European legends.
  • They're strong against the Dark type because fairies represent light and heroism, which almost always win against evil.
  • They're strong against the Fighting type because physical strength is virtually useless against magic, especially when a magical being can just put a spell on physical fighters.
  • They're weak against the Steel type because according to European legends and traditions, fairies could be killed with iron due to it being man-made and manufactured, which is opposite to the natural affinity of fairies. Also, in some stories, fairies could not touch steel because it burned them when touched. Alternatively, it could be due to Clarke's Law: "Any sufficiently-advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
  • They're weak against the Poison type because fairies have weak immune systems, and therefore represent purity while poison can represent pollution. Also, in some stories, villains gave fairies poison to weaken them.
  • The Fire type resists them because traditionally, fairies live in forests, which fire can easily destroy. However Fairy types are neutral to the Fire type.

Trivia

  • The Fairy-type is the only type to not have a Pokémon with gender differences in it.
  • Play Rough, Spirit Break, and Magical Torque are the only standard physical Fairy-type moves.
  • Prior to Generation IX, no Pokémon with the Protean Ability can become Fairy type due to the lack of Fairy-type moves that Greninja or Kecleon can learn.
  • Bede is the first male trainer that specializes in Fairy-type Pokémon, with second being Ortega.
    • However, Bede was initially a Psychic-type trainer instead.
  • Lacey is the first Elite Four member to specialize in Fairy-types.
  • Strangely, the Fairy type is neutral against the Grass type instead of being not very effective or ineffective against it, despite the fact that most fairies have a bond with nature and would never dare to hurt fungi/plant life — similarly, fairy rings are a nonfiction concept. Many fairies also live in forests, wear plant-based clothes like garlands, and sit on toadstools/mushrooms, strengthening the connection.
  • Fairy type, Electric type, and Ground type were the last three types to receive Fighting type (with Iron Valiant for Fairy type; with Pawmo, Pawmot, and Iron Hands for Electric type; with Great Tusk for Ground type) in Generation IX.
  • As of Generation IX, the only types that haven't been paired with the Fairy-type are the Fire-type and the Ground-type.
    • In addition, the Steel-type is weak to both while the Water-type is strong to both.
