Chespin seems to resemble a porcupine or hedgehog. It has a tough spiky green chestnut-like shell covering its head and back. Chespin has brown fur, a large pink triangle-shaped nose, black oval-shaped eyes, and a toothy grin. It has sharp claws on its large feet, and a pink tip on the end of its pointed green tail.
Despite having a curious nature that tends to get it in trouble, Chespin keeps an optimistic outlook and doesn't worry about small details.

|The quills on its head are usually soft. When it flexes them, the points become so hard and sharp that they can pierce rock.|
|Such a thick shell of wood covers its head and back that even a direct hit from a truck wouldn't faze it.|

- Chespin bears a resemblance to the Generation V starter Oshawott.
- Chespin's Evolution line is based off the warrior class in various RPG games.
- Chespin is the first and so far only Grass-type starter Pokémon to not have been captured by Ash.
