Ash, a 10-year old boy, begins his journey. On his first day, Ash accidentally woke up too late and came to Professor Oak's lab. To let the new trainer start his journey properly, Professor Oak gives Ash a Pikachu, who disobeys his trainer. However, Ash saves Pikachu from a flock of Spearow and Pikachu gained trust and respect for his trainer. Soon after, Ash is accompanied by Misty, Cerulean City's Gym Leader, aspiring to become a Water Pokémon Master and Brock, Pewter City's Gym Leader, wanting to become a Pokémon Breeder. Traveling through Kanto, the heroes meet the Gym Leaders - Lt. Surge, Erika, Sabrina, Koga and Blaine - which Ash has to defeat to obtain the Gym Badges to participate in the Indigo League. However, at times, they encounter Gary, who constantly annoys and belittles Ash at every turn. In addition, Team Rocket Trio, who are Jessie, James and Meowth, after being defeated by Ash's Pikachu, start to follow the heroes (calling them as twerps) and try to steal their Pokémon at every turn. After the victory in the Viridian City's Gym, Ash heads to the League and meets Ritchie, a fellow rival, which he has to battle eventually. Ritchie defeats Ash, but despite the loss, Ash retains his spirit, wanting to continue on his journey to become a Pokémon Master. Just then, Ash is sent by Professor Oak to the Orange Islands to deliver a GS Ball. Just before going to the Orange Islands, Ash releases his Pidgeot to protect a flock of Pidgey from being attacked.

The season is consisted of 81 episodes, from "Pokémon - I Choose You!" to "Pallet Party Panic", with the additional movie special, "Pokémon The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back".

Ash, Brock and Misty arrive to the Orange Islands (after a dangerous blimp flight) and meet Professor Ivy, whom Ash gives the GS Ball to. Brock decides to stay and do chores for Professor Ivy, letting Ash and Misty go alone through the islands. After being tricked by Team Rocket, Ash and Misty land on another island, where they meet a Pokémon Observer named Tracey, who joins them. Ash also calms down and befriends a Lapras, who was separated from its parents. The heroes travel by the islands. On four islands, Ash has to face the Gym Leaders and obtain their shells, in order to participate in the Orange League. After defeating Luana, Danny, Rudy and Cissy, Ash faces Drake, the Champion, and has a battle with him. After the intense battle, Ash manages to win and is recorded into the Hall of Fame. The heroes return to Pallet Town, where Brock has been living for weeks (due to having run off from Professor Ivy). Tracey decides to be Professor Oak's assistant, while Ash, Brock and Misty continue towards Johto, a region where Gary has went to, for they have to send the GS Ball to Kurt in one of the towns.

The season is consisted of 36 episodes, from "A Scare in the Air" to "The Rivalry Revival", with the additional movie special, "Pokémon The Movie 2000 - The Power of One".
