Hariyama first appeared in Brave the Wave as a Makuhita. Like Brawly and Machop, Makuhita also enjoys surfing the waves and uses the surfing techniques it learned from Brawly in its battles. It was used against Ash's Treecko in a Gym battle. With its impressive power and skill, Makuhita was easily able to gain the upper hand. However, when Treecko kept coming back for more, Makuhita evolved into Hariyama. With the massive power boost it gained by evolving, Hariyama finished Treecko off easily with Knock Off, thus defeating Ash. However due to its greater size and weight, Hariyama found surfing more difficult.
