This Hariyama is a fighting-type Pokémon owned by Brawly.

As Makuhita

Brawly was riding the waves with Makuhita, to train jū, a martial art. They stopped after seeing Sapphire, who apologized for having her Wailord slam the water, which created that wave.[1]

During the Gym Battle, Sapphire sent Lairon, Rono, against Makuhita. Rono used Metal Claw and Iron Tail, but Makuhita was unharmed and threw Rono away. Instead, Sapphire swapped Lairon for her Combusken, Chic. Chic fired Flamethrower at Makuhita, who took less damage, due to its Thick Fat ability, then threw Chic at the wall. Sapphire realized Makuhita was storing energy to evolve. Brawly commended her, as his Makuhita evolved into a Hariyama.[2]

As Hariyama

After evolving, Hariyama proceeded to attack Chic.[2] Despite her hand getting stuck in the wall of the Gym, Chic kicked Hariyama, who reflected the damage with Counter. However, Chic managed to use Double Kick and defeated Hariyama, who only reflected the damage from one kick. Brawly was astounded Sapphire defeated his Hariyama and gave her the Knuckle Badge.[3]

The Gym Leaders and their Pokémon were recalled, including Brawly's Hariyama, for they had to fight Team Aqua and Team Magma's admins.[4] In the fight against Groudon, Brawly's Machoke got paralyzed by Groudon's Thunder. To cure that, Brawly's Hariyama used Smelling Salts, which cured the paralysis.[5] Brawly faced Blaise and had his Hariyama use Fake Out on his Slugma. To dispel the illusions, Brawly's Hariyama used Knock Off.[6] The attack blew Slugma away and surprised Roxanne, who faced Courtney.[7] Hariyama continued using Knock Off, which made Slugma drop two hairpins, which were belonging to Tate and Liza. Brawly tired to question Blaise, who retreated, leaving Brawly lying on the floor, exhausted.[8]

Brawly's Hariyama was used to launch an attack against the meteorite.[9]
