The Keystone Pops! (Japanese: ミカルゲの要石!, HepburnSpiritomb's Keystone!) is the 4th episode of Pokémon: DP Battle Dimension.

Synopsis[]

Aipom and Buizel are battling in a field when Aipom deflects Buizel's Sonic Boom into an old stone tower, knocking it down. Then the skies darken and a Pokémon emerges from the ruined tower: Spiritomb! Spiritomb flies off, causing havoc wherever it goes—first it wrecks Team Rocket's dinner, then it wrecks an entire village!

One of the villagers is an old lady who knows this damage is the work of Spiritomb. Long, long ago, Spiritomb caused trouble for the villagers until an Aura Guardian and his Pikachu sealed Spiritomb inside a Hallowed Tower made of stone. That sounds an awful lot like the tower our heroes accidentally knocked down! Ash and his friends promise to make things right, they're approached by Team Rocket, who are disguised as psychics. They pretend to help calm Spiritomb down, but then spring a net over Pikachu and Spiritomb.

Spiritomb blasts the net apart and chases down Team Rocket. But Meowth discovers that Spiritomb is really looking for revenge on the Aura Guardian who sealed it in the Tower. Meanwhile, our heroes need to stop Spiritomb, so they lure Team Rocket into a trap and Spiritomb is close behind. But when Team Rocket tells Spiritomb that Ash is a descendant of the Aura Guardian, it turns its wrath on Ash!

With Spiritomb in hot pursuit, Ash runs to the ruins of the Hallowed Tower, yet Spiritomb is too powerful to be sealed away. Pikachu is exhausted, but as clouds gather overhead, Ash gets an idea. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt on the skies, attracting a lightning bolt that fills it with energy. Then Pikachu defeats Spiritomb and the wayward spirit is sealed back into the Hallowed Tower, this time for good![1]

Episode plot[]

Dawn and Ash train their newly traded Pokémon. Aipom uses Swift, but misses. Buizel uses Water Gun, but Aipom evades. Buizel uses Aqua Jet, but does not know which Aipom to hit, as she used Double Team. Aipom uses Focus Punch, but Buizel counters it. Aipom uses Swift, collecting the stars in a bigger one, but Buizel crashes it with Aqua Jet. Aipom sends Buizel's Sonic Boom back with Focus Punch, though it hits a statue. The bricks of the statue glow and there is an uneasy wind in the air, as clouds gather. The clouds cover the sky and a thunder strikes the spot and a stone glows, awakening something, a Pokémon named Spiritomb.

Spiritomb attacks them with Shadow Ball, but the heroes go away. It attacks with Hyper Beam, but misses. Buizel uses Water Gun, but the attack goes through Spiritomb and does not hurt it. Buizel got hit by Spiritomb and Spiritomb departs. Team Rocket is ready to eat, but notice a Pokémon coming. The Spiritomb attacks them and ruins the dinner, then departs, hitting Jessie in her head. Jessie is very angry for such treatment and promises to get it. Next day, the heroes wander to a village and witness it was attacked. They are being told a Pokémon attacked them and a woman, although nervous, knows it was Spiritomb. The woman tells a legend that the Spiritomb was causing trouble and made the people's lives worse, so it was sealed away in a statue. Luckily, a hero came with a Pikachu and defeated Spiritomb and sealed it away in a keystone. The hero wandered off, leaving the village to thrive back.

Hearing the story, the heroes know they crushed the statue. The woman knows they crushed the statue. The heroes deeply apologize for bringing the statue down and promise to seal the Spiritomb back. Team Rocket comes, dressed as psychics. Jessie predicts that Ash's guide is a man with a red shirt, a lab coat and writes poems, which is referring to Prof. Oak. Jessie tells Dawn she was a Slowpoke in her past life, making her miserable. Jessie goes to foretell Brock, but sees the old woman and Team Rocket is scared by her presence. Still, they do make everyone know Jessie can talk to Pokémon, but it is a plan to get Pikachu and Spiritomb. Suddenly, a man comes to report Spiritomb attacks the village. Jessie sends her Sneasel (aka Meowth) to use Telepathy (which is just talking) on Spiritomb.

Meowth comes back and whispers to James something, then James tells Spiritomb wants Pikachu. Jessie waves to get rid of Spiritomb, but it is a trap - Pikachu and Spiritomb are captured. Team Rocket gets in the balloon and removes their disguises. Team Rocket departs and the heroes go to get them, while the woman thinks they must be dumb they thought they caught Spiritomb. Spiritomb attacks the balloon and cuts it. Pikachu and Spiritomb are free, so Jessie sends Seviper to take care of Spiritomb, but gets attacked by Hyper Beam. Team Rocket runs away, while the Spiritomb chases them. Later, Team Rocket is exhausted and give up. Meowth translates Spiritomb wants revenge on the one who sealed it, but Team Rocket fools Spiritomb and run again.

Staravia searches, but cannot find Spiritomb. Dawn has an idea; they could lure Spiritomb, as it chases Team Rocket, so a trap could imprison it. Team Rocket is exhausted, but find Pikachu sleeping. They go to get him, but fall in a hole. To annoy them, the heroes chant, but this angers Jessie a lot. Team Rocket has an idea - they tell the twerp with Pikachu is the descendant of the one who imprisoned it. It works - Spiritomb attacks Ash with Hyper Beam. Heeding the woman's words, Ash heads to the site where it was imprisoned and battle it there. Pikachu uses Quick Attack to taunt Spiritomb, then electrocute it with Thunderbolt. Spiritomb retaliates with Hyper Beam. Team Rocket watches and will grab what is left of the battle.

Spiritomb still chases them, so Pikachu attacks with Thunderbolt. Pikachu attacks it again, but he is beginning to be exhausted. Team Rocket is glad to see him exhausted, but Ash and Pikachu evade Shadow Ball, which hits Team Rocket instead and blasts them off. Spiritomb prepares for Giga Impact and hits Pikachu and Ash. The clouds gather again, so Pikachu aims for the clouds with Thunderbolt. The attack comes back at him, but instead powers him up. Pikachu charges with Volt Tackle, ignoring Spiritomb's attack and sends it back to its stone using Thunderbolt. Brock grabs the stone and they all go to the site. They rebuild the statue and it glows, locking Spiritomb from any trouble. The woman tells a new legend is born, as the hero and his Pikachu defeated the Spiritomb once more, though Ash prefers the term Pokémon Master. As Dawn's stomach rumbles, the heroes go eat at the woman's house.

Trivia[]

  • Professor Oak's Lecture: Mismagius
    • Pokémon Senryū: ムウマージ じゅもんとなえて やみにきえ Muumāji, jumon to naete, yami ni kie
  • Team Rocket's final pose for their motto in this episode refers to a Hindi/Chinese myth of world creation: the world is held by four elephants (Phanpy), which stand on a turtle (Torkoal), which stands on a snake that bites its own tail (Arbok).
    • Each of these Pokémon were on a main character's team at some point in the anime. Arbok belonged to Jessie, while Phanpy and Torkoal belong to Ash.
  • This is the first episode of the anime to mention Aura (and Ash's proficiency in it), which was a major plot point in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. As a result, the movie is made canon by this episode.
  • Buizel and Aipom switched places in Ash's and Dawn's teams in the opening and ending, respectively, corresponding with their trade in the previous episode.
  • Music from Lucario and the Mystery of Mew was used as background music during the old woman's story and the ending scene.
  • This is the first Pokémon USA/DuArt Film & Video episode to feature Dan Green (appearing in this episode as the voice of Spiritomb), who had previously worked on the 4Kids dub.
  • The episode was originally scheduled to premiere in the United States on May 3, 2008, but was pulled due to unknown reasons. As a result, some fans were initially led to believe this episode was being skipped in the dub.
  • The title for this episode comes from the movie series The Keystone Kops.
  • This episode marks the only time Dawn is seen using Aipom between the last episode (in which she was traded) and "Journey to the Unown!" (in which she evolves into Ambipom).
  • This is one of the few episodes of Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl in which Dawn's Piplup does not appear.
  • Jessie calls Spiritomb "Iron Chef", referring to the Japanese TV show of the same name.
  • In this episode, Team Rocket uses a variation of their motto.

Dub errors[]

  • In the English dubbing, when Ash says that he isn't an Aura Guardian, he talks over his mouth.
