As for the Electrode that can be captured inside the Rocket Hideout, it is possible they are remebering the treatment it endured while enslaved by Team Rocket.

Although Electrode resembles an upside-down PokéBall, it is based on a bomb or landmine. It might also draw inspiration from the phenomenon of ball lightning, as it is known to drift through the atmosphere and explode when it is full of electricity.
*Despite having the option of capturing the Electrode in the Rocket Hideout, [[Lance]] only suggests battling and defeating them in order to stop the machine, despite the fact that capturing them would be more humane. Though his decision to not capture the one's he fights may be due to his specializing in Dragon pokemon, it seems an unlikely reason, due to the fact he could simply release them afterword. Another more likely possibility, is Lance had no Pokeballs with to capture them with at the time and was unaware if the player had any on them at the time. It is also possible that Lance was testing the player, by not mentioning they could capture them, possibly wanting to see how they would deal with the situation.

Trivia

  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver, if the player has Electrode traveling alongside them, if they talk to it inside the Rocket Hideout one may receive a message say "Electrode is trembling" possibly indicating it is either scared or agitated being there likely due to Team Rocket's using Electrode to power their machine.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Electrode is an assistant Pokémon, blowing up and causing massive damage; however it does damage to both you and your opponent.

Origin

Although Electrode resembles an upside-down PokéBall, it is based on a bomb or landmine. It might also draw inspiration from the phenomenon of ball lightning, as it is known to drift through the atmosphere and explode when it is full of electricity.

Etymology

Electrode's name appears to come from the actual word "electrode", which is a conductor through which electricity enters or leaves. It might also be a combination of "electric" and "explode".
