Edward, also known as Ed the Thinker, is a character appearing in Guardian Signs, who is the leader of the Societea and Pokémon Pinchers.

Appearance[]

Edward is an elderly man which is shown through his greying hair. Before he reveals himself to be the Societea's leader, he is always seen wearing his doctor's uniform.

Personality[]

At first glance, Edward is a friendly doctor seeking to help anyone who requires his services. He is shown to be quite close to several elderly people, later to be revealed the rest of the Societea. When his true nature is revealed, he is shown to be manipulative, power hungry, and ruthless to the point of destroying an island and almost killing the Pokémon who lived on it. However, he admits his doctor persona was a real part of him, if only to balance out the evil things he's done with his life. Above all, Edward admitted he despised his retirement and his motivation for everything he did was to avoid being old and decrepit.

Biography[]

He is first met during the player character's first visit to Renbow Island and is encountered several more times throughout the main story. When Purple-Eyes fails to awake Zapdos, the final legendary bird needed to summon the Sky Fortress, Ed (with his face hidden in his hovering machine) arrives and chastises him for his failures revealing he was nothing more than a pawn. Edward then personally awakens Zapdos and returns to the Oblivia Ruins. When the Player and Summer arrive at the farthest room, they find Edward and the rest of the Societea having a tea party. At first the group pretends to be simply having a tea party, but Arley cannot bring himself to keep up the act. Then, Edward reveals the Societea and explains its past. The group was made up of highly skilled treasure hunters that could acquire any treasure they sought, but it was forced to disband when its members got too old. He then reveals the Societea has found the Golden Armor that grants eternal life and activates the Sky Fortress. In a demonstration of power, he has the fortress's main cannon destroy Dolce Island, fortunately the Pokémon living on it are evacuated safely. He also has the controlled legendary birds erect a barrier around the fortress. When the Ranger infiltrate the Sky Fortress, they confront and defeat the members of the Societea until only Ed is left. Ed reveals he has the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo at his disposal and attacks the Player with it. After the Player captures Mewtwo, Ed decides to use the Fortress's cannon to destroy Renbow Island, but Rand arrives and reveals he used one of Nema's inventions to disable the weapon. Growing desperate, Ed tries to gather the remaining pieces of the Golden Armor he split up among the Societea members, but Purple Eyes appears and reveals he has already taken the other armor pieces. Purple Eyes steals Ed's piece of armor and uses the complete set to further empower Mewtwo. He then has Mewtwo attack Ed causes him and Rand to disappear when the latter tries to save the former. After Mewtwo is captured and the Sky Fortress is prevented from crashing into the ocean, Rand is released from wherever Mewtwo sent him and reveals that Ed was banished to some far away place and is stripped of any reason to return to Oblivia.
