Counter Sheild was a tatic invented by Ash for his gym battle with Fantina in order to avoid all of her Pokemon's Hypnosis. Counter Sheild is used by spinning while using a Special catagory move like flamethrower or watergun. After being defeated by Fantina's Drifloon after it evolved into Drifblim during an outside of gym battle with Ash, and Pikachu being hypnotised, Ash trained Buizel, Pikechu and Chimchar to use the move. Fantina later used Counter Sheild herself during their gym battle with Drifblim and the moves Will-O-Wisp and Psychic. Fantina also named Counter Sheild after her Gengar was defeated by Pikachu's ThunderBolt Counter Sheild. Counter Sheild was used most by Chimchar who used it three times during the gym battle, first with just flamethrower, then with Flamewheel as well and third with flamethrower meeting Drifblim's Will-O-Wisp and turning a dark purple in color from the blue ghostly flame of Will-O-Wisp and the red flames form Chimchar, it most likely became more powerful and increased in the chance of inflicting a burn sense Will-O-Wisp only causes a burn as well as damage. It was only seen in this epicode ontill Dawn's Piplup used it against Cilan with Bubblebeam against his Crustle's Rock Slide and when Paul's East Sea Gastrodon used Counter Sheild with Muddy Water, but it is most likely he didn't know the technique had a name and was invented by Ash. Ash got the idea for Counter Sheild from memories of Dawn and May's Contests. Fantina was the person that named Counter Sheild. Fantina was also the second person to use Counter Sheild, Dawn was the thrid or the first sense Ash got the idea from her and May's Contests. Dawn's Ambipalm had a habit of using Swift while spinning causing a Normal type Counter Sheild and the stars to colide and causing rainbows to fall. Ambipalm often did this for the Proformance round of contests. It was also one of the reasons Dawn didn't make it past the first round in one contest because Ambipalm was completly surounded by stars and was hidden, later Zoey pointed out that that was why Dawn didn't make it past.

Weaknesses & ProblemsEdit

Counter Sheild is a powerful offencive move as well as being a strong defencive move, but it has weaknesses.

• Type: when using a Water Counter Sheild, if a eletric type move was used, the eletricity would move up the water and hit the user.
• Type: A Water type could break through a Fire type Counter Sheild
• the user cann't dodge while using Counter Sheild.
• Rival: if the trapped pokemon is a ghost type and knows teleport and could escape
• few grass type moves could be used
• the type of Pokemon the user is produces varing strengths and problems for the sheild
  • Fantina's Drfiblim used Counter Sheild with Will-O-Wisp and Psychic but the sheild was small and only defencive to Drifblim. it didn't do damage untill Fantina had Drifblim throw it and trap Chimchar within the bright blue flaming ring, trapping Chimchar.
• Stone Edge: though it has an apperance of Counter Sheild; it is not but could be used if the stones or not thrown or if caught by the other Pokemon and Psychic is used.
• Psychic: if the move is a set length Special type move such as Hidden Power or Secret Power; Psychic has to be used.
• Self Traping: if the user spun to fast the move would be closer to the user and trap itself and cause damage to itself
• Psychic: if the rival uses Psychic, it could steal the move used and use the snatched move to use Counter Sheidl itself.

ApperanceEdit

Counter Sheild's apperance depends on the used move. Move's like Flamethrower and Thunderbolt will produce will whips of lightning or flames that strike the wall, ceiling and floor as well as trapping the rival Pokemon. Move's like Watergun produce the same effect but cause less damage to the trapped Pokemon. While move like Bubble beam produce an almost sphere of the move pushing the rival Pokemon's move away from the user. 

The mose unique Counter Sheild belong to Fantina's Drifblim because the glowing blue ring of Will-O-Wisp and Psychic were perfectly rounded and in absolute control and also didn't cause damage to Ash's Pokemon. also because Drifblim rose the sheild off itself and threw it trapping Ash's Chimchar in a cage of blue flame.

Ash's Chimchar has used Counter Sheild three times each with a unique apperance:

• first was a normal Couner Sheild with Flamethrower
• then the second time Ash had Chimchar use Flamethrower while used Flamewheel causing a ring of fire with flaming whips coming from it. the whips blocked damage while striking the rival Pokemon with Flamewheel.
• Third was against Drifblim and was a pure offencive Counter Sheild as Chimchar's Flamethrower meet Will-O-Wisp and turned a dark purple in color.

Psychic will have to be one of the moves if the other is not of the Special type. Also Stone Edge isn't a Rock Type Counter Sheild though it dose look like it. If the feild is destroyed slightly and rocks where around, Psychic could be used for a Rock Type Counter Sheild. Steel type moves are unlikely to be used besides Flash Cannon.

• Counter Sheild is Ash's second self invented tatic, the first being Thunderarmor with Pikachu using Thunderbolt on itself 
• Fantina is the only person to use Counter Sheild with a Ghost Type, her Drifblim used Will-O-Wisp and Psychic.
• She is also the first to use it without any special training, sense it is unknown is Dawn did any special training because Counter Sheild was based off her and May's Contests.
• Dawn, Fantina and Brock were the first people to see Counter Sheild used
  • Iris, Cilan, Cynthia, Axew, Osawatt, Crustle, and Meloetta were the next ones because of Dawn using it against Cilian's Crustle.
  • This was also the first time Ash saw Counter Sheild used by someone else besides Fantina
  • this was also the first time Counter Sheild was refrenced after the epicode, "Sheild with a twist". it was also the first time it was used with Bubble beam.
• Counter Sheild is both Defensive and Offencive
• The only Pokemon types seen using Counter Sheild are Water, Fire, Eletric, and Ghost and Normal.
  • the normal type Counter Sheild was used by Dawn's Ambipalm using Swift but was during contests before the gym battle
• It is highly unlikely a Grass Type could use Counter Sheild because the only move that could be used for it is Vine whip
• Ice beam would produce the same apperance as a Thunder Counter Sheild, but cause ice to form everywhere and would be blue in color
• Dawn is the second person to use Counter Sheild sense Ash's gym battle with Fantina; first was Paul with his east sea Gastrodon with Muddly water. Paul didn't know he was using Counter Sheild too.
• Ash got the idea for Counter Sheild from watching Dawn and May's Pokemon Contests
• Fantina named Counter Sheild after Pikachu used it to deflect her Gengar's hypnosis
•  Stone Edge isn't a Rock type Counter Sheild but could be used as such

• Turiwg is the only Generation Four starter that hasn't been seen using Counter Sheild
  • Ash's Chimchar was seen using it three times during the Gym Battle with Fantina
  • Dawn's Piplup was seen using it against Cilan in Pokemon Black and White Rival Destonies
• Solorbeam and Hyperbeam couldn't be used for a Counter Sheild because of their over 100 power and they can't be used while moving
• Vine Whip is the only move that is a Grass Type that could be used for a Counter Sheild but it is highly unlikely because the vines would tangle
• Magical Leaf, Razor Leaf, Leaf Storm and Leaf tornador used with Psychic could be used in a Counter Sheild that is close to a grass type but it would be dual types because of Psychic.
  • This could also only be used in a Double Battle because there is no Pokemon that can learn both Psychic or one of the priors.
• The animation for Ash's Pignite's Flame Charge is simalar to the look of a Counter Sheild.
• Before Dawn and Paul used Counter Sheild, it only appeared in one epicode
  • Thunder Armor has also only been seen once as well before Dawn's and Paul's using Counter sheild making Counter Sheild appear in three epicodes.
• Counter Sheild isn't the first tatic Ash invented based on a Contest move.
  • Ash thought of Counter Sheild from memories of Dawn and May's Contests.
• Swift is the only Normal type move that could be used as a Counter Sheild.
• if Psychic is used almost any move could be used in a Counter Sheild.

• When Ash had Chimchar use Flamethrower while using Flamewheel, Brock said Chimchar could do that because of the stamina and athletacisum Chimchar prosesed.
• Chimchar is the only one of Ash's Pokemon that has had Counter Sheild used against it.
• Ash has invented three tatics: Thunder Armor, Counter Sheild and Ice Aqua Jet.
  • Ice Aqua Jet and Thunder Armor have only been seen in one epicode. Counter Sheild has been seen in two, and used by three people. Ice Aqua jet has been used by two people, Dawn and Ash. Dawn wanted to use a frozen Aqua jet in a contest but gave up on it. so it has only been seen to work in one epicode, but failed everytime in the first.
    • Ash figured out how to use it by having Buizel spin. Dawn didn't have Buizel spin thus couldn't maintain momentum to contue moving forward and would crash into the ground.
    • Dawn had Buneary use Ice beam on Buizel while he used Aqua Jet but not spinning causing Buizel to crash. Ash had Buizel spin into an oncoming Ice beam while compeating in the Wallace Cup, Buizel was able to continue forward causing massice damage before being defeated because the oposing Pokemon was also an eletric type and super effective against Buizel.

• Ironicly, Counter Sheild was invented based on Contests and Ice Aqua Jet was as well by Dawn but she gave up on it before Ash was able to use it while he was competing in the Wallce Cup.
  • Ice Aqua Jet has only been used by Buizel, he also used Counter Sheild. and Ice Aqua Jet has only been seen  in one epicode were Counter Sheild has been seen in three.
    • the Wallace Cup was the second Contest Ash competed in, it was the first he was seen wearing a special outfit for a contest as he was wearing a tuzedo with white gloves and a bowler hat.
    • When Ash was in the Proformance stage with Buizel, Paul was walking past a Eletronic store and saw Ash on a display t..v competing, Paul walking on after saying, "what is that idiot doing", so Paul probably dosen't care for contests also so that the Wallace Cup was televised and Ash's family, friends and other rivals may have seen him competing.
      • Ash won the first he was in but tied with May for first and lost in the top eight of the Wallace
        • May and Ash carry halves of the Ribbon from the Contest they where both in. it is a rainbow with pink ribbon and was from Terricotta town. they carry the havles because the tied from first in the contest.
          • Ash competed in the Wallace Cup because Contest Master and the Champion, Wallace, asked him to.
