__NOEDITSECTION__

Evolution Stones (commonly known as Elemental Stones) are crystals with the power of a certain element that instantly evolve certain Pokémon they are used on. There are currently nine different stones for evolving Pokémon.

*Fire, Water, and Thunder Stones evolve Pokémon of the corresponding Pokémon types, for example Vulpix, Staryu, and Pikachu, respectively.

*The Moon Stone evolves fairy-like Pokémon, like Clefairy, Nidorino, and Nidorina.

*Leaf Stones evolve Grass-types, such as Exeggcute and Weepinbell.

*The Sun Stone, introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, evolves the plant Pokémon Sunkern, Petilil and Gloom.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl added Shiny, Dusk, and Dawn Stones:

*Shiny Stones are used to evolve Togetic and Roselia.

*Dusk Stones are used to evolve Murkrow and Misdreavus.

*Dawn Stones are used to evolve female Snorunt and male Kirlia.

  +
List of Evolutionary Stones
There are a handful of other stones related to evolution.

  +
Water Stone
*The Everstone prevents the Pokémon that holds it from evolving.

  +

*The Sun Shard and Moon Shard (found in Pokémon XD only) simulate the effects of Day and Night, which allows a happy Eevee to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon.

  +
A Water Stone is a special elemental stone introduced in Generation I. It is an elliptical-shaped stone that is blue in appearance, with a bubble insignia inside of it. It evolves:
*When a Slowpoke or Poliwhirl holds the King's Rock and is traded, it will evolve into Slowking or Politoed, respectively.

*Out of all Pokémon who can evolve via evolutionary stones (Alolan Forms counted as individual species), only 4 of them (Poliwhirl, Eevee, Kirlia, Snorunt) can evolve in other ways.
  +
*So far, Generation VII and Generation VIII are the only Generations where no new Pokémon evolve via evolutionary stones (excluding Regional Forms of existing Pokémon).
  +
**However, Generation VIII is the first Generation to change a Pokémon's evolution method to evolutionary stones, as the removal of Moss Rocks, Ice Rocks and special magnetic fields caused several Pokémon to require specific stones instead.
  +
*The Water, Leaf, and Moon Stones evolves the most variety of Pokémon, each tying with six different Pokémon needing them to evolve.
  +
*There are stones called sunstones and moonstones in real life. However, they look different from the evolutionary stones.
  +
*The evolved forms tend to have dramatically different level-up learnsets, with the majority of these learning no new moves at all, such as Togekiss and Roserade. A notable exception is Sunflora, which has a roughly identical level-up learnset as Sunkern.
  +
*During the development of the Generation II games there was going to be a new stone called the Poison Stone which was the beta form to evolve Eevee into Umbreon (Umbreon was going to be poison type during the development) and Weepinbell into a new form (which was later discarded) but the poison stone was discarded in the final games for unknown reasons.
  +
*There are a handful of other stones related to evolution:
  +
**An Everstone prevents the Pokémon that holds it from evolving.
  +
**The Sun Shard and Moon Shard (found in Pokémon XD only) simulate the effects of Day and Night, which allows a happy Eevee to evolve into Espeon or Umbreon.
  +
**When a Slowpoke or Poliwhirl holds the King's Rock and is traded, it will evolve into Slowking or Politoed, respectively.
  +
**When a Happiny holds an Oval Stone and levels up, it will evolve into Chansey.
  +
**When a specific Mega Stone is held by the Pokémon and a Key Stone is owned by the Trainer, certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve.

The player can evolve Pokémon in the Tree of Life after beating the game, by talking to Xerneas. Although the only requirement of evolving is to achieve a certain level, some connected Pokémon are unevolvable.

Trivia

  • Out of all Pokémon who can evolve via evolutionary stones (Alolan Forms counted as individual species), only 2 of them (Eevee and Gloom) can use over 1 kind.
  • Out of all Pokémon who can evolve via evolutionary stones (Alolan Forms counted as individual species), only 4 of them (Poliwhirl, Eevee, Kirlia, Snorunt) can evolve in other ways.
  • So far, Generation VII and Generation VIII are the only Generations where no new Pokémon evolve via evolutionary stones (excluding Regional Forms of existing Pokémon).
    • However, Generation VIII is the first Generation to change a Pokémon's evolution method to evolutionary stones, as the removal of Moss Rocks, Ice Rocks and special magnetic fields caused several Pokémon to require specific stones instead.
  • The Water, Leaf, and Moon Stones evolves the most variety of Pokémon, each tying with six different Pokémon needing them to evolve.
  • There are stones called sunstones and moonstones in real life. However, they look different from the evolutionary stones.
  • The evolved forms tend to have dramatically different level-up learnsets, with the majority of these learning no new moves at all, such as Togekiss and Roserade. A notable exception is Sunflora, which has a roughly identical level-up learnset as Sunkern.
  • During the development of the Generation II games there was going to be a new stone called the Poison Stone which was the beta form to evolve Eevee into Umbreon (Umbreon was going to be poison type during the development) and Weepinbell into a new form (which was later discarded) but the poison stone was discarded in the final games for unknown reasons.
  • There are a handful of other stones related to evolution:
