Aiding the Enemy! (Japanese: ナエトル、ハヤシガメ…そしてドダイトス!, HepburnTurtwig, Grotle… and Torterra!) is the 48th episode of Pokémon: DP Battle Dimension.

Synopsis[]

Ash and his friends run into a Pokémon Center to watch a big battle on the TV: Champion Cynthia defeating Elite Four Aaron! Paul is at the Pokémon Center too, and all he wants to know is whether Ash is using Chimchar's Blaze ability. While Ash has his Pokémon train against each other to prepare for the Hearthome Gym Battle, Paul quietly watches from the sidelines. Brock notices Paul and tries to talk about Paul's brother Reggie, but Paul doesn't want to hear about Reggie; he's angry that Reggie stopped battling after losing his final Battle Frontier challenge.

During a break in Ash's training, Paul comes over and gets on Ash's nerves again. Even worse, Paul taunts Ash with the badge he already won at the Hearthome Gym! As usual, the two Trainers get into an argument, and Ash wants another battle. It'll be a one-on-one, Turtwig against Paul's Honchkrow, with Paul's other Pokémon watching the match. Turtwig's speed helps it dodge Honchkrow's attacks, but Turtwig is still taking a lot of hits. Just when things are looking grim, Turtwig evolves into Grotle. However, Grotle is much bigger, and it can no longer dodge as quickly as Turtwig—so it's an easy win for Honchkrow. Strangely, even after the battle, Paul's Torterra seems preoccupied by Grotle's defeat.

That night, Grotle sneaks out of the Center to train alone. It wants to get its old speed back, but its body just can't run as quickly as it did before. Ash's Pokémon come out to watch, and Paul's Torterra emerges from the bushes as well. With Gliscor's help, Torterra demonstrates how to endure attacks without dodging, then strike at just the right moment. Grotle understands that Torterra is telling it to develop a different fighting style that suits its new form. The next morning, Ash tries to thank Paul for Torterra's help, but Paul brushes him off—what Torterra does is its own business! Paul may never change, but Ash is ready to switch things up and win his next Gym battle. Now it's back to Hearthome for him and his friends![1]

Episode plot[]

Ash and the gang make it to a pokemon center where they gather around watching Aaron's battle against Cynthia. Among the trainers in the crowd is Paul. They watch on as Aaron's Beautifly fires one final attack, hedging all of their hope on it. Cynthia's Gastrodon uses Stone Edge though to defend itself and retaliate. This knocks out Aaron's final pokemon, and sealing the victory for Cynthia. After this, Team Rocket begins to groom Pauls Torterra as Ash trains with Dawn. Paul's Happiny catches Brock's eye, and he compliments it's training. He also makes mention of Paul's interest in Ash's training of Chimchar. Paul however notes he is disappointed that Ash does not use Blaze. Brock mentions that it's not in his style. He then moves on to talking about Pauls brother, Reggie. Paul shows contempt for Reggie due to viewing him as a quitter after giving up training due to his losses at the Battle Pyramid in the Kanto Frontier. As Ash stops for the moment to regroup, Paul approaches him and proceeds to flaunt his relic badge in Ash's face. He further rubs it in by telling Ash that his best chance is to push through with brute force. Ash demands a match with Paul, which Paul accepts. Ash uses his Turtwig as Paul utilizes Honchkrow. Turtwig's superior speed gives it the edge despite a bad type match-up. However, Ash's Turtwig evolves into a Grotle. However, Ash doesn't realize that it's weight increased and isn't as agile as it used to be, and continues his speed based strategy, which leads to his loss. Grotle is in the pokemon center being treated after this where it feels depressed for it's failure. Ash praises the defense increase and promises to help it train with speed. That night, unable to sleep, Grotle goes out to train its speed as the pokemon, and later the Trainers, follow after. Grotle attempts to increase its speed through training, but keeps failing. It is then that Paul's Torterra appears and has a mock-battle with Gliscor where it displays that speed isn't their forte, but defense instead. Grotle understands. Ash rushes out to thank Torterra and then promises to help Grotle increase its defense. The next day, Ash thanks Paul, but Paul claims to have had nothing to do with it and moves on. Ash then vows to Chimchar and Grotle that the next time they meet Paul in battle, they will win.

Trivia[]

  • "Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture:" Muk
  • Because the Sky is There, Pokémon Symphonic Medley and music from The Rise of Darkrai are used as background music.
  • Out of Ash and Paul's six rival battles, this is the only time when Chimchar is not used in the match.
  • Team Rocket doesn't blast off or recite their motto in this episode.
  • This marks the last appearance of Paul's Gliscor.

Mistakes[]

  • In the English dub, Jessie incorrectly calls Paul's Torterra a Grotle.
  • Turtwig "starts" to evolve twice during this episode. The first time, it glows and the sound of evolution is played, and right after the scene changes and goes back to Turtwig, it starts evolving again.
