Known as the Seed Pokémon, Bulbasaur resembles a small, squatting dinosaur that walks on four legs and has a large plant bulb on its back that is able to shoot seeds out of. It also has large red eyes and has very sharp teeth. Its skin is a light turquoise color with dark green spots. It has three nails on all its four legs. Its most notable feature, however, is the aforementioned bulb on its back, which as the Pokédex states, was planted on it at birth.

Bulbasaur resembles a small amphibian/frog, but it bears three claws on each of its feet and has no tail. It also has large, red eyes and small, sharp teeth. Its skin is a light, turquoise color with dark, green spots. It has three claws on all four of its legs. Its most notable feature, however, is the aforementioned bulb on its back, which according to its entry in the Pokédex, was planted there at birth. It also seems that it uses vines that grow out of its back as weapons, they are easily extractable.

Habitat
+
Behavior
  +
A Bulbasaur often rests in bright places so its bulb can absorb sunlight. It can be seen napping in bright sunlight. While it sleeps, the seed on its back catches the rays and uses the energy to grow. In the wild, Bulbasaur tend to be very rare, as they are shy creatures that prefer the company of their own kind. However, they are also generally very docile, tame, and loyal to people that they trust, and for that reason are one of the species of Pokémon available for starting trainers to choose in the region of Kanto.
As Bulbasaur is a starter Pokémon, it is hard to locate, however, it could be found near streams.

Special abilities
+
Natural abilities
Bulbasaurs have "bulbs" on their backs that grow steadily larger as the Bulbasaur matures. This bulb contains a seed which uses photosynthesis to supply Bulbasaur with energy. Its bulb is also used to store the energy which the seed absorbs, which can be used when it is necessary. It is assumed that when a Bulbasaur collects enough energy in its bulb, it will evolve into an Ivysaur.

Its bulb is also used to store the energy that the seed absorbs, which can be used when it is necessary. It is assumed that when a Bulbasaur collects enough energy and sunlight in its bulb, it will evolve into an Ivysaur.

  +
The plants are able to become mobile by virtue of their active hosts, allowing them to move out of shaded areas and thus benefiting them as well.

Ash's Bulbasaur is exceptionally the strongest Grass-type starter Pokémon and becomes a peacemaker of both Grass and Water-type Pokémon in Professor Oak's lab. It strikes up its friendship with May's Bulbasaur when they are searching for the missing Poké Balls, and it was also the one who teaches May's as they stay in the lab until it evolves twice in its evolutionary stages. In the XY series, It was later followed by Shauna's Bulbasaur, and like May's Bulbasaur was used for the Pokémon Contests, Shauna's Bulbasaur was used for the Pokémon Showcase until it evolves into Ivysaur.
Origins
Bulbasaur's appearance is based upon a small dinosaur with a plant growing off its back.

Supporting
  +
*Nurse Joy's Bulbasaur
* Bulbasaur uses the bulb on its back to store extra energy. This makes it possible for Bulbasaur to survive for days without eating.

Trivia
  +
*Bulbasaur has two main distinctions:
  +
**Bulbasaur is known to be the first Pokémon introduced in the National Pokédex Order that is a genuine Pokémon.
  +
**Bulbasaur and its evolutions are the only Poison-type starter Pokémon and it was the only basic stage starter to be dual-typed until Rowlet was introduced in Generation VII, with Grass/flying. All other basic stage starters are single typed (although some become dual-typed after evolution).
  +
*Bulbasaur and its evolutions have the same species as Sunkern: they are all classified as Seed Pokémon.
  +
*Bulbasaur's shiny was originally an olive green color with a darker bulb color. In Generation VI, its olive green coloring was toned down to more of a light green.
  +
*A Bulbasaur with an English name couldn't be traded on the GTS without a nickname in Pokémon Black and White because of censorship.
  +
*If a hack is used where a Pokémon can be transferred from Generation VII to Pokémon XY or Pokémon ORAS, that Pokémon will turn into a Bulbasaur with a random Pokémon's cry.
  +
*According to Ken Sugimori and Atsuko Nishida, Venusaur was designed before Bulbasaur, and the latter was designed based on the former.
  +
  +
Origin
Bulbasaur (Japanese: フシギダネ, HepburnFushigidane) (BUL-ba-sore[1]) is a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is one of the three First partner Pokémon that can be chosen in the Kanto region.

Biology

Physiology

Bulbasaur resembles a small amphibian/frog, but it bears three claws on each of its feet and has no tail. It also has large, red eyes and small, sharp teeth. Its skin is a light, turquoise color with dark, green spots. It has three claws on all four of its legs. Its most notable feature, however, is the aforementioned bulb on its back, which according to its entry in the Pokédex, was planted there at birth. It also seems that it uses vines that grow out of its back as weapons, they are easily extractable.

Behavior

A Bulbasaur often rests in bright places so its bulb can absorb sunlight. It can be seen napping in bright sunlight. While it sleeps, the seed on its back catches the rays and uses the energy to grow. In the wild, Bulbasaur tend to be very rare, as they are shy creatures that prefer the company of their own kind. However, they are also generally very docile, tame, and loyal to people that they trust, and for that reason are one of the species of Pokémon available for starting trainers to choose in the region of Kanto.

Natural abilities

Each Bulbasaur has a "bulb" on its back that grows steadily larger as it matures. This bulb contains a seed which uses photosynthesis to supply Bulbasaur with energy. Its bulb is also used to store the energy that the seed absorbs, which can be used when it is necessary. It is assumed that when a Bulbasaur collects enough energy and sunlight in its bulb, it will evolve into an Ivysaur.

The plants are able to become mobile by virtue of their active hosts, allowing them to move out of shaded areas and thus benefiting them as well.

Evolution

Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur starting at level 16, and into Venusaur at level 32.

Pokédex entries

  • Red and Blue

A strange seed was planted on its back at birth. The plant sprouts and grows with this Pokémon.

  • Yellow

It can go for days without eating a single morsel. In the bulb on its back, it stores energy.

  • Gold

The seed on its back is filled with nutrients. The seed grows steadily larger as its body grows.

  • Silver

It carries a seed on its back right from birth. As it grows older, the seed also grows larger.

  • Crystal

Appearances

Anime

Trivia

  • Bulbasaur has two main distinctions:
    • Bulbasaur is known to be the first Pokémon introduced in the National Pokédex Order that is a genuine Pokémon.
    • Bulbasaur and its evolutions are the only Poison-type starter Pokémon and it was the only basic stage starter to be dual-typed until Rowlet was introduced in Generation VII, with Grass/flying. All other basic stage starters are single typed (although some become dual-typed after evolution).
  • Bulbasaur and its evolutions have the same species as Sunkern: they are all classified as Seed Pokémon.
  • Bulbasaur's shiny was originally an olive green color with a darker bulb color. In Generation VI, its olive green coloring was toned down to more of a light green.
  • A Bulbasaur with an English name couldn't be traded on the GTS without a nickname in Pokémon Black and White because of censorship.
  • If a hack is used where a Pokémon can be transferred from Generation VII to Pokémon XY or Pokémon ORAS, that Pokémon will turn into a Bulbasaur with a random Pokémon's cry.
  • According to Ken Sugimori and Atsuko Nishida, Venusaur was designed before Bulbasaur, and the latter was designed based on the former.

Origin

Bulbasaur is based on a frog.[2][3] More specifically, the Beelzebufo, a large prehistoric frog.

Etymology

  • "Bulbasaur" comes from "bulb" and "dinosaur".
  • Fushigidane is a combination of 不思議(ふしぎ) fushigi (strange) and (たね) tane (seed). It's also a pun on the phrase 不思議(ふしぎ)だね (fushigi da ne, "isn't it strange?").

Names in other languages

  • Korean: 이상해씨 (Isanghessi in Romaja) from the Korean words Isanghada (이상하다), which means strange and ssi (씨), which means seed.
  • French: Bulbizarre from the French words bulbe (bulb) and bizarre (bizarre).
  • German: Bisasam from the German words Bisamratte (muskrat) and Samen (seed).
  • Swedish: Grudda
